Corzine (D) wins New Jersey! Kaine (D) wins Virginia!

CAGiversary!
Corzine was a shoe-in, but I'm impressed that Kaine beat Kilgore. Guess Dubya's gamble with a last-minute campaign "boost" for Kilgore flopped. Let's hope this trend continues next year!

Democrats swept both governors' races Tuesday, with Sen. Jon Corzine (news, bio, voting record) easily winning New Jersey and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine taking Virginia despite a last-minute campaign push for his opponent from President Bush.

Though I'm not surprised by this:

In Texas, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage, while Republican Mayor Mike Bloomberg surged ahead in his bid for a second term in heavily Democratic New York.

NJ, no big surprise.

Virginia's governor for the past 25 years has been the political opposite of whomever has been in the White House.

I'm not shocked by either.

Along with Texas, another ass-backwards state votes on a right-wing proposition:

Kansas State Board Votes to Teach Intelligent Design in Schools
Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The Kansas State Board of Education approved a proposal to teach intelligent design along with evolution as a scientific explanation of how life began.

The board voted 6 to 4 in favor of the guidelines, which say schools should teach that doubt exists about the validity of evolution, a theory that originated with British biologist Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century.
Oh, and don't forget. A Republican is still mayor of NYC despite 80% of voters being Democrats.
That's something I've never figured out ever since Guiliani was in there.

This news boggles my mind. I literally cannot wrap my head around the concept that people can be so mother-f*cking stupid. I mean, I know it's the south we're talking about here, but c'mon!

... *sigh*

Well, if we're going back to pre-enlightenment days, then perhaps we can stop and take a detour to those delightful little victorian-era styles our ancestors used to know and love.

Put those hee-haws in something other than NASCAR shirts, like a frilly powdered wig.

If you actually look at the reasons they support him, it's because they do not view him as a republican. He transcends his party. Someone in the mold of mitt romney, in charge of a heavily liberal area and readily connects himself with the republican party, would have a harder time.

I don't have a problem with RINO's on social issues. I'm not one to vote on abortion, gay marriage stances, intelligent design etc. If you're going to take a hard line with spending (Which no one does anymore regardless of party.), illegal immigration, law & order issues and defence I'll vote for you. Yes, even if you're pro-choice, for gay marriage or anything else. Those are far more Libertarian issues to me than Conservative issues.

The same "bellweather" claims will be made next year if Ed Rendell wins re-election in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately that's also an incredibly poor political barometer as Pennsylvania through my lifetime has given the D's two terms then they give the R's two terms. As much as I despise Rendell I don't think he's going to lose given this state's political history.

haha, Dover Pa lost their push of it, now you guys look like real idiots, haha, jk

As Nelson Muntz would say...

"Ha Ha!"

The Dover, PA BOE didn't loose their court case, they lost their jobs, which really is better.

Bloomberg, after being a life long democrat entered the race for NYC mayor as it's only republican (there were 3 Democrats already running). Mark Green had it in the bag until a last minute racial comment that Freddy Ferrer picked up and ran with sinking both of them. I have some major disagreements with Bloomberg (banning smoking in bars, raising property taxes by 18%) but all in all he's not too bad and less dick-ish then the previous administration.

But then again, I live in New Jersey. I see Corzine all the time (he lives in Hoboken) I will give him a high five next time I see him at the corner deli.

I was pissed that I forgot to do absentee ballot as I'm in college, but am greatly releaved Kaine won.

As for Kansas...Weren't they the state that also voted to alter the famous painting of George Washington Crossing the Potmac River because the pocket watch on his leg looked like his "hoo-hoo-dilly?" So they went through all the textbooks and scratched them out w/ pens.

Agreed. I HATE that smoking ban, and I don't even smoke, though I'm thinking of taking it up just to "smirt." Who really needs a reasonable lung capacity when I'm guaranteed an opening line with girls? I've yet to find the "perfect" politician for my tastes, but Bloomberg is taking pretty good care of NYC overall.

What confuses me is why the NJ race was constantly touted as "neck and neck" when Corzine won by, what, 11%?

Because he had a like 30 million dollar campaign budget

That's why here in Jersey you can smoke in a goddamn cancer ward, we ain't cowards, c'mon, come get me lung cancer, I DARES YA! My real problem with the smoking ban was they didn't give business owners a choice. They could have set up a deal where a certain % of bars had to be non smoking or some such giving patrons and employees (who the law was supposedly about) who didn't want to go to a smoke filled club a place to go.

The liberal media.
He can announce, he won't win.

I doubt Fast Eddie Spendell has Presidential ambitions.
Govenors are the most likely to win presidency in my opinion, it also has some statistical backing. All he really needs is a good running mate from the South who has more pull than Edwards who lost his own state.

Virginia in the hizzie.

Kaine won by lots, but the Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor and AG both lost. Okay, recount for the AG, but still - any thoughts as to why this happened? The Repub AG candidate was far more right-wing than Kilgore - he went to Pat Robertson's school (Liberty, right?) to get his law degree, and even took a campaign donation from Robertson. I'm psyched.
THANK GOD KAINE WON!

If you know anything about Virginia politics, you would know we would have been fucked if Kilgore won.
We were fucked either way. Both were incredibly poor candidates, not counting Potts who was also incredibly poor. Kind of a little flashback to November 2004 on the national level. Get ready for Kaine's tax increase come January

I live in dirty Jersey and all I can say is with Corzine is higher taxes and more corruption, not like Forrester was any better.

It's pretty clear to me, from personal experience and from the way things are going that Texas is one of the most intensely anti-intellectual places in the entire world - the actually pride themselves on being fucking stupid.

Apparently Kanasas is following suit.
