Circuit City Buyout?

Wow, almost debt free. Incredible in today's climate.

Although it is likely that whoever wins the bid is likely to gut the company's assets instead of making it a stronger market competitor.

haha, that's not funny. *looks around for EA agents watching every move I make* ;)

Yeah man I was at the grocery store last night minding my business and I picked up a bag of Ruffles. The next thing I know a gentleman in a black suit with sunglasses came and asked me if I would still buy those bag of Ruffles if they were called EA Chips. I just gave him the bag and ran.

When Office Max was brought out all the hot deals were gone. Hope there will still be some good deals.

I always liked CC better than Best Buy and Good Guys (back in the days before Best Buy). They usually have the better deals so I don't understand why people don't shop there.

interesting, the same hedge fund went up against reader's digest a few years ago (as well as enron).
i dont see Highfields having any motivation for this sale except to see better performance out of the company. as bestbuy currently is the success story (from an investment perspective), i would imagine that is the practice they would wish to emulate.

I always hated CC.....I could never find anyone to help me, and no one ever would check me out. They have gotten better, but not great.

I had an ordeal with a DVD played back in the day that really pissed me off

so cc would start treating their customers like shit and hiring complete idiots to work in their stores?

hedgefunds tend to care more about return investment than customer satisfaction sadly (and in this walmart age of prices over store experience the consumer doesn't always care either)

Haha. Yea BB sucks a fat one when it comes to customer service. This one guy came into our CCity (I work there) saying

"Man you guys are great! I was just at BB and there were like 4 or 5 BB employees just standing there talking and I stood there for like 10 - 15 min waiting for one to come up to me and ask if i needed help. Well, none of them did so I came here. As soon as I walked in I was greated, and by the time I made it to the TVs, every employee I crossed said Hi and as soon I got to the TVs, someone asked if I had any questions!"

I like CC a lot better than BB. CC's sale prices are better than BB's sale prices. BB has that damn GGC...

YMMV IIRC, and it's B&M only.

If I have a choice, I buy stuff from CC and Target, better experiences, so hopefully nothing bad will come of the rumor for now.

I do not like BB much, but shop there because of the rewards program. CC is iffy. SOmetimes I have really good experiences, sometimes they extremely bad. Either way, I would liekt o see them remain strong so that other retailers stay on their toes.

This biggest problem with my local CC's is that they are all SO disorganized. Games, CD's, and DVDs are all out of order, and it honestly takes about five minutes to find a cashier, just so you can pay for your merchandise. I mean that is just ridiculous, when you don't even know where you are supposed to go to check out. From what I've heard on CAG, this isn't just a local problem either. Best Buy at least has a clear "front" to it... I never have to guess where the cashiers are at.

My quick comparison:

Sales reps: CC, hands down. Most of the BB reps I deal with are moronic tools that are lucky they can get both legs into their pants without requiring a diagram. They're also not the most friendly of people. CC reps tend to be much more friendly, clued in to their store and sales and wanting to serve the customer.

Customer service: Tends to be a toss up, though a nod goes to CC's more reasonable PM policy that doesn't require two trips to the register to get 10% at day of purchase, plus they'll PM to 10% off their own pricing. CS reps from both places tend to be about as equal. PM's are much less painful with CC than BB, without question.

Sale pricing: CC blows BB out of the water, figuring we've had multiple cheap gaming deals in the last eigh months from CC and one from BB. GGC from BB is nice, when you can find the $19.99 variety, and currently, it's even more attractive, though that can change quickly.

Merchandising and store upkeep: CC edges out BB, since they tend to be a little more clueful about when the store looks like a complete pile of crap, though organization and merchandising skills tend to be a little lacking on both sides of the equation.

Corporate office assistance: More issues for me get handled lower down the hierarchical ladder with CC than BB. Higher up, they're about equal. BB does happily bend over backwards and offer your GC's when you have them in the wrong.

Knowledge of their own policies: CC seems better on this than BB, since I tend to know policies and procedures at BB better than the average BB rep/CS rep, with it happening less with CC.

Overall, my preference is for CC over BB, without question.

CC usually has better prices when i walk in.. and the BB in Orem has a shitty check out (who wants to go around a stupid aisle just to check out... AND THERE IS ONLY ONE GUY....

Lately my Best Buy has been funneling everyone through one long-ass line, and then routing people to different registers once they get to the front. It is a pain in the ass, especially when a specific cashier tends to hook you up and you now have no control over which register you get sent to.

Best Buy's CD section is way easier to look through then CC's though... BB has inclined racks that are easy to look and flip through, CC just does it vertical "bookshelf" style (and they usually just lump together entire letters of the alphabet, instead of alphabetizing by artist). My CC wasn't always like that, it's like on one specific day in 2003 all the CC's in Long Island just went straight to hell.

This is how the BB I work at is. You might not get the cashier to hook you up, but you won't pick the line where there is a problem either. Also, you guys do realize that not all Best Buy employees are jerks, right? The one I work at has some great people and of course, some not so great people. Generalizations suck guys.

This one time at CC, I was looking at computers with a sales guy, and I farted, and he looked at me funny and walked off without saying anything. True story.

 I got it.

As for myself, I've been blessed with good encounters regardless of the store, although my best experience was at CC during the $5 July clearance when I spent about 20 minutes in an otherwise empty games department kibbutzing with the register jockey. Who then promptly went into the back room and grabbed another box of games that were supposed to go out at $5.

No Disgea or Rez, but good times nonetheless. I don't think I've ever spent time talking to anybody at BB, other than to say "Thanks, but I'm just browsing."

Amen! I rarely shop at CC because of the disorganization. I can't find anything there and the selection is pretty weak to begin with, especially on CDs and DVDs. If CC has a better price, I usually just PM at BB. Unless of course there is a huge $5 blowout, then I actually take the time and search the games. :)

Circuit city is being looked at by a private investor, they are looking to buy cc out for $17 a share. no real changes have been announced, but a lot of times after buyouts like this, and with the company wanting them to be more like BB, probably not as many great CC deals on games. currently they still have some $5 and other games on clearance announced this morning.
XIII- $7.50 all systems
Auto Modelista - $5
and a bunch more. oooh and Drake of the 99 Dragons is $5, knights of columbus that game is amazing!

I thought CC and BB were related in some way or another. I recall a friend of mine working at CC and getting his discount at BB as well for some reason, although BB employees could not get their discount at CC so it made no sense at all.

I hate my local CC. No one there ever to help you, and just as already stated it takes a while just to find someone to check you out since they dont actually have checkout lanes.

Not all BB employees are jerks, no. I'll agree there, though unfortunately, there are way too many of the asshat variety out where I'm at for my tastes.
