Only problem with replacing ps3 hard drive is it takes literally a day to back up the data to an external. I recommend if you going to replace your hard drive to just delete your game installed data to reduce the backup size

wheres a cheap external thats over a TB? i want to do this but id lose shared games from accounts i no longer have access to.

I highly suggest the Seagate Momentus XT 2.5 hard drive. It's hybrid, quiet, and no moving parts. That's what I'm going to get for my PS4.
I'm a fan of hybrid drives for applications like this. But the momentus xt isn't being made anymore. Seagate has their new more blandly named SSHD line that spins only at 5400 rpm, but seems to perform similarly: http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_sshd_thin_review_gen3_500gb_st500lm000

I'm running a 500GB/4GB momentus xt in one of my PS3s. Going to put a 1TB/8GB SSHD in another one. If data is on the SSD cache portion of the drive, it should load much faster than from a platter, but on the PS3 there are often other limiting factors (bluray reading, processor speed, SATA 1.5 GBit/s, etc.) An SSD would be theoretically faster, but probably overkill, not cost-effective, and limited by SATA1 and lack of TRIM, etc. Eurogamer took a look at this once:

Here's a demonstration of loading times using a hybrid drive when data are well cached:

this deal wont be live much longer i dont know what to do. i had to delete a ton of games off my 320 recently to make room for more.

There are always deals for HDDs. If you're on the fence, don't feel like you need to rush and buy this one. There's plenty of time to pick one up before launch.

I should have structured that sentence better. I thought maybe it ran SSD over regular hd. Speed and what have you.
Fair enough. SSD's are great. If only the PS4 had dual HDD support. SSD as the boot drive, and store all of your data on that secondary HDD. That's how my two desktops are, and I'm loving how fast they perform. I want to add a Cache Drive to my system, but I'm waiting until it hits $20. Not paying $40 for a 32GB SDD.

I know the system partition takes up a bit of the space, but much to my dismay, I just finished installing my new 1TB drive and only have 828gb out of 931gb available. Any one else with a drive this size have that much taken up for the system data?

what i did was buy a cheap slim external hard drive, take it out of the shell and put it in my ps3. then put my old ps3 hard drive and put it in the empty external shell and use it as an external hdd

I hear western digital has their own hybrid drive coming out that has 16/32 MB nand so far only oem builders has access to the drives.

I noticed some minor texture pop-in (and some missing streets) when I downloaded GTA V from PSN on Day One. Research suggested a newer, faster HDD would fix it, this deal popped up and I jumped on it. The HDD is scheduled for delivery today and should be swapped in tonight.

Rather than quoting posts and replying, in a nutshell:

  • This is a Hitachi drive and this division of Hitachi is owned by Western Digital
  • All PS3 systems use a 2.5", 9.5mm (height) or smaller drive -- I noticed some 7mm drives out there
  • 7,200 RPM drives allegedly help with load/run times -- there are several videos supporting this theory
  • I saw (but do not have a link) a video where the Seagate Momentus drive fixed the Skyrim lag problem before it was patched
  • Higher RPMs do not seem to be an issue with newer PS3 systems, though most posts I read claim it's not an issue at all now
  • HERE is the most technical article I found on PS3 HDD speeds
Send me a message later in the week if you're interested in the results of the swap--does high RPMs make a difference? etc. I'd be happy to follow up.

This wasn't even a good deal to begin with.

Protip:  Do NOT put a 7200 RPM in any PS3. Put a 5400RPM SSHD in it instead.  The ones with 8GB embedded SSD.  It will work even faster, stay cooler, and preserve your data more reliably.  When I put a 7200RPM drive in my original PS3, it died within a year, likely to due to overheating.

Dang. I remember a lot of back and forth about the 7200 thing.

We'll, Amazon has a 1TB Seagate Momentus for $61.99, if any of you are interested: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/320475-amazon-seagate-momentus-1-tb-5400rpm-25-hard-drive-ps3-upgrade-6199-fsssprime/
