IT is not a bad degree. With any job, you have to earn your pay. This takes several years. You have to start at teh bottom and work your way up. Work for a big company that will invest in you, train you, and promote you. Get an A+, MCSE, or cisco certification.

Exactly what BigNick said. You have to earn your keep first and that can take a while. I started in IT a little over 2 years ago (well, at least professional IT). I was making a paltry $8.50 an hour. Currently, I'm at about $35K a year with benefits, and it will only go up from here.

I'w curious. Was this after a degree or not? I interned with getting my degree for 15/hr, and was offered 40/45,000 by multiple houses upon graduation.

No degree unfortunately. Left college for medical reasons and didn't get back (yet). Keep in mind that I am in a very poor area. The average income is under $20, and $50K a year would be considered affluent in these parts.

Darn. I wish I was there.
I mean around here, 50K a year is dead center middle class. Affluent doesn't even start to kick in until after you hit 6 figures.

I can understand that. You indicated before that you were in Detroit. I have a friend who lives there. He works at some video/media distribution company doing grunt work and manual labor. He told me how much he was making and I couldn't believe he got paid so much for the work he was doing. Yet he has trouble making ends meet due to the cost of living.
