I just wanted to know what do you recommend to clean a used cube with smudges and what seems to be lots of dust inside of the air vents from a used cube from EB. This is for my nephew so I want to make it look nice for him when I give it to him this weekend. Any suggestions?

You know, of everyone on CAG that posts these "give me advice" threads, you seem to be the one that follows our suggestions the least. How many people told you NOT to get back together with your ex and you did it anyway? You know you're not gonna listen to any advice on this one either so why bother?

dude...

1. is this the OTT forums? NO

2. I don't give a shit about your opinion about me and my gf. We have been together for 9 months now and everything is going great. You want to be an ass and attack me , do it in the OTT forums.

3. Because your an ass about everything I say and ask, I don't want to hear about what you have to say. SO fuck OFF!

just use goo gone on sticky shit on it.
Then spray some windex on a napkin, wipe it, then use some duster LIGHTLY to get all the dust off.

And if you cant get it all off the side of the cube in the little squares, twist a q-tip between each little square to get it all out.

thanks for the input. I thought it would be that easy but I never had to deal with used hardware from EB before. I already got some kid games for my 5 year old nephew so all is good.

ah just ignore RedvsBlue... he just has a lot of anger with himself and the world.

If I were you I would try to take the case/shell off the Cube so that I could clean it really good separately. You could then dust the case, maybe even vacuum the air vents if you have a small vacuum with a brush nozzle. I wouldn't clean the case with windex because I've read that the ammonia dissolves the plastic. It won't eat a hole in it of course, but you'll be removing just a tiny bit off the surface. I think a paper towel (or a cloth) dipped in soapy water would be fine. Then if you also find dust on the electronics inside the Cube you could just take some canned air and blow it off.

Then again, I've never opened my Cube so I don't know if there are any wires attached to the case that would make it tricky to remove it.

Nah, your just pissed cause I hit too close to the truth. Your girlfriend's gonna end up being a crazy bitch again and your cheap Gamecube's gonna end up crappin' out on you as well. Face it, you're screwed in life and your "give me advice" threads.

While I have no idea what thread you're talking about, and I don't usually like to pick sides in an argument I'm not involved in, I have to say that asking opinions on relationships and cleaning a system are quite different. Telling somebody "don't go out with somebody you care about," while sometimes the best advice, isn't exactly the same as letting somebody know the best way to clean up a system so that it looks and plays like new.

As for your cleaning problem, I'd say go with the soap and water that someone suggested. Should kill all the germs and remove any smudges you've got. If you really want to clean it out, you could always take the top off and dust/use canned air as somebody else suggested. It's really quick and easy to take the cover off (assuming you have the correct tools needed), and shouldn't take you any more than 5 minutes to take it off and put it back on.

thanks for the input..

I cleaned it up using some of the methods recommended earlier (soap and water :O uh...) like using the air can. I used a soft cloth on the lens and cleaned it nicely. The side vent ports are now dust free thanks to the air can. Looks almost brand new, with the exception of the minor scratches, but in time he will probably scratch it himself. Got him a second controller and a 64mb memory card and a few games (some of which were my own that I don't play anymore).. that should really tie him over for years... until he starts bitching for my collection :(... hell no I am not letting a 5 year old scratch my game cube discs, he already scratched up a few of my dvds. :p

So far I have tested it and have experienced no problems.
thanks everyone for the help!

Swabbed mine thoroughly with rubbing alcohol to disinfect and remove superficial grime. Hope that doesn't ruin the plastic, but it seems OK.

1. Bottled isopropyl ("rubbing") alcohol (even the 70%) is too strong for getting rid of dust and lint. Dilute with water it down to the point where there is no longer a smell. Be very careful when using any liquid to clean PCB.

2. You'll need a specialized drill bit and a long bit screw driver to open the system. There are no cords or anything to hold the top part on. It comes off like a car hood would and is very easy to clean like the SNES and PS1.

This opens the console
This opens the game carts

You'll need a bit screw driver which can easily be found anywhere.
