Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police said Kim went about two miles along the road then headed down into a drainage area and the pants left in the snow could be a good sign, showing he is still alive. “It could be a sign he’s trying to indicate the path he was going,” Hastings said.
On the other hand, Dr. Jon Jui, professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, warns that it could also be ominous. This could mean Kim is suffering from severe hypothermia, which causes people to become disoriented and have a false sense of warmth, thus removing clothing.
"Little signs are being left by James,'' said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police. Various items, including a wool sock, a girl's skirt and part of an Oregon state map, have been found by crews lowered into the canyon where Kim is believed to have walked after leaving his wife and two children to get help.
The items, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said, were "laid out in a well-defined area'' as if in patterns for someone to follow along.

Tuesday morning, rescue teams found a pair of extra jeans apparently left by Kim, and later in the day, discovered several shirts and the other items.
"Our belief is they are little signs being left by James for anyone trying to find him ... (and that) he is continuing to move," Hastings said.
That would have been really nice if they dropped the packages and he were still alive. At least he would have been able to find out that his family was okay.Searchers planned to drop 18 numbered rescue packages containing clothing, emergency gear and other survival provisions into the area Wednesday in hopes that Kim could find one. The packages, clear plastic bags the size of pillows, also contained a note from his family.
Searchers said the packages would be dropped in a 3-square-mile area where "hot spots" showed up two nights earlier in thermal imaging.
