Concerning iPod

I am planning on getting a 4 GB iPod Nano for Christmas and I was wondering, when putting music onto the iPod, does the music have to be downloaded from iTunes or can I just use the music I may download for free from something else such as Limewire?

I'd strongly recommend a Sandisk player over the Nano. They are cheaper and don't have the limitations regarding how you can move your music around.
