I thought I'd have a thread (upon recommendation) where I could 'showcase' my work and be able to keep the OP updated. Since I stay at home, generally I have more time to work on this than others might.

This is primarily a picture thread. Don't bitch about '56K N0 YUO!!!!'

I can do Dreamcast DVD covers at this time. In the very near future, I will be working on Saturn and PS1 DVD covers. Let me figure out which style I'm going to use first.

Feel free to request what you would like to see done. But, there are a couple of groundrules to remember when requesting covers:
1) I do this in my spare time when my other household duties are done and my girls don't need my attention. Please be patient when requesting a cover.
2) Please, one request at a time. I will go in order of requests. After I have completed your cover, you can post a NEW reply for the next cover you would like done. *READ* Until I find an acceptable format for the Saturn and PS1 covers (I might even venture farther back than that), if you use one of those formats as your request, I will skip over you for the next DC cover request. Once I start on those formats, I will at that point backtrack to your request. I will let you know when I start on other formats.
3) This is completely free from me. So therefore if you don't like the quality of the images I use, find me better ones
4) I will listen to suggestions for refinement. Please utilize PMs for that.
5) I don't have the ability to print these for you, or even myself. So if you enjoy the effort I put into these, donations would be welcome for me to have them printed for myself.

This isn't the Playa Haters Club, Bucknasty. Therefore, please keep the negative comments to yourself.
There is one thing I need to know, though. On the DC covers, if the original cover has the black curve, do I keep the black or switch to white? White is more uniform, but it's also more work for me.

Printing information: When I get these available to download via Snackbar (one of the JS functions last night wasn't working), you could either print them yourself, or ask (very nicely) for Speed Racer to print them for you. He charges $1.25 shipped for each cover you need (price may change without notice) and from what I hear, he does excellent work on a commercial-style floor printer.

Will all that BS out of the way, here are the covers: (links to printable versions will be available SOON. Please give me a day or so to get it setup on Snackbar or otherwise. I also need to make sure the spines line up before you waste your ink)
7/12 Covers added - Aerowings2, Crazy Taxi2, Ikaruga, Power Stone, SF Rush 2049, Sonic Adventure

In regard to the white/black situation, I think you should stay true to whatever the initial cover had. if it had white, use white. Black, use black.

I think this is a great project. I would like to have all of my games in DVD cases. I'll go ahead and make the first request:

I don't think he'd need anything as it's easy enough to upload the covers to snackbar-games.com, but other people posting raw scans might use it.

Anyway, if you're good, I can post 300dpi scans of all the dreamcast games I have (around 20 or so). I might not use them since I'm happy with the CD cases, but I'm sure others will. Here are a couple for right now.

These are all the DC games I own and they're all complete except Pen Pen. If anyone wants to make a request, try to request something from my collection before anything else, I guess.

And http://www.covergalaxy.com/list/Dreamcast/all/ has some high-quality DC scans (mostly fronts though). Those should help a little.

Appreciate it. They should fit on Snackbar, but you never know. I do believe I'm going with the white spine/curve layout.

A lot of people will ask me why I chose this. I'm going with this because I think the orange area harkens to the DC power light. I also think using the actual title image on the cover makes it look more like it would from the factory. If I use the black curve, then like SMMM told me, I'd have to go with a black spine. Not going to happen, at least on my part. Typing the spine would be so much easier and make everything match up better, but that's the choice I made. If you prefer typed, it's really easy to white-out the title and do it yourself.

All the images I'm using are straight from the packaging and stretched to fit. The front looks great printed, but the back does look a little stretched. Not horrible, but I'm still weighing options for another display. If I can find something else, great. Otherwise, they stay. Suggestions welcome, but it needs to be something I can duplicate for every title.

Here's what it looks like in case. This is with HP Everyday Photo Paper and a crappy printer.

You might notice I've made a slight revision to the covers. I added a uniform SEGA logo on the curve. Why? The covers with no logo there looked really odd when viewed in animation. And, the covers that did have it had it in different hues. This way they all match. I know only 1st party (?) games had this originally, so call it an 'artistic tweak.'

Snackbar is having issues at the moment, otherwise they'd already be upped.

Ikaruga is currently second on the list. 4tygames gets first dibs on what he wants, as he posted at the end of the other thread.
I don't have any requests.
Just wanted to say you're doing an awesome job, CocheseUGA.
Hey, I really do appreciate that.

45 minute version of Ikaruga is up. LMK what you think. I can do different things with the spine. It's hard to see, but it's an inverse of the Japanese writing on the front cover.

I'll probably be working on one of my titles today unless someone has another request. Oh yeah, and if you'd like, I could sure use the donations. I got hosed $1000 through Paypal and am fighting with my CC to get it back. Don't know if it will happen though. PM me for details.

How about some quake 3 arena love? btw its a black cover and I wanna see how you handle black covers :D

Sounds like a challenge. :D You're on. Need to doe some housework before I start on it though.

Oh...just the curve is black? No biggie. Aerowings2 and Ikaruga were black too.

That's why I posted the comparison pic. If people don't like it they can *gasp* not try it.

You can use some of the inlay artwork for the back of the cover. That way it won't stretch as bad.

Also, the Cover Galaxy website SMMM posted has enough scans (front, back, inlay) for a Sega Smash Pack cover.

Also, use the Game Scanner site. There are many high quality scans on there like the Quake 3 Arena. Link
The Game Scanner site has many games that have the front, back, and inlay scans.

The Game Scanner site is nice, but it's not going to help in the long-term. Not enough quality scans.

OK, I decided to test something before I do any more covers:

I have a few (maybe 10 or so) Dreamcast games and I'd LOVE to have them in White DVD cases with these covers, however, I don't have a printer, etc.

Would anyone be willing to print some of these and sell them to me or something (OP)?

Also - where is the best place to buy white DVD covers to do this?

Thanks,

Will

As the OP says, I don't have the resources to print quality covers. Try Speed Racer.

As for white cases, try here.

I like B a lot! The only problem I see is Sonic Adventure, Sonic, Amy, and Knuckles look kind of squished. The other covers look great!
As in Speed Racer the CAG?
No, Speed Racer the show. If you watch it long enough, you can get anything.
If anyone is interested in having the video game inserts that are available for download printed out but don't have the resources to do it I'm offering a print service at a cost of $0.35 per insert plus a small S&H fee. I can print them out on a thin, glossy cardstock that will hold up better than paper. The printer I use is a high end commercial grade color laser that's as big as a washing machine, no kidding, and it does an incredible job. The only thing I ask is that you order a minimum of two inserts because the sheets I use are 12" x 18" and this will help prevent wasting the cardstock. If you check my feedback you'll see that I already have two very satisfied customers.
Yes, Speed Racer the CAG.

I think you should add that to the OP, Corchese. So that people'll stop asking..

That was the only decent hi-res pic I could find. I really just did it so they would all have a reference point. If the girls take a nap, I can work on one of your requests.

Yeah, there's a lot more customization needed for those than people realize...here, try this:

Also, this site has a ton of good videogame art (but you'll need to register):

Updated the OP with SR's contact info. I also realized I hadn't been doing them in 300dpi, only 72dpi. That will be fixed before they are uploaded. (Be patient)

They look awesome so far - can't wait til you get around to some of the games I own *cough*hint: Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Virtua Tennis, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage, Zombie Revenge*cough*
go with b, and yeah i'd use white dvd cases, if u cant find them anywhere ebay has them.
Yeah, B's the way to go. Too much stretching is a bad thing. Also, I noticed only Sonic Adventure and Power Stone have the orange triangle on the front curve. Do you plan on adding that to everything else?

I tried to incorporate a standard curve with triangle for every cover, but could not get the curve area to be opaque while the cover area was transparent. Maybe I missed how to do it, but I couldn't get it to work. The triangles will be on there if they came like that originally.

Just a little word of advice to anyone that's contributing image material to this project. When you scan the artwork be sure to use the "descreen" option in your scanning software because this will improve the image quality by helping to eliminate what's called a moire pattern that's commonly found in printed material. If you don't, small dots will be visible in the image.

i will deffiently be using this but if i have time ill go the mooky jooky way and completely recreate the covers.

Thanks for posting the actual real life picture of the cover in use, I wanted to see one in the PSOne thread but no go. Now I'm even more interested in this, good work.

ehh...I have no idea how to do that. I have an HP scanjet 3500c. Maybe it doesn't have an option for that?

Edit: I just read you can also scan at 1200dpi, then resample it by 25% to get a better effect. Sounds like a plan to me.

I'm going to try and see if I can't get these uploaded to snackbar today (if it works) in 300dpi. Other than that, I don't think a whole lot is going to get done until Sunday. When my wife is off work, I tend to have a whole lot less free time. I'll see what I can do, though.

OK, added links for you to download in the OP. I updated the Sonic Adventure cover, but I can't edit it in the OP due to photobucket maint. Also, the Crazy Taxi 2 cover turned out crappy when put into 300dpi. Aerowings2 is ok, but unless I missed it, everything else looks good. Sonic and Power Stone look the best by far, however. Better images will help.

When I find a better image of the CT2 back cover, I'll fix it.

Some stuff was pointed out to me that I could improve upon. So, until such a time as I can improve upon it, I won't be creating any new covers. I need to completely redo the template to obtain a proper 300dpi. As I borrowed the template from someone else, I'll have to do a new one from scratch. I'm not anticipating starting on it for a few days, so bear with me.

well, just so you know, Snowcone's back from vacation and should be updating Snackbar again beginning tomorrow morning.

Thanks for doing the Ikaruga. I'll print it up unless you think you might do another version with the title in English on the spine?
Thanks for doing the Ikaruga. I'll print it up unless you think you might do another version with the title in English on the spine?
I really didn't like how the english turned out, so the spine will stay the same. ATM, I'm contemplating a new layout. It's basically the same, but redone in total 300dpi from scratch. Perhaps a different use of the logos and colors as well. I will say that I have a lot less free time coming up than I did, so expect things to really slow down. I'll try to have at least one new cover a week, though.

OK, I made a new template. It's kinda hard to tell, but I included the curve and triangle. NM the Sonic Adventure part, but that's where the title will be.

Unfortunately, I have in-laws coming into town tomorrow. Here's what I need: 300dpi (or close) scans of the BACKs of any games you have. Front I can find readily, it's the backs that are rare. Or, point me in the direction.

If it looks better, I can redo the top portion like the old ones were. Haven't decided which I like better. The new one follows the current gen style a little more.

did u mess with the dreamcast logo's font or something? its alittle tall too. and wats the little grey marks on the end of each of them.

It's a completely different image. I'm starting to like the other one better, but I don't know if I can make it look ok, because it's only 72dpi.

And I think the grey marks you see are the TM designations. I would take those off if I used this one.

Holy crap dude. Great work, those are freakin awesome!

as far as a request goes.. could you make Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or Toy Commander? Whatever is easier for you as far as images go. Thanks!
If the original design is only 72dpi it's going to be near if not impossible to increase the resolution and still get a high quality printout from it. If you have access to the original graphics material I suggest you start from scratch with a 300dpi image. I realize that might be big hassle but it's probably your only option at this point.
