I wasn't going to, as I figured they had concentrated on multi-player, and while I like MP, I really need good single player story to motivate me to spend $60.

But I just heard an interview on Full Moon Podcast with the Infinity Ward people, and they said that the feature they are the most proud of is the single player story mode. I have also read some people who played preview builds say the the campaign mode is pretty good too.

I am picking this badboy up at lunch tommorrow, on EB's 3for1 deal.

Post your impressions here if you picked it up. I'll eventually rename the thread "official COD4 discussion thread"...

I'm strongly considering it, but I don't know...it's an FPS and God knows I've been playing too many of those recently.

Gametrailers video review is going up later today, that should be able to make me decide one way or another.

Yeah, I hear you. I can afford two games for the rest of this year. I am definitely getting Ratchet or Uncharted next. I was interested in Haze too, but will likely be too FPS'd by then.

You know I was going to start this thread early ...... but I just forgot.

Got it pre-ordered.

Anyway I've been hearing rumors that the SP is only 6 hours long. If that's true, then you'll be spending $10 an hour snowsquirrel. I'm mainly in it for the MP myself.

Yeah, Assassins Creed and Uncharted are my must haves for the rest of the year...everything else is just if I have the money or if I'm really really bored.

Haze looks awesome, and 4 player online co-op is always a winner...just the fact it's an FPS will probably keep me from grabbing it at release. I'd rather play Haze than COD4 though I'm thinking since I guess the general consensus is not much has changed with COD4.

1st reviews coming in :whistle2:

IGN - Call Of Duty 4 offers 16 maps and thirteen multiplayer variants out of the box. PS3 and 360 support 18 players online (a number that could increase at a later date) with PC offering 32-player matches. Other than the number count, multiplayer is identical for all three systems. This is in terms of modes, map layouts, visual fidelity, and performance. Top to bottom, COD4 runs fantastically. On consoles you may see a few random moments of lag hit, but in my experience, these were so rare that I hardly noticed them.

Final Verdict 9.4

1UP - 9.5

Looks like a good one.. I have it pre-ordered for the PS3.. Loved COD2 so this one should be fun.. The single player demo on the PC was great.. Now I just have to make sure the PS3 is the platform I want it on. Torn at the moment between that and the 360.. Can not imagine playing this on the DS.. he he he

No clue if it has online co-op, but I'm passing on it after watching the video review...seems like every other war FPS so I don't need it until it's ~$20.

I'd rather get Haze since it's by Free Radical.
does it have online co-op? If it doesn't I may wait for Haze too... I just assumed all the AAA FPS titles did now.

~S
No co-op. One of the few downfalls.

Annoying that gametrailers review is 360 only, especially when the rumours have been that the ps3 version looks slightly better. Having said that, Infinity Ward have stated many times that they are visually the same. But including some ps3 footage would have atleast cleared that up. (around 6:13 a ps3 button shows up, but looks like all the rest is 360 footage).

Hmmm... now I am on the fence, this or Haze. I pretty much have to do the EB trade this week, as the 3 games I was going to use for the EB trade 3 deal are all right on the $8 mark, so if one drops in TIV, then I can't get either.

60fps sounds sweet... I am pretty sure Haze is going to be 30fps.... I am going to have sleep on it.

I say go for Haze, that's what I'm doing.

Some stores sold Call of Duty 4 as early as Friday. Unfortunately, I'm not too fond of 1st or 3rd person shooters. I wanted Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, but my local mom and pop store didn't received their shipment today.

!?!? EXPLAIN YOURSELF
any difference between ps3 and 360?
according to reviews no, but i am very sure the ps3 version has better lighting and textures, at the least better sound. Thats what i read on a preview posted at gaf. The point is the 360 version is not bad so i guess thats why there isn't major comparions.

explain yourself
Getting OT, but EB (at least in canada) has a deal where you can trade in any 3 games worth $8 or more for a pre-order, if the game is on their list. Funny thing is, that the list is not shite games, but mostly heavy hitters. I can't recall if Haze was on the list, but Ass Creed was, and so was COD4. Uncharted was not.

I'm not much of a FPS type of player. I have Halo 3, Gears of War and the Orange box and they didn't hold my interest for long. But COD 4 was a big surprise. After playing the beta, I was hooked. Now I just have to decide which version to get. You would be a fool not to buy this masterpiece.

Oh and even though there's no online co-op, there is up to 4 player split online.

The GameZone reviews give the PS3 the edge. 9.6 vs 9.5 for 360. Basically they give the graphics to the ps3, multiplayer to the 360, but overall the PS3 wins out (all be it by a slim margin).

I just hope the PS3 version lives up to the 360 version. I am going to grab the PS3 verison as at least for now there seem to be less of the 12 year old whiney kids playing (not that all 12 year old are whiney.. some older people are as well). From the little I play online the PS3 community seems a bit more mature.

What?? That can't be true! 360 always has better versions! Of everything!

I am excited as hell for this game. PS3, 360 hell I just want to play this game. I'll probably get it for PS3 since I'm getting one hopefully this week. I am super pumped to play it. I gotta buy it quick so I have a fighting chance online.
Annoying that gametrailers review is 360 only,

Actually, it shows footage from both versions. Watch carefully, you'll see the "Square" button commands pop up now and then, also, the + pad is the easiest way to tell which version your looking at. You'll see the spaces in b/w the + for the PS3 and a circular + for the 360.

What was odd was that they only mentioned the 360 in the review, with no mention of any sort of differences or -/+ b/w the two. In my opinion, thats a good thing since it means that the two are basically the same...

Word was the single player was abysmally short, can anyone confirm or deny?

I'd heard somewhere around just 4 hours, but I really, really doubt that.

omg are you fucking kidding me! They must have overlooked that... well at least we know that the PS3 version is decent. You know.. I was really upset about the lack of coverage that the PS3 version of this game received. No online beta, hardly no reviews of the Ps3 version on its own.... its like the game doesn't even exist.

oh yeah there's no TrueSkill feature with the PS3 online mode.
Got a Pre-order, but I think I'll pass. Want to get Uncharted PS3 and Mass Effect 360.
Good choice.

Uncharted FTW. FTW indeed.

Damn I'm excited for that game

Strongly considering it. For me, it was between Haze or CoD4 this xmas. I'm a sucker for the 4 player online co-op that Haze has, so, for now, I'll be getting Haze. If reviews are terrible for the game, then I'll probably get CoD4. Wish it had some sort of online co-op, as it would make the decision much easier for me.

Hopefully best buy will have it in by tomorrow. I need a fps online to hold me over till Metal Gear online comes out. I don't really care about the "short" story mode, as 6 hours is long enough for me if it's decent, and I don't play it all in one sitting. Shit I'm still only about halfway through Heavenly Sword and I got that way back. It always takes me forever to beat the story mode, except MGS.

As for CoD4, yeah, I knew about it being better on PS3 long ago. Infinity Ward even praised the PS3 console in many ways as far as what it could do, and their goal was to make the best FPS ever on PS3.

I really love COD games and this one looks amazing, but I have been burned in the past since this series seems to drop in price very quickly. Even though I really want it, I will wait.

no harm in waiting.. I'm still waiting for Ninja Gaiden to drop in price... damn... that game is stubborn
Haha, I'm the same way too. ;)

you know.. I'm glad that they went that route, and focused on making a great FPS on the PS3... but with that, I still feel cheated that the online mode for the PS3 version of the game is missing features. Unless of course what I read in regards to the TrueSkill feature missing was untrue. But if it is, that was important in terms of balacing the online game. But hey... maybe we won't need it, or perhaps it could be added via an update.
I heard 6 hours...part of the reason I'm not getting it (yet)
IGN lists it as five hours.

I won't be getting this game.

PS3 won't have True Skill that is a fact, as it is a MS proprietary algorithm.

Why is everyone stressed about TrueSkill? I think most of the people don't even know what it is. It is nothing more than a match making algorithm for matching up skill levels. Any noob programmer could come up a (slightly less refined) version of in an hour of work. I trust that if IW had the skill to get 1080p, that they have the skill to check if your kill/death ratio >= other guys kill/death ratio....

Anyways, I have to do this trade deal today, just incase a TIV drops. I am going to see if Haze is available on their list, if it is I'll take that. If not, I'll likely get COD4.

oh well I feel better now... felt like it was going to be DOOM without the "TrueSkill" feature.

Ya trueskill is a joke, never seen a game where it even came close to doing what it was suppose to.
My new favorite game of all time... 8+ hours online already. Level 25
You playing the PS3 version online? If so add me to your friends list, I'll have the game in an hour or so and want to play online

Well I just finished two hours of single player.

First impressions:
 • smoothest console FPS I have played in a while. Though I have not played Halo 3 yet.
 • Graphics the most realistic I have ever saw in a game.
 • I probably was more sucked in by the R:FoM story, but the presentation of the story in this is very cinematic.
 • the action in this game is pretty hairy. not like every other fps where you can control the pacing of the game by just backing up on the 'rails'. When you are in a fire fight, it is 360 degrees of action, until area is cleared. No luring 1 or 2 enemies out at a time. Probably how as close to combat as you'll get on your couch.
 • No cover system like gears, or R6, but you need cover to survive.
 • Emphasis on distance fighting, as opposed to the close quartered point blank blasting. But that could just be me.
 • Based on my progress so far, I would say the game will likely take me 7 hours to complete.

Things that are new to me are:
 • 'run' button - click L3 to sprint, and you automatically come out of it, when you aim, or ease off. It really does feel like running, not gliding on ice.
 • emphasis on popping in and out of scope/x-hairs (though I think this is a cod trademark).
 • playing as part of a squad, as opposed to commanding it, flying solo, or flying solo under the impression of being on a team (ala halo/resistance).

Really my only annoyances so far:
 • I use the tactical button layout. I really would like R3 and L3 swapped. (quibbling, I know).
 • At times, it is not always obvious where to go next. This is likely to give it a sandboxy feel.
 • So much is going on while sqad leader is giving directions, sometimes, I miss my Q's. (welcome to war?)
 • I find myself missing the cover system. I used to hitting the cover button, as opposed to the manual duck and hide.
 • No lean button, so you must really expose yourself to shoot around a corner. This would have been a perfect use for the SIXAXIS.

Just to make sure I wasn't kidding myself, I popped in R:FoM (which I haven't had in for 2 months). It really made me appreciate the photo-realistic sense of the game, and the 60 fps... smooth as butter. I did notice slowdown once, but there were 20 guys on screen, and 2 grenades going off. One of my first thoughts is what have other devs been doing? How can this game look so much better than anything else I have played on the PS3 so far. (My 360 experience is somewhat limited.) I really wish Haze had pushed for 60fps, even if they had to tone down other things...

I always finish single player before playing online, so nothing on that yet. Pootie, did you try single player yet?

No buyers remorse here.

Anyways, hope this helps someone make a decision.
