It is clearly indicated in the Bing ToS that they prizes have no warranty, so technically speaking, you have no point to argue when you call them. However, most of the people you will talk to at XBOX Support won't have a clue what Bing is, and will extend the warranty based on your order/shipping email dates.
Course, the last time I did it was about 9 months ago, so things may have changed.
Here is what I did (4 times in all):
- go online with the console and register it;
- go to the xbox.com support page and look at the warranty info;
- pretend to be shocked that the warranty is already expired (or mostly expired);
- call XBOX Support in a very confused state wondering why my 'brand new from Microsoft' console warranty is already expired...
Keep in mind that Microsoft never claimed the consoles were refurbs, and they came nicely repackaged, so play dumb and don't mention the fact that you suspect it is a refurb...
It is a new console.
You just got it directly from MS.
And you are wondering why the warranty did not start when you first got it?
Just remember that you are scamming them... So, if you start to get impolite or persistent, all they have to do is pass the call up the chain of command until you get someone that knows/reads the Bing ToS and that will be the end of that call. So, be polite, naive, friendly and generally confused as to why your console is no longer covered...
Also, I called shortly after I got my consoles. So, they were all still fully functional at the time, and it had only been a couple weeks from the date on the shipping/tracking email.
And, if you are looking into this because your console is needing repair, I would straighten out the warranty issue before mentioning that it needs to be fixed. Bumping the warranty on a working console to keep a customer happy is one thing, presumably because the console may not fail during that year, so there is a small gamble they may lose $ -- worth taking the chance to keep the customer happy, both about the console as well as Bing. But bumping the warranty on a broken console is 100% loss for them, especially if they are aware of the fact that Bing ToS specifically voids any warranty.
This is exactly what I did. The woman told me it was a refurb that had been purchased last year and the only way to extend the warranty was to pay for it. I told her I got it directly from Microsoft and she put me on hold for 10 minutes while she spoke to two people above her.
Oh well, it's not a big deal. It's a Jasper unit and by the time the warranty runs out the rumored slims may be available.
Unfortunately I do have to send it in. Since day one the console would lose connection to my controllers at random times. It rarely happened within the first 15 minutes of turning it on, which I suspect is how it made it out of the repair center without being fixed. I was waiting until I was going to be away from home for a week or two before calling in for an RMA, but last night it decided to stop connecting to controllers completely.
