Cooking Mama: Cook Off - Gen. Discussion & Info

Got it. The kids are having a tough time with the controls, which can be kind of finicky in places (e.g. slicing) and dull in others (e.g. stirring). Hopefully everybody gets it down. I think everyone's excited through because there's always the promise of opening more recipes.

While we were playing, my niece asked me "What's custard?" and before I could answer her older brother said, "Rotten ice cream." Fair enough.

i had this preordered at eb, but then didnt' get it yesterday. but walmart had it in stock yesterday. i assume eb got it today. i think they tried to call me, but i kept missing the call.

gonintendo posted some initial thoughts on the game. after reading ign's review, i was thinking of not getting it. but since 1up and gonintendo posted some stuff. i think i might just pick this up anyways.

I only played the DS version as a loaner, but right now the stylus is definitely the easier of the two control schemes to pick up and interact with the game. I say "right now" as maybe the Wii controls will grow on me. I'm having difficulty getting things to go just as I like (peeling can be a pain in the ass), and the rest of the family is basically waving the controller around in hopes that something good happens. We'll get the hang of it eventually.

I think that the only reason to get this game is 1) if you enjoy Cooking Mama for the DS and 2) you want a multiplayer experience. If only #1 is true for you, stick to the DS version. If only #2 is true, stick with Wii Sports, Wario Ware, or hold out for another MP game.

It's definitely not a $50 title by any means. I'm okay blowing the money, though, because it fits the specific interests of my family and their MP tastes. Generally speaking, though, it's a ripoff at fifty bucks.
Where'd you find it?
Got it at a local Best Buy last night. They had a ton of them out.

I rented it, and thought it was actually pretty decent. My wife loves the DS version, though, and she likes the DS version more because she had some problems with the controls on the Wii. Eventually, she got it, but at the end, I think she did like the DS version more. I liked the Wii version more, though I had a bit of problem with some of the controls too.

Overall, I am sure I'll pick it up when it hits $30. $50 is just way, WAY too much.

i rented it. def not worth 50 bucks. i played it with my gf for like an hour. it got kinda repetitive. i liked wario ware better too.

Exactly what I did... thats crazy.

But the only thing different is, I enjoyed it very much.

And it was really fun playing with your GF.

No kidding, I don't get the pricing. This seems like a perfect budget-priced game that could have done decent sales in this otherwise slow period for the Wii. It should have been no more than $30, and even as low as $20. I'm sure they'd make way more money at either of those price points than they will at $50. I may rent this if Blockbuster gets it. But I haven't played the DS version either (though I do have it). My wife played it for 1/2 hour and said she won it. I think she completed the first rice recipe . But that was big news as it was the first time I was ever able to get her to try the DS.

 Blockbuster (at least mine, so I'm sure most stores) does have this game, along with most of the other recent releases.

Haha, that reminds me of the time when I was 5 years old and FINALLY beat level 1-1 of Super Mario Brothers, and thought that I had beaten the game.

I actually started Cooking Mama for the DS over the weekend. I've probably put 10 hours into it and I'm only about halfway done. (I don't move on until I get a gold medal)

OK, having played it more last night (yep, rented it again for the night since some friends were coming over), I can honestly say that it is a lot of fun as a party type game. In fact, we played it non-stop for almost 3 hours. At this point, my wife who is a DS Cooking Mama fanatic, says she feels the Wii version is in fact superior.

Having said that...STILL not worth $50. Once it hits $30 or $20, though...8)

I would agree with this in its entirety. The controls work fine (I haven't done every action yet, but other than peeling having a trick to it, much like it does in the DS version, haven't had any issues). The vs. CPU mode is fine, just adds a bit more tension above the ticking clock.

Summary: It's not an awesome game by any means, especially not at a $50 price tag, but it's well worth a rental, and if you thought the DS game was worth owning, this will be more so once it gets down to a reasonable price.

Picked this up today.
I didn't pay $50 though, fuck that.
I bought Far Cry for $16.. my BF bought Open Season for $16. We took them to GS and got this game.

This game is pretty good..for the $16 I paid for :)

It def should have been released at no more then $30!

I was considering buying this with my last set of 2-for-1 GS games, but I went with Godfather instead. Although I love Cooking Mama DS, I'm just not sure about this. I plan on giving it a rental.

Wow. I rented this because I've heard good things about the DS and this one.

It definitely isn't my type of game. I was bored after doing just a few receipes. Tried the other modes, and just wasn't a fan.

The multiplayer might help it a bit, but I'm definitely not picking this game up. I would probably only consider it at $15 or less.

Exactly. For the $16 I paid for, it IS worth it. If you have someone to play with, then it's worth say.. $20ish. I have someone to play with, so it's a pretty good game.. for what I paid of course :)

LMFAO, Mama sounds soo much like Ms Swan it's hillarious.

Mama really is a mix of things..from Ms Swan to the extreme EXTREME stereotype of asian american.

"WONDERFUR! BETTER ZAN MAMA!"
Mama has a voice? Hahaha. I have to hear it.
yes! It's REALLY cliche!

bump. played this at my sister's place with my nephew and niece. perfect example of how Wii controls can backfire horribly.

I bought the Cooking Mama Cookoff for the Wii, soon after I got my Wii. I thought it was very boring, same thing over and over. I thought should have been a little more detailed. I understand it's a cooking game, but I thought it would have been more than what it is. I am not real impressed with the Wii version at all. It will probably get sold or traded soon!
Hopefully the DS version will be better, or it will defintitely deserve to be a budget title.

Everybody is very, very right about this one. It is a waste of money. Even at $30 it's a waste. The folks in my clan who'd be most interested in this are frustrated by both the controls and the pacing. As a result of these and many other factors, it's not a fun game.

I guess my desire for actual Wii games made me stupid enough to shell out $50. I just wanted something that everyone could play and enjoy. Bwah, I got ripped off!

Never again. It's only RE4 at release and Mario Galaxy at release. Everything else can wait.

Hey gang!
So, does anyone know if the Wii's "Cooking Mama: Cook Off" is a direct port of the DS's "Cooking Mama", or does it have different features/recipes/etc.?

I'm thinking about buying it for my wife as a surprise Valentine's present, but we already own the DS version. I'm just wondering if it's worth getting since we already have the DS version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million in advance!

It is different and is in no way as entertaining as its DS counterpart. The controls are shit.

EDIT: Which is to say if you have the DS version, you have the best of it.

It's totally different and totally entertaining in a distinct way. Opinions are definitely split on this, but my wife and I enjoy the Wii version probably more than the DS version. Both are little more than variations on four or five different motions, and the Wii gets us more involved. Neither of us have ever understood the camp that thinks the controls are terrible; we've yet to have a single issue with the controls when we follow the instructions.

The Wii version controls are "terrible" in that they are more difficult to apply accurately than those of the DS version. The fact that the instructions tell you what to do doesn't excuse poor control. They just aren't as accessible as they are on the DS.

I'm not saying that CM shouldn't reward people who read the instructions and take the time to learn the specific paths that CM requires for the motion to register every time. I think a title like this should respond well to PnP, especially given the presence of motion contol. My oldest kid would stir when it said stir, cut when she was supposed to cut, etc., and the motions rarely registered (or they'd half respond). I can see requiring tougher/more precise control on the harder recipes, but on the elementary stuff stirring shouldn't be as tricky as it is.

I wasn't trying to call you out for not reading the instructions or something. I genuinely believe that there is some muscle instinct that the designers must have had that is only mirrored in a portion of the population. Your argument is totally valid for some people, and I don't want to discount that. Unfortunately, it seems like the only way to find out if the controls work for you is to try them yourself.

No, I didn't take your post as a slight.

IMO for a game that is clearly aimed at a large spectrum of gamers, it's a bad idea to base the ease of game control on "muscle instinct" that's possessed by a very small portion of your target audience. I can see ramping up the difficulty in control as the game wears on, but gamers of any age should be able to have the controls work right out of the box if they're more or less aping the required motion. CM's controls like to catch arbitrarily. I made it sound like just my kid had problems but I had problems too. Eventually I started to catch on, but the game just wasn't as much fun at that point. The DS is better suited to the title IMO.
Unfortunately, it seems like the only way to find out if the controls work for you is to try them yourself.
And for that reason the game is, at best, a rental. It's not a valentine IMO.

You're in the minority here, dothog.
Most likely. I guess I'm holding the Wii version against the DS version, in which case the controls lack. On its own I suppose it's as responsive as most of the Wii library.
