CAGiversary!

Well, it's once again time for my monthly project advice request from the CAG Crew.

Not only have I saved money and gotten in on cheap deals, but CAG advice has helped me.

-Loose 15 lbs, going from size 33-30 waist
-Help with my Tsunami Relief Project -Special thanks to CheapyD and MightySlacker
-and help with info for building a new computer.

Now I would like to get some input and advice for a Student Organization which I will be forming.

Essentially Im looking to have a organization for students that can meet once a week or biweekly and get together for events in a non-alcohol/drug enviornment.

Clubs and parties here have become very stale and redundant.

I already have all the necessary paper work and resources for the requirements.
--------------------------------------------------

What I want to get advice for:

Organization name

A good theme/purpose/statement to discribe the group and cause.

Things to do each week. (Ex bowling night) For both sexes, don't want a sausage party.

If things turn out well, we will be getting some funding, and at the least will enjoy going out and having part of the cost covered ;)

I already have a good number of people that will join, I just need to get a few things firm and finalized. Thanks already for the advice that's been coming in. It's been really helpful.

As of now there are over 700 organizations, and nothing similar to this. And when Pumbaa of CAG OTT fame, gets back here, he better join ;)
-------------------------------------------------------

For whoever comes up with a good name and organization statement will receive their choice of one of the following CAG items ;)

1.Psi Ops Ps2 Sealed
2.Astro Boy PS2 (Complete like new)
3.Nintendo brand Gameboy Advance Leather-like Zipper Wallet, 9x5 can hold system and several games. (New)

4.Dead or Alive ultimate Strategy Guide
5.Smackdown vs Raw Strategy Guide
6.A Mystery Box, could be anything. It could even be a boat!

I will most likly make a choice sometime around monday evening after RAW. Yes the prizes are not special, except #6. But its practically free, and ill cover shipping of course.

I believe the name is self-explanatory. ;)
This may have to be a side project :lol:

The name should emphisize the lack of booze and drugs, like sober night out. When you apply for school funds make sure you emphize the fact that anyone can join and how it is an alternative to drinking parties, I'm sure you already knew that but colleges love programs like that, especially if you get a large enough group together.

You might also want to look into things like lazer tag and minature golf and if it's possible to rent a school projection system for movie night.

Since you've got good sense of humor, I'll try to come up with a more serious response...

Go with a hobby or activity you are into. Failing that, do some kind of community service such as helping inner city children or illiterate adults.

I am adding all 3 of those to the list. Thanks!

I don't know what kind of college you're at, but usually there are a variety of programs like this already out there. Everything from dorms hosting their own events, to religious organizations, etc. You'll have to be pretty creative. Bowling is fun, but every club does that. Try something like a talent show one week (have a local restaurant sponsor it with a free gift card). The next week do something like a mock Apprentice show, where maybe you get some local business people to do the interviews and the person they choose wins something. A bit goofy, but also very original and would give reason for your club beyond the other avenues I mentioned.

Best of luck with it.

My response, and then some more information on our situation.

-however noted, I will try to throw in some community service now and then, in the mix ;)

One of the groups that I am sorta working with is the homeless council here.

homelesscouncil.org

I have been helping out with them for almost half a year now.

I help out most Fridays between 6-7ish. What I would hope for is to have the weekly event from this new organization to be on some friday evenings, therefore opening the door for those that may want to help out at the homeless council too.

And in turn also have those who want to go out at the homeless council join us.

The homeless council, is church backed, and further gives virtually all money - through food, shelter, etc to helping the homeless. The university of Florida wants their funding to go to the students, so we have to keep our groups seperate :(.

Also they are heavilly church influenced, and I don't want to mix religion in with this group.

I checked, we have over 700 student organizations, and nothing similar. The closest is Healthy Gator. Which are students for exercize, etc.

The point isn't that there may already be such a club, but that other clubs are doing the same thing--just not advertising it. Note the two examples I gave you. With over 700 clubs, some of them are surely proving drug-free activities, even if that's not the real purpose. To make yours stand out, you will need something very creative, because likely most students are already affiliated with one club or more.

As far as getting accepted, im pretty sure the clean-enviornment will carry over pretty well.

For activities, and creative events to attract members, im hoping to get a whole list of suggestions here, and then talk it out with the people that I have chosen for treasurer and faculty advisor.

I will definetely try to have some good creative events for the people

Is there anyone named Homer at your campus? If not, then I would have to recommend the revival of the classic No Homers - then make Homer Simpson your mascot (no HomerS - you can have one) - that club did a lot of various fun activities in general, and you could include some watching of Simpson episodes on the occasional Sunday night so people can bring up how much the new episodes have gone downhill since season 4.

how about a video gaming club. you can call it the VGA club. or maybe even video gaming anynomous.

you guys would host video game tournaments on school, maybe collect and donate old games and systems to needing after school programs, maybe help re-paint an old arcade around town. you know stuf like that.

Well what kind of organization are you trying to make here? I'm President of a management organization, but I'm assuming that you're shooting for something that is a bit more of a social group, no? Or do you want a group that is academic oriented and does social things? I'm sure I could come up with something :whistle2:k

The Straight-Edge Society

An organization where students gather in an environment free of alcohol and drugs. Planned events including trips, sports outings, picnics and/or barbeques as well as chartiable work and efforts to improve our campus.

Some events that could work:
* Bowling
* Mini-golf
* Movies
* Concerts **
* Professional Sports **
* Dinners (at local restaurants, esp. those without liquor licenses)
* Picnics
* Barbeques

You could also have a presence at other campus events (i.e. games, charity events, etc.)

** - especially if you can get group seating in the non-alcohol designated areas

i use to be straight edge, but there are different types. some dont have sex, drink or do drugs. but by straight-edge you mean only when u are in the club or only for straight edgers?

Diogenese Club

You can sit around and not say a word for 2 hours and everyone do their own thing, but they must not look at anyone else or make a noise. The winner will get to leave early.

Whatever you decide it must have a catchy name. Maybe throw some engrish into it.
Super Happy Power Fun CLub of Crazy Winner! That will get people interested.

Good luck with it

Some? Your not sXe if you drink or do drugs. What crazy druggie sXers did you hang out with? Or has it become weak nowadays :(

i mean some say drinking not to get drunk is okay, some say you cant indulge in any form of sexual activities with anyone. some say just intercourse.

I started a club when I was at USF (South Florida) and I am doing the same thing now as a grad student at FSU. Its really easy and you can put the interest as anything. All these Florida schools have lots of money to blow on clubs (ive seen this being a member of student government at both schools).

Keep the ideas coming, ill choose a winner at 2 am est.

SXE doesnt work, and has more restrictions. I dont want to exclude people who drink or do drugs etc. I want this to be for people who don't do either, or people who may, but just want to go out on some nights without it. Thanks for the input though.

what about a central activities network sort of thing? weekly meetings to discuss local happenings - sporting events, comedic performances, concerts, movies, etc and to plan trips to such things - to go to at least one of those or something similar a month, hold fundraisers and promotional events to earn any extra necessary funding for them (or to give to charity) that also will get your group out in the limelight and known to build membership. I wouldn't be able to think of a name though - I'm just not good at those - hell, I can't even name my pet praying mantises, and I have 9 of them.

EDIT- actually you may as well as call it the Central Activities Network (or Club, if its preferred), gosh I can be stupid - that option was right in front of me and I nearly missed it.

i use to know i guy who started an anime club, everyon chips in and youd buy anime and watch a new one ever week or so. Just give it some freaky name like the "Ani-club", or some freaky japanese name.

Speaking of anime, i was watching ai yori aishi and they have a photography club. They take pictures of girls of course but i'm sure you could find other things to take pictures of. you can even hire models. simply call it the Photography club.

The UTMOST

The University's Top Movement Oriented Student Team

And your group could be focused on getting people to go out and get active outside the dorms and their apartments in various things such as frisbee football, soccer, bowling, basketball, HORSESHOES, etc... and once a month you could all get together and try and earn money to give away to the Horses of America!
hmm its between the horse and visc.. you guys wanna tiebreaker this?
Visc. Nice and Simple.

I think it was Jack Black of the great Tenacious D who said it best:

"I win 1-0!" :mrgreen:

Now do I go for Psi Ops, or The Mystery Box....would you mind letting me know if said box is in fact game related before I choose?

Oh, and thank you DT for the vote of confidence :D

"Get the mystery box. It could be anything, it could even be a boat."

Suffice to say, my years of watching Lets Make a Deal on tv growing up is not helping me in the slightest here.

you should start an IM kickball league... everyone will join, everyone loves kickball because anyone can play it... i have your slogan too "YOUR SCHOOL HERE IM KICK BALL LEAGUE 'KICKIN BALLS SINCE 2005'"

*A hike could be a good daytime activity.
*If you can get some 'experts' to help a rock climbing excursion could be really cool. It's something that most people would feel they could never do, so you get a great feeling of accomplishment. Or you could go to a rock climbing gym and use their experts.
*Anything with free food will probably be popular. Like if you do a movie screening and provide decent snacks.
*Pizza making night. Provide the materials - crusts, sauce, toppings, cheese - and let the people create their own masterpieces.

And then the usual stuff at night can work. Dancing at a club (although they all pretty much have alcohol unless they are under 21 only and then you'd be excluding any students over 21...) pool, bowling, stuff that has already been mentioned basically.
