Company making 2D games for PS2, XBox, and so forth

What do you guys think of a company that just solely makes 2D video games for systems other than GBA? Frankly, I would much rather play a 2D game on a TV screen.

I've always said that I wish someone would make an RPG game like.. 300 hours long.. make it great.. use 2D sprites and have a tttttooooonnnnnnn of space to work with in the story.. i'd love to see a new Final Fantasy 2D-ish game along the lines of Final Fantasy 2 (SNES).

gameboy player :)

Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage, MegaMan, Gunstar Heroes, Raiden, Metal Slug, Aero Wings, games like that. Not bashing Gameboy or anything. I liked Metal Gear Solid on Gameboy, Tetris, of course, I just like bright colors with my 2D games. And music, the music has to be hot.

You do know a Gunstar Heroes sequel and a Metal Slug 1 port are coming to GBA, right?

Yeah, I know. I'm really not a big fan of playing any type of handheld game except the Sega Nomad. Also, I know you can get a device to let you play a GBA on a TV, but maybe I just miss the fact that you wouldn't need all of that. Just the console and the game.

Hell yeah! I don't play GBA too much either......actually, I've NEVER played a GBA..but
I could dig on some HQ 2-d goodness.

There's still so much that can be done with 2-d graphics...just look at Guilty Gear. fucking amazing sprites on that bitch.

And there are plenty of 2-d genres that need resucitation-- vertical shooters, beat em ups, side scrolling shooters, 2-d fighters, sprite based RPGs (not S-RPGs, those are covered.) It's kinda sad that some of the best genres are on life support! Sure, we still have like one flagship title representing in each of those genres, metal slug, ikaruga, SF3, GG etc. but we need more. Sure, these types have been done to death, but modern design sensibilities can make us feel like we're playing the genre for the first time!

Imagine a full fledged 2-d production on a PS3, Revolution or 360...droooool

I'd much rather see a 300 hour RPG.. i want to see longer RPGs and if that means a cut in graphics so be it.. if anyone wants to.. we should have a RPG maker thread and start creating our own RPG for Cag (i'm not completely familiar with the title.. i just know you can get it for PC.. I also don't know how long you can make it or if you can import your own sprites and all that jazz but still.. it'd be fun)

Get Alien Hominid, Metal Slug 4 & 5, Gradius V, R-Type Final and Castle Shikigami 2 for the PS2, and you should be all set for quite some time.

heh.. I remember about a year ago, I spent sooooo much time playing with RPG Maker. But the games really never came out to be what I suspected, still fun though!

A 300 hour game? That's lunacy, I tell you. Perhaps I'm too old-school, but I'd rather have a short game that's fun enough to replay dozens of times rather than a biblically long game that I know I'd struggle to to finish once.

OMG I would kill for this, I would do absolutely ANYTHING to see a sequel to final fantasy IV using the majority of the same characters. :) Athough I doubt this would ever happen I guess I will have to deal with an 80 hour zelda instead

Especially if it's boring.

I never even finished FF2 because it was too long.

The better it is, the longer it can be.

I can't imagine a storyline that would keep you engaged for that many hours. It would have to focus a lot on long battles or something to keep it going that long. The only times I have spent more than 40 hours on an RPG are when there is some sort of mastery involved (like in FFT with getting all abilities for my main character) or in an MMORPG. In both of those cases, I was just playing it for fun and not for the experience (like I do with most of the regular RPGs).

I find 20 hr games more than long enough, its pretty rare that i'll finish a game that long or even pick it up in the first place. I dont need to waste 5-10 hrs before a game gets interesting, i'd rather just play something enjoyable right away
I love 2D games! Would I pay $50 for one? Probably not.
I payed $65 for Yoshis Island for the SNES, and then some dumbass stole it.

yeah after playing with it.. i can't do what i want to do.. o well.. it was fun though.. good luck on making some new 2D games.. i'd like to see them hit the 9.99-14.99 price point. i'd pay for it.

300 hours. that would be quite the undertaking....perhaps a designer dream team could pull it off. it would have to be innovative in every way possible, especially the story. None of this "pseudo-spiritual/scientific coming of age love story in which the demons have acquired the darkstone of power and you must stop them from blowing up the world" crap. and the gameplay would have to change throughout the whole time, since no regular static turn based system can keep anyone's interest for 300 hours. Maybe someone will do it one day.

most of those are old except Alien Hominid, which is pretty awesome btw. those are good 2-d shooters, but we get like 2 of those a year. I want more! :)

BRACE YOURSELF: ALBINONINJA HAS A GAME IDEA!!!

holy crap, i can't even finish a +20 hour game, what do you expect people like me to do!?!

i would consider this if the game was broken up into a lot of small rpgs: for example-

You start off with a normal guy discovering a sword which allows him to use magic (magic would be common in the world, but only with the "noble class") He then becomes a knight and, using the sword he rescues a princess (or something cliche) and in the end is given a squire to teach.

Take over 20 years later as the squire, now an impressively wise and powerful knight. He also becomes very rebellious, and looks pretty damn badass. He leads a one-man rebellion and overthrows a powerful empire, becoming king.

Empire's in disarray and a young group of rebels defeat the "Dark Prince," but cannot destroy the sword. The plunge it into the sea where it is found by...

A samurai! The cursed sword is passed through dozens of ancient cultures and progresses into modern day and the future, where it is finally decided to be thrown into a black hole. Black hole becomes posessed by sword in the final final FINAL SHOWDOWN! When you defeat the final boss, the black hole reappears and brings the ship into the past: where you play as the swords creator, basically get your ass killed and is given a choice: plunge into darkness? If you do so, you kick some ass, but then you discover that you just started the sequence of events that would lead to the destruction of thousands. If you decide not to, the maker dies and you revisit every location, but its all peaceful and nice.

Yes, it would be full of rpg cliche's, but that would be part of the genius: everything would be intertwined. Plus, since the game constantly starts all over with fresh new characters and gameplay mechanics, it doesn't get stale. Also, you can stop for a few months, and as long as you still have the general gist of things, you won't have to start all over.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I'm waiting for some imageshack pics to upload and had to burn some time

ooo! ooo! for a little more replay value, how about the ability to play through the entire game as any character with a level cap of like a billion!
