Classic or Not #3 - Sonic & Knuckles

pumbaa

CAGiversary!
Lock on technology that changed things up in older games. 2 playable characters. More complex level designs. Was this game good back then? Can it be considered a classic now?

Also... if you have any ideas about new "classic or not" poll... PM me with the game and the reasoning... I'll put 'em up.

Nice gimmick....more irratating than anything. Not to mention the beginning of sega thinking we actually want to play other characters than sonic.

I say classic because with Sonic 3 "locked-on" you could play the best Sonic game ever... Sonic 3 +bonus levels and an extra ending (Playing the game as Sonic of course).

No way is this a classic. I've hated every single Sonic game after 2. To me none of them captured the sense of speed or matched the ingenuity of the level designs of the first game and its sequel. Sonic 1 and 2 are definately classic in my book.

I dunno... I call a game 'classic' based on how well it sticks in my head. While I remember Sonic 1 and 2 fondly, nothing really sticks for Sonic And Knuckles, save the lock-on dealie. It's important, being the only game to have such a feature, but classic? Not sure...

You all are just trying to sound special by saying it isn't a classic or saying any game past 2 sucked. Any old game can be considered a "classic", you're answering the question of "How 1337 do you think you are? How can you use the Sonic franchise to prove it to everyone?"

Anyways the Sonic and Knuckles game is a classic. It is a good game, dcfox has probably never even played any Sonic games past 2. And even if he has, he doesn't hate it, he's just immaturely trying to state how "uber" he is by putting down a less-popular game from the series.

I will agree with the obvious - Sonic 2 was the apex of the classic Sonic games (well, actually all of them IMO) - after that the series pretty much stagnated. There were new features, yes, but nothing really that noteworthy or exciting. The popularity of the title probably has a lot to do with it being a sticking point in our memories. Sonic 3 and after are largely forgotten.

The game had its share of gimmiks, but that doesn't warrant it a title like "classic." That titles reserved for the best games of all time, like Futurama for PS2. Take a bad cartoon and turn it into a bad game, ingenious.

I bet dcfox has played the game, and I agree with him. I was disappointed with S&K. The levels weren't so good, and there weren't very many changes by playing as Kunckles over Sonic. I would disagree with him on 3 though...I liked it.

Classic. Not a very long game, but still very fun and playing as Knuckles added some new moves and challenges, as well as different paths to complete the game. I think this game still holds up well today, as I still play the old Sonics for fun once in a while, and to me that is the definition of a classic, something that can always be enjoyed. The lock on with Sonic 3 made for an even better whole game experience.

Wow its like you know me better than I know myself. And let me say your post is a model for maturity. :?

For your information I've played every Sonic game up to the first Adventures for the DC.

get Sonic Advance 2 on the GBA. The game is Sonic done right (the game is so fast it is sick)

Are you retarded? You are supposed to make yourself sound 1337 by putting down a MORE popular game from the series. At least get your poorly crafted insults right.

I think, it's a shame that S&K and Sonic 3 were two seperate games. If Sonic 3 was just one giant game, then I think people would say it was one of the best games ever. Which in truth it was, and still is. However, the fact that we had to pony up twice for something we should have gotten in one cart is what keeps this game from begin considered classic imo. however, I think S&K is a classic for sure.

Sonic The Hedgehogs a classic
Sonic 2 had a fun coop oppurtunity, and great levels
Sonic & Knuckles was the first game ive ever seen besides game genie that was a literal expansion pack

All in all there very good candidates for being a classic

Hmm, the only thing I can remember about Sonic & Knuckles, besides the "lock on technology" is how difficult the game was compared to the previous titles. The game just wasn't as fun...

The only Sonic games that can be considered classics IMO are the first two. After that it got borig for me.

S & K is not classic. I agree that it was harder than the previous games, plus I didn't like the level design. It was easy to get lost or not know where to go - more focus on exploring the levels and jumping than about racing through the game.

Sonic 1 - classic, I still can hum a couple of the songs.
Sonic 2 - more focus on speed, but you could also go through each level slowly and not get lost. Loved the co-op and the graphics were nice.
Sonic 3 - the levels were expanded and weren't as straight forward as the other games.

I can't really stand the visuals and multiple characters in the gba versions. Is it me or the sprite animation sucks? When you run it looks good but if take small steps, the animation is choppy and seems like it's missing a couple of frames.

I'd consider it a classic. It's better than half of the games Sega has released in Smash packs or AGES collections.

Sonic CD, now there's a classic!

back then, to me , every game was a classic, and my mom wouldnt get me another one until i finished it. did yall get all the emeralds AND ultra emeralds(whatever they were called) with sonic 3 , and with sonic 1 lock-in i thought it going to finish, made it to about level 200 then quit

definately a classic, it recieved very high marks, it was much better than sonic 3, and it just happened to be toward the end of the genisis, thus it didn't get noticed. it is just like super mario world 2: yoshi's island, it is one of the best games of all time and possibly the best platformer of all time, yet didn't get as noticed in greater history because it was released during the last days.

Though I don't think I'd consider it "classic," the extra levels at the end were awesome.

I remember renting the game repeatedly just to play the level where you're flying in space as Super Sonic, chasing after Robotnik. Man, that was so cool. That level alone encouraged me to buy the Mega Collection on PS2 a few days ago.

Classic? Not so much ... but that one level was epic. I loved it.

Personally I think the Sonic series was great until it started going to three dimensions. Sonic 3d Blast was probably the first step, and then the next one was the Sonic game that was on Dreamcast. I forget the name. Sonic Heroes takes the cake as worst Sonic franchise ever, though.

Maybe if you were considering S&K with Sonic 3 locked on as one game to be a classic. Otherwise it doesn't hold up to Sonic 1 & 2 let alone Sonic CD (best of the Sonic games).

yes. but it was a game that also functioned as an expansion pack as well

... I really liked Sonic and Knuckles...

But then again Knuckles was (and still is) my favorite Sonic character, so it was like one of those little dreams you never think will come true, come true.

Well thats my point it was an average expansion pack if not for Sonic 3 enhanced. So its only a classic if you have a copy of Sonic 3 on hand.

Was it S&K or Sonic 3 where you get near the end of the game, and as Sonic, you get to "fight" Knuckles? Was it 3? I loved how he stopped you, and punched the air right before the fight.... Although it was an easy battle, that was one of my favorite parts.
