So I've been thinking about what Linux Distribution I want to dual boot with when I reformat tomorrow and haven't really come to a single conclusion. Therefore, I'm asking on your own opinions on which distro to use. Difficulty isn't a problem as I will be the only one using the computer. I'm more or less doing this to refamiliarize myself with the Linux OS as it's been some time since I've last seriously sat down with one.
Ones I've personally narrowed it down, but not limited to, are:
- Fedora
- Mandriva
- Kubuntu
- OpenSUSE
I plan to be using the KDE Window Manager instead of GNOME or sticking strictly with CLI. That's more or less my only requirement.
Based on those choices:
Skip Fedora unless you are going with gnome. With any linux distro you want to stick with the main distribution as that is what gets the focus of development. Fedora focused on gnome, and while the KDE version isn't bad, you're more likely to run into minor issues that could have been polished out if they paid more attention to it.
Same for Kubuntu, except for the Fedora community at least pays some attention to their KDE version. Kubuntu is a complete mess.
Only go with opensuse if you are a gambling man. I've don't a number of opensuse installs, and they either install beautifully and worked perfectly, or they are digital demon spawn. I've never seen anything in between. They also seem to take longer to adopt new version of software, which can either be considered a good or bad thing.
Mandriva is really nice. They do focus on KDE, and I've never done an install that didn't work great right off the bat. You won't get many geek points for it as it's a bit of a simpler distro, but I know I would rather spend my time working on what I want to do instead of working on trying to get the os to work.
If you're open to suggestions you might want to try Linux Mint. I haven't used the KDE version so I can't vouch for it, but if it's anything like the gnome version you will be very happy.
