Chief Justice William Rehnquist dead

Beat me. I just got a popup about this on MSN.

"William Rehnquist, the chief justice of the United States, is dead."

I like the fact that within 15 minutes of his death, they have people on saying that, because the court is down 2 members now, its vitally important for the country to 'put politics aside' and fill them ASAP. In other words, simply rubber-stamp any nutjob that Bush feels like appointing. As though THEY (the Republicans) would for an instant consider putting politics aside if positions are reversed. As if they're not playing politics right now by saying politics should be put aside.

Hell, I bet Bush is dancing in the White House right now: not only does he get another chance to prop up his bloated-corpse of a 'legacy', but Rehnquist's death has pushed Katrina off the news, for the time being.

Kind of like they wanted with John Bolton, the worst ambassador ever? I hope not.

If bush pushs through quickly (which is more likely considering he already had to look for someone with robertson, so he's likely to have a name he would quickly pick), democrats need to do whatever they can to stall, while simultaneously being quiet about it, until people start taking focus off katrina. It would look horrible to see democrats squabbling in washington while people are suffering in shelters and a city was just destroyed.

But really, if the Dems don't stand up against this bullshit, then I really wouldn't know what to say. Why doesn't somebody just say "If anything, these 2 open seats are more reason than ever to take our time and ACCURATELY fill them, instead of rushing TWO people into them."? Really, if we just lay down and let them roll over us, we're just as much to blame.

I hope they don't wuss out.

People keep saying "wave goodbye to your civil liberties" and "the shit's about to hit the fan" and I don't understand. What do they mean by it all?

I also keep hearing people complaining as if it's the end of the world. What exactly does Rehnquist dying have to do with the hurricane? There are a lot of people out there convinced that the two events are connected or something. Crazy...

In modern times, half of the country believes that this land should be governed by the laws written in the sprit of the US constitution, the other half would rather have US governed by the laws of the christian bible.

Here are a few of the things that frighten the fans of freedom: abortion is outlawed everywhere in America without exception, christian prayer ritual is sponsored by the public school system, "faith-based" (codeword for christian) organizations run most of the federally funded nonprofit programs, public school science is replaced by mythology, in judicial matters women are treated as home-makers instead of citizens, and homosexuals are denied basic rights and priveleges on the basis of "public decency standards"

Hrm, that pretty much sums it up. Good post. If this was slashdot, I'd mod you up +1 insightful.

And to make it closer to home - it could mean saying goodbye to the esrb and saying hello to gov't run ratings boards that would love to ban certain games.
