(I know for a fact that CC did when I bought mine, never bought a system from Walmart, but they should be scanning in the seriel number)
All vendors do, and every game system sold now-a-days has one, even tiny ones like the GBA. It's now being done with video cards because of the massive amount of people buying them from BB and returning them with another card in the place. =(

I was in line at Wally World returning a duplicate wedding present when I heard "This isn't the system that was in the box when we sold it. The serial codes do not match." *BUSTED* I was in the middle of sipping a cherry icee at the time. Damn did it hurt when it came out my nose.

Original author, I hope you are able to get yours fixed.
Whats wrong with what the kid wants to do?Sony takes advantages of customers.Think they would really care about customers?

If it can work go ahead and do it I think its a good idea...
You mean that Sony is trying to make money off of their customers? Holy shit, they are evil because of that. Nobody else has ever done that. Now, I must say that Sony releases faulty products far too often, but you must remember the old phrase, "Caveat Emptor". It isn't a closely guarded secret that PS2's get DRE's. Just because you CHOOSE to buy their product, which the average consumer knows has some issues, does not give you the right to try to defraud a retailer selling their product. Take your criminal thinking bullshit elsewhere. And OP, please never return to this site.

I'm rather surprised at everyone's reaction to the man's dilemma, so I thought I'd point out something..

I have also experienced this problem. Not once, but twice. I've been buying systems since the early days of SNES, and have NEVER had as many problems as I have with my PS2. Point blank, it's a poorly made system. It's very frustrating having to cough up the money when my ps2 decides to get all pissy on me.

Before you decide to go do that, though, maybe consider taking some air-duster to that piece of shit. And when it finally decides to read disc, maybe you should consider taking it and trading it in at your local game-store (game-stop, ebgames, game crazy, etc) and putting the credit towards the PStwo. Less magnets = less problems.

Let us learn from our mistakes and refuse to buy in to a console that's not gonna work six months down the road. :D
