Convinced PS2's are made to break.

i bought my ps2 when metal gear solid came out, the system was still 300 bucks back then, dont remember exact date but it saw moderate to light use until recently and i've had some disc read errors already, really annoying especially since i didnt even use it that much. I didnt even have a second controller for it until the last few months! sometimes when it doesnt read a disc if i flip the system up vertically it magically reads it, just like how i had to flip my launch playstation upside down sometimes, so freaking annoying.

another thing i'm just noticing is how loud the fan is, i dont know if its gotten louder or if i'm just more sensitive to it now but i actually have to turn up the volume on my tv because the system is so loud. anyone else notice the fan thing?

Never had a problem with my old PS2, but traded up for the new PSTwo when it was released. No problems with that either. The only systems I have had problems with are:

Xbox (Sometimes tells me my discs are dirty, even though they are in perfect condition )

N64 (I've never blown into the system or games, but it has began crapping out on me!)

And well, my SNES also got the yellowing effect on the top shell of it, but it works perfectly fine. I think that may be due to smoking in the house. My parents used to smoke, and that is the only explanation I can think of to cause the yellowing.
I think the yellowing is just due to a poor grade of plastic, it seems to happen randomly.
I've heard this as well, but I think maybe smoking could have helped the effect? At any rate, it doesn't really affect gameplay, it just makes your SNES look even uglier!

No problems with my PS2 that I bought in '02. It's been on the carpet from time to time, turned completely off, unplugged, and left on standby. The only problem I've had with the original Playstation is my roommate dropped it on concrete. Busted. But my GCN I bought in '03 gives me DREs like crazy when I play Eternal Darkness, and from time to time on others.
Does Eternal Darkness work on other systems? That's the first time I've ever heard of a DRE on the Cube.
Here's a thread about Cube DREs.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42445

My ED is like 2 weeks old. It's not been on any other system. It only happens during cut scenes. I turn it off, turn it back on, and it usually goes through the scene. And it does happen on other games, just not as frequent.
I recall hearing about a random glitch in the Eternal Darkness cutscenes. So, I'd suggest trying it on a friends' Cube except you say it happens with other games... You should probably still try it. You may have gotten a defective disc, maybe?

Edit: Or, after reading that thread, it sounds like GCN DREs are due to dirty machines/discs. In that case, any console (including cartridge) can get "DRE"s, meaning people need to clean them. I guess I always associate DRE with the PS2 and XBOX drives just breaking on you.
Probably just needs cleaning, yes. Just haven't taken the time, but I might soon. But I beat ED, so I may not play it again soon to test it out. And it happens so infrequently on other games, that it could be six months down the road before it happens again. Now that I've said my PS2 has played well, it'll probably crap out on me soon.

I've had my PS2 since launch day and I've never had a single problem with it. Oh, and about the standby mode causing problems? Mine has been on standby for over 4 years now so I don't think that is an issue.

I hope not. But that would seem to be the tradition...

i saw on x-play that they tested each system through 3 tests the frist dropped from a ladder the ps2 brok and the xbox and gamecube still worked anther time they hit them with a hammer and the third time i dont remember but any ways the gamecube is actually the strongest system

I bought my PS2 at launch and only about a week ago did I have to send it in to SONY for my free repair.

I do, however, also need new controllers.

For every person here who's had a launch PS2 beak down recently I'd suspect there are a great deal more who havent yet. Sometimes it just seems worse when you stand in the middle of the problem looking out.

Mines was probably one of those broken ones, I bought it off ebay Refurbished. Works like a charm. Hasn't been any problems after like 220 hours of gameplay. Hopefully it'll last me at least 250 hours more.

I've had to go through 3 PS2s, and 2 xboxes (make that 3, since my current one is sorta on the fritz.). On the flip side, my NGC has been through hell and back, but still works perfectly. Though the frequent pauses during the cutscenes in RE4 are starting to freak me out.

Strangly My GC has never had a problem at all untll RE4, the first day I put it in, the opening cut scene would load and I'd hear the clicing sound that reminded me of the PS2 when it had the DRE problem. It would play the cinema but there would be no sound. I got scared grabbed my compress air can and blew som dust off the top of it and blew some air in the vent on the side, turned it back on and it played the scene without a problem... though I might have heard a click ot two... not sure but it's playing fine so far.

I bought a GC and PS2, and neither have had DRE or any other problems. I traded up for the PSTwo just in case though. I have an Xbox, and it has sucked since I purchased it. I get dirty dics messages; newer games have troubles with these. It also sounds pretty terrible during play. I don't think any system is made to break though...

I have had to place my ps2 vertically because It no longer plays discs when placed horizontally(DRE). I can't send it into sony for DRE because I opened it up myself. I thought it's supposed to be worse when it's Vertical???
