Coded Arms reviewed - Scores are mixed so far

I'm debating whether I should buy wait for this game or go buy Midnight Club 3: DUB or Dead to Rights: Reckoning. Someone help me decide!

Since most Dead to Rights games have been garbage, I'm not very confident in a PSP version being any better.

And IGN didn't like MC 3 that much, so take that as you will...

And apparently the Coded Arms firmware update is 1.51, not 1.50.

Since it can't be scanned in, I'll paraphrase it as best I can.

Good: Lot's of upgradeable weapons, randomized stages
Bad: Troublesome controls, grows tedious quickly

Apparently, it's a lot of fun at first, assuming you can deal with the troubling controls. The boss battles are pretty good but too few. The levels all follow the same pattern of kill some guys in a hallway, kill a lot of guys in a big room, go to the exit and/or with a time limit.

It seems that it has the same fault as almost every other randomly generated game. Things just can't stay interesting because although it is randomly generated it is randomly generated with very few things changed.

It is sort of disappointing because when I first saw PSP game pics, this is the one that looked the most interesting to me.
 
Hey, don't pass it over just because of the firmware update.

It only updates to version 1.50, and if you bought your PSP in the US you already have that version.

It will only update Japanese PSP systems.

PSP firmware 1.50 is the version that was recently cracked!

Yes, I did say recent. But the games you listed are no more recent than mine. Additionally, 007 titles have always had configurable controls. Metroid Prime 2 has several different control settings, as do Medal of Honor titles.

I only counts if you can assign the controls yourself, choosing between a few presets doesn't count.

COMPLETELY CONFIGURABLE controls are rare, and most games do not have it.
 
sigh... Ever get the impression that Sony is cutting off its nose to spite its face? I know they have little to no choice in the matter, but I think I'm going to wait until 1.5x is cracked to buy this game.

Definitely disappointing, as this was this probably the only PSP game coming out that I was interested in. :/
 
Well, they kinda don't want to get sued, and a few hundred people not buying games is pretty insiginificant conpared to a $300 milion dollar lawsuit from Sega and Nintendo.

Well then, Coded Arms doesn't count. "4 selectable control schemes" =/= "COMPLETELY CONFIGURABLE"

4 selectable control schemes AND custome button configuration, like Timesplitters.

Over at the 1up boards someone who rented Midnight Club 3 for the PSP made a thread that stated a race that takes about one minute to complete takes about two minute to load....

So proceed with caution if loading times aren't your thing...Allegedly...
 
Sorry that I'm going to sound like a Noob, but what's the deal with this "homebrew?" I've had my PSP since launch day, and I haven't heard about this before. Can someone please put me in the know?

None the less, the fact that a game released in this day and age does not have configurable controls is ridiculous.

It is not hard to implement, and it only stays unimplemented because companies are lazy.

Simply put, homebrew apps can only run on psp's ver 1.5 or lower, up dating to 1.51 or higher will kill your ability to play homebrewn app. As to what homebrewn apps are, they're simply custom made, un-licensed programs created by other people, the most prominant ones being emulators alowing you to play SNES, NES, Genessis and basically any old school system on your PSP.
 
Everyone not buying games so you can keep homebrew are going to be pretty dissapointed since Sony is going to be doing this to more and more games. Thats the reason Im not even going to bother with it. I bought my PSP to play PSP games and UMD movies personally. :D
 
I got the Asian version of Coded Arms. Its all in English, and the firmware update is 1.50(whew). The game is great, controls are configured to your liking but take some getting used to. But hey I went from Goldeneye controls to Halo and that wasnt a problem, so it shouldnt be with others. GET THIS GAME!

Few hundred? There are maybe a 'few hundred' here on CAG with a PSP with homebrew loaded on. Check out www.psphacks.com, they have thousand of members, and thats just registered. I could not even begin to estimate how many people have homebrew, but these forced updates will deter people from buying these games. I was going to buy Coded Arms, but now with the forced update, I choose not to. Id rather enjoy by 5 PSP games I currently own (I have owned almost the entire PSP libary, and I have have 5 left), and my 512MB card with hundreds of games/tv shows/movies.
 
But still, risk > benefit.

Especially since hackers are now abusing the PSPs homebrew capabilities to run ISO files ripped from UMDs. Coded Arms, Lumines, and a few other games are now available via free download to 40 year old virgins living in their mothers basement.

And...? The same is/has been available with the GBA for many years. It takes me 5 minutes to find a GBA rom, download, and dump on a flashcart. The same can be said for the PSP games, but so far only a few have been hacked, and they are not that great. I assume Sony will put more protection into future PSP games, so only there 30 or so games released so far will be at risk.

And whats the point about 40 year old virgins? They are not the only ones that downloaded homebrew/illegal games.

If Sony chooses to have firmware updates be mandatory, that thats fine, they can. However, there are many people who will NOT be buying there games at all. I would take a NES game over a PSP anyday. Look at Coded Arms, there are quite a few in this thread who will not be purchasing due to this, and I havn't visited GameFaqs yet, but I'm sure thats the case.
 
i've played the game for several hours now and am beginning to get used to the controls. The analog stick is just too sensitive though, so I'm moving with the d-pad and looking/aiming with the buttons. You can customize the buttons to "inverse" y axis by switching triangle and X buttons around.

Its kind of a clunky set up, but it does get the job done. I am actually surprised with how well it works as I was very skeptical when I first heard about the one analog nub so long ago.
 
Right there is no forced firmware update if you're using a 1.50 psp.

I really like the game. Reminds me of the old school fps games.
 
Just got it, I was pessimistic before I played it because I have played FPS games on LCD screens before and it wasn't pretty.

But I must say, the response rate is exceptional, there is almost no bleeding or blurring at all!

The levels look like your average PS2/Xbox FPS game, good polygon count, no jaggies.
Enemy AI (better than Doom 3, but it's no Half-Life) and character models are pretty good too.

The controls (using face buttons for movement or looking, depending on you controls) are hard to get used to, but thankfully you can configure every aspect of the controls.

I haven't gotten very far into the game, so I can't give a full rating, but I would rate the gameplay at about 8/10.


And on a side note, there is no annoying cutscenes or story, nothing to interrupt action at all!
 
ok anyone else got the game yet Im really undecided . Im almost about to beat kirbys canvas curse and need a new portable game for my psp.
