Hello all,
I think i may either have a super deal or someone is trying to f me over. Its for an xbox 360 elite for $250.

Anway they are in Long Island and i am from NJ (hour and a half away) and they offered to ship it to me and I would pay via paypal.

If he does indeed f me over can i go thru paypal and get my money back?
or am I beat?

Is there any way i can protect myself so if this doesnt go down right i'll be ok?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

just make sure you pay with a credit card through paypal and if you don't get it dispute the charge and you should be fine. Don't go through paypal disputes because if he's trying to rip you off he'll just withdraw all the money and paypal will say "we tried to get it back for you but couldn't, tough luck".
Agree to meet him halfway at a Starbucks or mall food court, and get it in person...
That might work....other thing is what if its a busted one or worse banned?
I would just make the drive to pick it up and make sure it works
Agreed. Make a day out of it, I'm sure there's something you want/need to do between NJ and Long Island :)

And make him show you it's functionality before you buy it, including going on Live.

don't waste your time.. nobody is going to show up. it'll be 3+ hours with traffic of your life wasted. craigslist is notorious for 1) low-ballers and 2) scammers.

ask yourself.. why the hell would they sell something that retails for $450 for $250? if they could easily get more for it, why wouldn't they?

post the ad.. i want to see how obviously bogus it is or not

Here ya go,
Im thinking I am not going to go thru with this.

1)I have a bad feeling about this.
2)He said he will also throw in Halo 3 for the samel price.......
3)Id have to scratch up the funding for it, no disposable income at this point in time.

nobody throws in a $60 game out of the goodness of their heart!

no pics? i'd say have them at least take a damn picture with your name in the shot.. but this is clearly bogus until proven otherwise.

come on.. what about this makes you think there's a shred of it being legit?

I saw a low price and figured id give it a shot and try to get more details out of it...but nothing rubed me the right way so the beauty of the situation is i can say fuck it :)

if it was nearby, i'd say MAYBE go for it, just so you learn that ads like this are bullshit... but this would be a 3 hour round trip waste of time, at minimum. i went to long island and back once and it took about 4 hours.

Agreed.

If it sounds too good to be true...

I smell permabanned modbox. OK if you aren't into anything XBL, I guess (I stay away from mods, period), but very very VERY impossible to un-bork. I know a guy who tried to get warranty service after he flashed the drive ROM. They said no (not even for $150) and charged him 2 way shipping to get it back to him (he was lucky I hear-sometimes they don't return them).

I'd never buy a used console that I couldn't try or rely on a trusted store's return policy.

Well, I'm pretty sure that all of the ads that list a copied-and-pasted list of the system's contents and features are scams. They crop up ALL the time here in SF and they're all total bullshit.

On a side note, I stumbled across the world HQ of Craigslist last weekend. It's a tiny house next to a donut shop with "Craigslist.org" stenciled above the door. Last I checked, the whole enterprise was still run by just 4 guys.

Oh my fucking God, seriously, is Craigslist the new Ebay now?

I remember every time a good deal came up on ebay, everyone would go ape nuts about how much of a "scam" it was and how everyone on ebay was out to "scam" you.

Now it's Craigslist.

I've done plenty of deals over Craigslist, never scammed, hell I once was going to buy a PS2 w/ Network Adapter, mem card, 2 controllers and 14 games for 100.00. The guy said "oh wait, I realized I have 41 games, not 14, I'll sell it to you for the same price though".

Guess what, I went home with a PS2 with 41 games for 100.00.

Wanna know something that is a sure-fire scam buster? It's called "human connection". If you talk to the person on the phone and you pick it up in person, it's 99% of the time not a scam. People aren't usually willing to scam when you put a face/voice/actual real life person into the picture...but it's pretty easy to do when all you see is words on a computer screen.

You also have to remember that to most Non-CAG/Internet Savvy users that they will buy a system and not want to hassle with selling it on ebay or anywhere else, and they will trade it in to Gamestop or sell it super cheap just because they need the money.

And my 2 Cents, OP, if you don't have any disposable income at the moment, I really don't think you should be buying video games. You'll come across a good deal in the future, don't worry.

Take it from someone who, by your definition, was on the 1% side of things, be careful. I don't recommend having a gun stuck in your face while trying to buy merchandise from craigslist. Been there, done that...

Just one thing, it is not possible to mod the elite right now unless the person got it very early on. So I would say very slim chance of a banned system because of modding.

Oh, believe me, I'm a 100% supporter of Craigslist on the whole. I've found a girlfriend, roommates, furniture, and gaming stuff galore on there for amazing prices. However, the reason I've had such good experiences and never gotten screwed over is because I know the scams when I see them. If the entire post said "Xbox 360 Elite-$250", a lot of people would freak out, but it could very well be legit. However, the ones with nothing but specs AND "will ship anywhere" are enormous red flags, at least in these parts.

How much did you pay for the girlfriend and roommates? :)
