COD4 - official thread

Love the game, for the one time I actually got to play it. It seems to shut off my system after a few minutes of trying to play it. I mean completely, where I have to reset the power button in the back. It has happen each time I tried to play it except once, and when I did play, it was a fucking awesome game. It doesn't happen with any other games either, now I'm afraid to even try and play the game since after reading the official boards it happened with CoD3 and brick some people's system. I did call Sony and they're sending me a box to ship to them but damn does this suck, hopefully it's be fast and painless and I can play Assassin's Creed too, as those were my two games I wanted this year.

I will try to exchange the game later before sending it back, and hopefully this is just an isolated incident, but it does have me worry.

I ended up grabbing this one.. One friend was trying to get me to grab the 360 version but I went PS3 on this one. So far the little I have played was great fun. NO regrets getting the PS3 version luckly. Glad this is not one of those terrible ports that we have all heard so much about.

HOpe to see some of you out there online. Be gentle..
Well I just finished two hours of single player.

First impressions:
 • smoothest console FPS I have played in a while. Though I have not played Halo 3 yet.
 • Graphics the most realistic I have ever saw in a game.
 • I probably was more sucked in by the R:FoM story, but the presentation of the story in this is very cinematic.
 • the action in this game is pretty hairy. not like every other fps where you can control the pacing of the game by just backing up on the 'rails'. When you are in a fire fight, it is 360 degrees of action, until area is cleared. No luring 1 or 2 enemies out at a time. Probably how as close to combat as you'll get on your couch.
 • No cover system like gears, or R6, but you need cover to survive.
 • Emphasis on distance fighting, as opposed to the close quartered point blank blasting. But that could just be me.
 • Based on my progress so far, I would say the game will likely take me 7 hours to complete.

Things that are new to me are:
 • 'run' button - click L3 to sprint, and you automatically come out of it, when you aim, or ease off. It really does feel like running, not gliding on ice.
 • emphasis on popping in and out of scope/x-hairs (though I think this is a cod trademark).
 • playing as part of a squad, as opposed to commanding it, flying solo, or flying solo under the impression of being on a team (ala halo/resistance).

Really my only annoyances so far:
 • I use the tactical button layout. I really would like R3 and L3 swapped. (quibbling, I know).
 • At times, it is not always obvious where to go next. This is likely to give it a sandboxy feel.
 • So much is going on while sqad leader is giving directions, sometimes, I miss my Q's. (welcome to war?)
 • I find myself missing the cover system. I used to hitting the cover button, as opposed to the manual duck and hide.
 • No lean button, so you must really expose yourself to shoot around a corner. This would have been a perfect use for the SIXAXIS.

Just to make sure I wasn't kidding myself, I popped in R:FoM (which I haven't had in for 2 months). It really made me appreciate the photo-realistic sense of the game, and the 60 fps... smooth as butter. I did notice slowdown once, but there were 20 guys on screen, and 2 grenades going off. One of my first thoughts is what have other devs been doing? How can this game look so much better than anything else I have played on the PS3 so far. (My 360 experience is somewhat limited.) I really wish Haze had pushed for 60fps, even if they had to tone down other things...

I always finish single player before playing online, so nothing on that yet. Pootie, did you try single player yet?

No buyers remorse here.

Anyways, hope this helps someone make a decision.

nice wrap up... since haze is delayed, I have no reason not to get this game... however I do want the limited edition version of stranglehold..... before its all gone.
But anyway, I'm defintely going to miss the cover system, Vegas, and Graw, even gears has gotten all of us spoiled.
now I'm excited...

Yeah, I saw that too. I already had to send it in because of a power issue, that actually has me somewhat concerned about buying the game.

Hey add me too. I'm getting this from amazon and the damn game hasn't shipped yet, but when I get I'll be online first thing. Blueweltall.

How about you add me? Anyways, this game is simply amazing. I'm level 27 and I average about a 2:1-3:1 kill ratio on my games. I use the standard MP5 too

Which button is the default trigger, the R1 or R2?

Cool I added you Pootie Thang and I'll add you too, whoknows if thats okay with you.

I think I also have you on my friend list on LIVE too, whoknows. I still need to get a Halo 3 game with you.

Can't wait to get the game.

just ordered it... after playing the single player demo on the PC, i couldn't stop playing it over and over. the detail and the gameplay is just too good to miss even though it is a 6+ hour game.

Question, does CoD4 have a tutorial or something near the beginning (to learn the game at first)? One reason I never got into the 2nd CoD was because I played a demo, they threw me into a big battle (not telling me anything) and I just couldn't survive (so I gave up).

Also, does the game have difficulty levels?

Thanks

On default mapping, r1 is shoot. on 'flipped' mapping, I think only thing that changes is r1, and r2 are changed. There is also lefty, and lefty flipped.

I know the r1 fire is a bone of contention amongst many people. But to me it makes sense. The r1 button is quicker to fire, as it has a digital feel. Firing a gun is really a digital action. What is the point of pulling the trigger 1/3 of the way? Gun is either fired or not.

Also on the ps3, the r/l 2 buttons are quite stiff, I would rather not use them as triggers. Plus their shape has my fingers slipping off easy. I prefer to use them for secondary and tertiary actoin. On the other (XB360) hand, I could never use the RB/LB for fire, as their 'hard' feel would give me RSI in five minutes, plus it is hard to hold a finger on them. On the 360, the trigger just makes sense.

I really wish the DS3 changed the triggger buttons to be a concave shape, from the convex shape.

Anyway R2 lovers will be satisfied with COD4. Sorry for getting OT.

There is a short tutorial. One of the cool things about the tutorial, is that it suggests a difficulty level for you (4 difficulty settings), based on your performance in the tutorial. Not sure if this has been done before, but I think it should be the new standard.

What squirrel said. It eases you in and once you're in your hooked. I sold Resistance to get this and so far I'd say it's been a good choice. And that's saying something because I really enjoyed Resistance. So far the only downside has been lack of co-op play.

On another note. Does anyone know if it's possible to fully invert controls? I see you can invert up/down, but I see nowhere to invert left/right. Any help?
Are you some sort of masochist, or do you play with with the controller upside down?

~S
I don't play that way, but my wife does. She does a lot of things backwards like that.

I actually added you last night on PSN ;)

I'll be playing a lot tonight, or at least I'm planning too.

Gotta comment on the online system. Very very well done.

I'll be online tonight guys.

Quick question:
I saw an option for split screen multi.
Is that local MP or two player online MP?

It's local MP. I wish it was online split-screen.

Awesome, so now that's 4 of us that has it?

We should all play online together. Fun time would be had by all.

I got the PS3 version also, add me guys.

Not to brag or anything, but I am a fucking beast at this game. Having already played the beta on the Xbox 360, I bought the PS3 version over the Xbox 360 anyways. I hopped online and guys were already like level 20+ and I was a level 1, and I was owning them with the M16 consecutively. My overall K/D ratio after playing for an hour or so last night is 266-95, and I'm only a level 12. Tell me that's not fucking greatness

I don't remember being able to invert the controls horizontally on any FPS I've ever played.

Oh well. Guess my wife'll have to learn to play normal.

Anyway, I'll probably be on later tonight too if anyone wants to add me.

dallow, whoknows,

Are you guys now playing single player? Just curious.

after first level:
Did anyone thing the execution cutscene was sweet. Seeing your reflection in the muzzle of the gun that executes you, was pretty dramatic. I definitely got the feeling that I was being executed.

Maybe I'll try MP tonight. What region are you guys in?

~S

Yeah, I have been playing single player and its amazing. But that part you are talking about was that just some random guy or do you find out who it is later?

EDIT: Im in mountain region (specifically CO)

Hehe, it's funny, because I was pretending as if I were a real person in that situation, so I watched him walk up to me, point then gun, then I looked away.

Hehe, I'll have to do it again.

I'm in central region, what time will you be on?
Doesn't matter what time for me. Unless Kid Nation is on.
Yep. I looked as hard as I could but there is no difference.
I saw some comparison videos somewhere else.. maybe PS3 fanboy had them linked from another site.. but I couldn't tell either. Only thing, during the Helicopter scene that was show, the PS3 version had more rain effects.

I am on the second stage with the american. I am guessing I am on the last stage of Act I.

I would guess that guy is just some random guy, and the NIS was a way for them roll the credits, and generate your dislike for the ultranationlists.

I am on Atlantic time. I'll likely be on around 10, so I'll send you and invite when I get on.

Game looks great. I'll definitely be picking it up as soon as I get some more money, or I find a deal on it.

Blah, I exchanged my copy of Call of Duty 4 for another at Best Buy and get the same results, it shutting down my system after a minute or two. Not sure what is up but I think I'm going to give up on the game now, and cut my losses. Sony is sending me a "coffin" but I'm not sure if I want to go that route since it's only this one game and Assassin's Creed comes out shortly followed by Haze and my current backlog of games I still need to finish.

Good luck to all those who can play it and have fun, since from the little bit I did actually get to play, itt was a damn fun game to play and I only hate it more now because I can't play it at all.

Damn! Amazon still haven't shipped my game yet. I'm probably just going to get the game this weekend and return the amazon copy. The wait is killing me!

As it should be. The game is amazing.

EDIT: Oh wait, that's not helping.

The game is crap, the longer it takes for you to get the longer you'll avoid disappointment :)

fuck, now I'm pissed. I hate you CoD4. Since I thought it was just the online MP I couldn't play, I decided to at least try and finish up the story mode. But now I can't, since this game has now brick my system. It's just my luck to be in the .3% of people who have this problem. Oh well at least a coffin is already being sent and should arrive next week. I really wanted to love this game, it was my Halo killer, now it's just a stuck disc in a dead PS3.

BTW, does anybody know the turnaround time for repairs or replacements?

I feel really sorry for you. No clue how long the turnaround time is, but I hope it doesn't take too long for your sake :whistle2:(
As long as it doesn't give me cancer, I should be fine.;)
Oh, I forgot to mention. It does.
You got it on That Triple RvB?
Yeah, my Live membership is coming up soon and I don't feel like paying $50 a year anymore because online isn't a priority for me but just an occassional thing. I figured I might as well go with PS3 cause online's free on it and also I've got my PS3 hooked up with HDMI (whereas I've got the dumbass launch 360 without HDMI output) so it'll look just that tiny bit better.

i wish there was a button to do the hold breath when using the scope instead of L3. disable one of the grenade triggers while zoomed in and use that instead.... that would be ideal.
