In any other post PAD is bitching about any sort of social program and how the rich do not have any sort of obligation toward wealth distribution. Now he is bitching about how we aren't getting any help from the world ? If we are supposed to be a world leader and don't owe anything to anyone, why are we in need of a handout?

Ummm........ since when isn't india a third world country? Close to half of indias young children are malnourished. Many parts of india are extremely poor.

Though didn't venezuela offer to send rescue workers? And I did hear talk from europe, but, again, we have the money to fix it ourselves, something the countries hit by the tsunami do not have (not that we gave them what was pledged anyway)
 
Venezuela pleged to sned food and feul, nothing has happened yet on that, but it's only been two days. Besides that I've heard nothing except some aid organizations like Red Cross in Canada recieving donations and sending some workers, and the fact that people are so quick to what looks like support the lack of actions taken by other countries amkes me a little disgusted. You can even criticize the government all you want, but the US in general sends millions in private aid to other countries at well. The question of where our allies and people we've helped in the past are is a soild one IMO. Talk about 3rd world countries til you're blue, but why hasn't a country like England sent any aid workers or even declared to do so yet? Countries like Germany sit around yapping about how oil will go up now and the cost of insurence, but don't seem to want help out much. Like a half dozen EU countries sent firefighters out to battle forest fires a couple weeks ago, yet nothing after hurricane Katrina.

It's not even really about who should be our firend and ally or what counrty is more developed, aid work is supposed to about helping other people in times of crisis. Even if a country like India is poor they have rescue workers and equipment there. They can send say 8 workers and a couple boats to help out, but alas there's nothing. If everyone just decides to sit around and say "they can handle it themselves" it defeats the whole purpose of sending aid anywhere.

VIENNA, Austria -- From papal prayers to telegrams from China, the world reacted with an outpouring of compassion Wednesday for the American victims of Hurricane Katrina, even moved to offer aid at the sight of what nature could do to a wealthy and powerful country.

Throughout Europe, concerned citizens were keeping a close eye on events as they lamented the loss of life and the damage caused to New Orleans, often described as one of the North America's most "European" cities.

French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sent messages of sympathy to U.S. President George W. Bush. Chirac, who has famously quarreled with Bush over the Iraq war, addressed his letter, "Dear George."

When I checked the news sites this afternoon, at three, they had no mention of support, sympathy, anything. So I posted that the lack of it was disconcerting. When I found an article, I retracted my statement and posted it.

When I realized my statement was incorrect, I retracted it. When I informed you that your statement was incorrect, you forged ahead like a rhino that couldn't slow his momentum.

Who cares about what foreign governments are doing? The United States government has done jack shit, and it's absolutely disgusting.

I don't consider that to be true at all. He will always have the opportunity to edit his original post to include the 53 countries offering aid, including the $5 million offered by the Chinese government (which, IIRC, was 33% of our initial government aid offer after the southeast asian tsunami - you know, right before the UN all but said our government was "stingy").

It's up to PAD to edit that post, however, and regrettably, I won't be holding my breath.

North Korea's Red Cross Society sent a message of sympathy to the hurricane-ravaged United States on Saturday, in a rare gesture toward a country the communist state has called "evil" led by a "political imbecile."

The reclusive North is involved a long-standing nuclear crisis with the United States and claims that aggressive U.S. intent has forced it to build nuclear weapons.

"In the message, the society expressed sympathy with the USA Red Cross in connection with the great disaster suffered by those areas due to the hurricane," the North's official KCNA news agency said.

"(The Red Cross Society) hoped that they would recover from it and the living of the inhabitants in the afflicted areas return to normal as early as possible," KCNA said referring to the message.

There was no mention of an offer of recovery assistance.

The same North Korean mouthpiece agency criticized the United States on Saturday for naming a special envoy last month to address the human rights condition in the North.

"The U.S. is the world's worst human rights abuser," KCNA said, adding that Washington was engaged in "terrorism to spread the American style 'freedom and democracy' under the pretext of combating terrorism."
