CNET editor James Kim missing. UPDATE - Found deceased, family alive.
Maybe he got jumped and sodomized by a bear.
Dude, is that really necessary?

I'm hoping for the best. He's one of CNET's more likable personalities.

It seems REALLY strange that neither of them used a cell phone to call for help...

One of the articles said there was no reception out there, but they found them because of the very faint pings of one of the phones.

Uh, you do realize that MANY places in the US do not get reception on cell phones? Hell, I can't get reception at my boyfriend's parents' place because they live in Bumfuckville, Ohio.
I don't get it. He said he was going to go back, but then he leaves his pants as a sign? Did he get lost?

And why would you leave your pants if it was freezing cold??
When Hypothermia sets in people get very hot and start shedding clothes. Hopefully he left the pants as a sign, but I doubt it. We've had a few cases of this up here recently where they find clothes first and body second.

Article speculating on what the pants being left could mean: (Raises the same point starman made as I was typing this up.)

http://www.playfuls.com/news_05431_Kim8217s_Pants_8211_Good_Sign_Bad_Sign.html

Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police said Kim went about two miles along the road then headed down into a drainage area and the pants left in the snow could be a good sign, showing he is still alive. “It could be a sign he’s trying to indicate the path he was going,” Hastings said.

On the other hand, Dr. Jon Jui, professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, warns that it could also be ominous. This could mean Kim is suffering from severe hypothermia, which causes people to become disoriented and have a false sense of warmth, thus removing clothing.

And a private satellite is being rerouted to help with the search.:

Not sure how much help that will be, but they should put the shots up on the web and solicit volunteers to comb over them. Maybe somehow make it so you volunteer to go over a very specific region of one picture. Then dole those out and have more than one person on each segment if possible.

This is *not* gonna end up well... dude's lost in the woods with no pants. Sadly, this may be curtains for James Kim.

I'm going to remain optomistic on this. I agree with the suggestion that he obviously had more than one pair of pants, given that they were packed for a long trip. Simply asking the wife "did he leave with more than one pair of pants," which I'm sure they have, would put that issue to bed. And the fact that they found a few other items later sounds like he was trying to leave a trail. Still have my fingers crossed for this guy. One thing's for sure: If he survives, he's going to get a heck of a book out of this.

I have been following this event since last week and I had no clue that James Kim was from Cnet. I thought he looked familiar though. Its good to hear his wife and kids turned out okay, I hope the authorities find him soon as well.

I don't get it. What happened to his family? Are they OK? It says he left to go get help for his family. Can someone fill me in?

My understanding: something happened to their car, the family stayed back while he left the vehicle to go and find someone.

Did they get found? Is this not what happened?

Thanks..

The car got lost on some off-the-beaten-path dirt road, stuck in the snow. They used the car's heater at night to stay warm, then burnt the tires.

After 9 days, James Kim left to try and find help.

About 2 days later, a helicopter found the car with the Wife and two children (they're safe).

Now, it's about 2 days after that and they're searching for Kim who has been out in the wilderness for like 4 days.

From what I understand, they were going on a small road and got lost and stuck in snow. He was traveling back to San Francisco with his two young daughters and his wife. After several days, he went to go find help and never returned. Two days later, a search helicopter spotted the family and rescued the wife and kids. They are now looking for James Kim.

They were supposed to be in San Francisco last Monday. so I am guessing they have been stuck since then.

Well, they've started dropping "care packages" for him, with MREs, blankets, flares, and other various things.

Latest report sounds a little more encouraging:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/12/06/BAGGTMQGS24.DTL

"Little signs are being left by James,'' said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police. Various items, including a wool sock, a girl's skirt and part of an Oregon state map, have been found by crews lowered into the canyon where Kim is believed to have walked after leaving his wife and two children to get help.

The items, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said, were "laid out in a well-defined area'' as if in patterns for someone to follow along.

...

Tuesday morning, rescue teams found a pair of extra jeans apparently left by Kim, and later in the day, discovered several shirts and the other items.

"Our belief is they are little signs being left by James for anyone trying to find him ... (and that) he is continuing to move," Hastings said.

My mother is watching the news, she just told me there's a "possible body found". Apparently helicopters see what looks like a body laying face down. Keep your fingers crossed he's ok....

"Just In: Body of James Kim located today"

The police officer couldn't even speak, he had to walk away from the mic :(

I think we've all seen this before, bear wears clothing, plays dead, then hops up, jumps up into the helicopter, eats everyone inside and flys to bermuda.

He's been found! http://www.ktvu.com/news/10436601/detail.html

The problem? No one knows if he's dead or alive yet. I really do hope he's alive.

EDIT: Shit, CNN.com is saying he is dead.

EDIT2: "This sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before." -Butthead from Beavis and Butthead Do America
I think that quote is appropriate in this situation... this really fucking sucks ass for all involved.

I think we can all learn from this. Its better to stay where you were stuck and stick it out rather then brave the elements.

EDIT : RIP

That really is rule number 1 if you get lost, but they had already been out there for a week before James took off for help. I think anyone else would have headed out much much sooner.

As a big fan of his work going back to his days on TechTV, this is a huge shock. God bless him and his family. Rest in peace James, you will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

RIP Its weird but his death feels more personal then other "celebrities." I wonder if they'll tell us what he died of, was it hypothermia, starvation, poisonous food etc.

Sucks.

It's strange, because I found about the news that they were missing from here, and later that day, my dad asked me to look up a good MP3 player for my mother for Christmas. I used CNET to decide which one I wanted a few years ago, and hit them up again because I knew their portable audio reviews were pretty good. I ended up convincing him to get the Zen Vision V, 2GB, and mostly because Kim had a nice video review on it.

I find it strange because I haven't visited CNET in years, and the very week Kim dies, I use a video review of his to help out my dad.

Sure sounds like hypothermia. Near the end, you feel like you're burning up and strip off your clothes. That would explain why he was in a creek without his pants.
RIP Its weird but his death feels more personal then other "celebrities." I wonder if they'll tell us what he died of, was it hypothermia, starvation, poisonous food etc.
I know what you mean; I'm still trying to figure out why I care so much. I'm curious as to how he died, too, but if the report finds out that he died this morning or last night, I'm going to be severely depressed.

I think this is especially tragic and frustrating for several reasons:

- The guy was a geek and a journalist, two things a lot of us can identify with.

- His family survived while he passed away trying to save them. It's good because I'm sure he would have wanted it that way, but damn it's sad.

- Because his family survived, there was a lot of hope that he too would be found alive, which made it especially hard to take when he wasn't.

- In retrospect, there wasn't a whole lot he could have or should have done differently, given the situation. He waited with his family for as long as he could before striking out for help. Any one of us would have used the same rationale.

He's a hero in my book. He and his wife kept their heads and managed to keep the entire family alive for a week at which point James set out, I'm sure after giving a lot of thought as to what would be the best plan to get his family out alive.

This story is more compelling than your typical celeb death for a few reasons IMO.

Played out over several days and the guy died trying to save his life and the lives of his family.

This was on CNN.com:
Searchers planned to drop 18 numbered rescue packages containing clothing, emergency gear and other survival provisions into the area Wednesday in hopes that Kim could find one. The packages, clear plastic bags the size of pillows, also contained a note from his family.

Searchers said the packages would be dropped in a 3-square-mile area where "hot spots" showed up two nights earlier in thermal imaging.
That would have been really nice if they dropped the packages and he were still alive. At least he would have been able to find out that his family was okay.

Synchronicity

This sucks, I was big fan of his reviews and loved to watch him back in the day on tech tv. It takes some balls to do what he did, and showed he really loved his famliy. He was a real hero. RIP

Excellent points, Tybee. And like CitizenB said, it really does feel more personal. He was one of us. Very, very sad.
