Apologies again, I have no ability to animate and add the snow and if anyone wants to improve anything I post, feel free as I am definitely no artist by any means.

I'm going to come up with a little contest. Also, I will grant two avatars this evening.

The contest will be along the lines of either come up with an original idea or fulfill someone's request for a cocksmas avatar. Then I can either do a random pull from those or I can open up a vote for whoever's is the best. Prize will be something from Steam, so those without gaming pcs get fucked but oh well.

Good call on getting the ball rolling for some quality cocksmithing. CK, I don't have PS or have the slightest clue how to animate, but I don't want to make them and put it on you to animate the whole time so if there's anyone else who can add the snow, it'd be a big help to lend a hand.

You get a choice. I used too much variation in color trying to do the fur so the transparency on the snowflakes makes a billion colors and makes it way over 20.5kb. So, you can either take this lossy animated version, or a static one.

Also, I normally PM people when they I make one for them but your inbox is full so fix that.

Hey how do you make a Microsoft Paint image exactly 50x50 ?

thanks

EDIT : nevermind I figured it out but I went ahead and made is 101x101 instead.

Does anyone know how I can add the falling snow animation into the pic? I used the original template and edited it with paint.

nice guys.

i'll come up with something for the snowing. maybe a .psd or i'll just link the individual frames since theres only 8 or so i think. i'll do a sweep of the thread tomorrow and trim/touch up/add animation to all the avatars I see that haven't had it done yet.

Lol thanks man, took me a couple hours since I was tweaking it here and there while working. The thing is that you can barely tell that it resembles a penis, but it's hidden in there so if you look long enough you will notice .

You're not doing a bad job yourself with the several ones you posted. I especially liked the Dick Tracy one.

Sounds good. Hopefully we'll get more entries :D. To tell you the truth I didn't even know that there was a contest I just made one for fun haha.

Ahh.. I rushed part of this just to see if it would work but think I've got the animation down... CK- any advice on keeping the gif under 20.5k?

this is where the "you don't have to do it pixel by pixel but it should look like it" comes in. anti-aliasing and blending with more than one color adds a ton of color information especially if your snowflakes are transparent (since then it has to create the various shades of color to make it look like the snowflake is passing over the top).

there are a few things you can do. first, clean up your image. use as few colors as it takes to make your finished product and be wary when creating in photoshop with anything other than the pencil tool. for example, the teeth on that particular avatar are clearly anti-aliased, using shades of grey instead of white and black. so you could redo the teeth and eliminate a few colors there.

next, your snowflakes have some sort of transparency on them. you can tell because they look nice and crisp when they're floating in midair (nothing for the transparency to work with so photoshop just says fuck it) and "blurry" when they pass over the avatar's body. this is the same issue with my snowing animation. its nice since it doesn't obscure the avatar as much, but it adds more colors and when 20.5 is your limit every color counts. so you could redo your snowflakes to be solid non-aliased objects.

if you want to be really lazy like me and say "well shit i don't feel like redoing an animation" (i still recommend redoing the teeth and eyes if only for aesthetic reasons) there are a few things you can mess with assuming you're using photoshop. when you go to save your file be sure to pick save for web and devices. this will pop some shit up with a bunch of options. here, you're going to want to find a balance between loss and color that still ends up being under 20.5kb. this balance is something you'll have to find yourself for each image and is "to taste" meaning maybe in this image you want more colors or in this one a grainy animation actually adds to the image so you can get away with really bumping up the loss while keeping your colors. if you made your base image with only a few colors, say 8 or 10, transparency colors accounted for, you can usually get away with 32 or less colors and it will still be full or close to full quality. if you've got a lot of base colors, 32 will still be your goal, but you'll almost certainly have to make the image lossy to compensate. here is where you find your balance.

Thanks for taking the time to explain. I'm using Gimp but I've played around with it enough where everything you just said makes sense (at least enough to know how to correct what I'm doing).

That particular one I just took a logo, "pixelated" it and copy/pasted it into the template to use as a tester for animating. But I think I might use it if I can get it under the limit (it's only at 25k now) since I rocked the teenage mutant ninja cock last year too. As for the snow fall... I've BEEN using the pencil brush (or at least the pixel size tip) for everything but went with a bigger paintbrush tip for the snow and left whatever default coloring settings. I think I'm gonna re-do the snowfall because I effed up on one side of things.

Sounds like my tron cock is SOL as far as animating unless I totally redo it seeing as how I abused the hell out of the "blur" tool to get the left nut to look like it does, but good to know for the future. Too bad about the 20.5k limit.. wasn't there debate over upping that limit specifically for cocksmas last year?

i'm not picking on you qig (ok i am) but your meatboy avatar is a perfect example of how not to do this. LET US LEARN!

i just spent 10 mins or so cleaning the original meatboy avatar you did. heres the comparison:
110vj21.png

The original had a total of 208 colors. The new one has 12. So whats the deal? I would say it almost looks like compression artifacts on the original. This usually happens when you save an image in a lossy format (such as a jpeg) and is why you/I/we use a lossless format, the .png (also transparency). However, your image is a .png so I'm not really sure how that came about. It also happens if you try to resize an image. The program runs its algorithms and does a pretty good job at resizing but i have yet to find a raster program that can do it pixel perfect (thats a vector program's forte!). Anyway, its pretty easy to see the variety of colors we have on the pixels which stands out real quick when we're going for "looks like its done pixel by pixel." Even in the mass of red, I found several varieties of red which once again points to compression artifacting.

So how do you avoid this? Bust out that pencil and paint bucket tool and make sure your bucket isn't set to anti-alias. Want to try an effect like a color burn on your sexy low color image? Do the color burn and study how it effects the pixels. Note the change in shade and color and any patterns you see. Then, try to recreate it by hand one pixel at a time.

Here are your avatars.

i remember this being a frustration for me with gimp. i was never able to find out how to turn off anti-aliasing which is what gives things their blurred edge in an attempt to make it look smooth. in photoshop its just a little checkbox. however, you can always use paint. in fact, the only time i use photoshop is at the end to put the snow on or if i need to do a lot of detail (because you can zoom in way further in photoshop so you can still get a natural flow even if only on a few pixels). otherwise I just stick with paint for these. its less cluttered.

Good stuff, I'm not offended at all as any criticism I'm taking constructively and I'm picking up a lot of information about the whole process along the way.

On this one though, I have to defend myself and say that I originally did the meat boy in paint and it looked almost exactly like your finished product (sans snow) and maybe had 10 colors altogether; only I saved it as a jpg not knowing the difference at that point and that's when it got all crapped on. I did a lazy fix (yes it was way worse) on my 2nd edit but didn't split hairs since I work on these at 800% zoom and it looked 'ok' when I shrunk it back down and then saved it in the png format as you mentioned after updating the OP.

Definitely learning a lot from your posts/this process
