Looks like a Fallout/Borderlands/Left4Dead Mash up to me.

More info coming during E3 in June.

Quite a surprise. I had written this one off, since the messaging had been so inconsistent. This game separates itself from the rest of the zombie pack in much the same way Broderlands seperates itself from the shooter pack.

Will keep an eye on this one.

getting this day one when it comes out they should make arcade games like DR did

Game looks really cool. I have been watching it, but dont know if I want a first person game like this. Was looking forward to a possible Dead Rising type game but without the damn timer.

Was thinking the same thing, with maybe like a hardcore mode (one hit and dead). FPS with melee weapons have a bad case of depth perception loss. Sometimes you just have no idea if it will hit or not (which is why most melee attacks in FPS's have a lunge).

True. I just cant get into any of the Fallout/Oblivion games due to that issue among others. Oh well, we will see how this one turns out and then go from there. Still looks really cool, just have to see how it actually plays.
there are hardly any guns in this game. to call it a FPS is really a stretch
By FPS I mean that the game is in first person. I'm sure there will be some shooting moments (the obligatory you versus a horde sequence). Either way the weapon throw is pretty killer.

It looks ok but I think my problem is unless this game can deliver hoards of zombies, I wont like it. One thing that left 4 dead and dead rising did was really portray the zombie attack by stockpiling shitloads of zombies at you.

If this game does that at points, they I am all for it. It looks fun.

i honestly dont think youre going to get that frag. especially since your weapons break after some time. i think its going for a little more realism (in a sense) in that, 1 guy/chick cant logically take on 500 zombies in an hour. hahaha. they even said in the vid that you will run out of stamina is you just hack away with no real precision or aim.

Sounds too complicated for me then. Zombie games should play like a zombie...brainless :) Even way back to the SNES and Genesis days with Zombies Ate My Neighbors, the best zombie games to me were mindless shooters or hack n slashers.

Yeah the RPG elements might turn some people off.

What I'm not sure about is how much fun the melee combat is going to be for 30 hours.

I think the RPG elements and the combat are what set it apart. I don't need a shoot the zillion horde game.. I have L4D 1 & 2 and Dead Rising. If I want a drop in and out zombie game with no real thought... again, see L4D. If they just did that, that would be very boring and you can get L4D games for next to nothing.

I don't mind the RPG elements at all (in fact I like that aspect). This game does indeed look fun since I can club a zombie's arm off or well hit a zombie wherever needed. I guess I am so used to massive zombie attack. I have my eye on this though, because this does look very fun and if they can portray at least the feeling of a survivalist nature I will enjoy it. I think what I am worried about is a lack of enemies, maybe not like 20 running at you, but a good 4-5 would do the trick at some points. I mean it is a zombie game, after all.

i like that you can use any vehicle and youre open to help or not help people. combat looks a bit stiff but i get a sense you can really explore this world like just cause 2 with zombies. not sure if its a day one purchase till i hear how long the campaign is and id also like to know if you do a 4 player game how far away can you get from each other. cant wait to see what the islad is like at night too.

wonder if they will release a demo down the road?

In the video I think he mentioned 30 hours. But I'm sure that is with all the side missions and stuff.

4 player I'm hoping will be like borderlands, where you can venture off where ever you want within the zone your group is in.

Not sure about a public DL'd demo, but they will have the Co-op up and running at E3 this year for people to get their hands on it.

this is where i stand. i dont want a mindless zombie game. i have those and thats pretty much all there is out there. id love a zombie game where i gotta worry about finding food/water and having no ammo

I've never seen a zombie game portrayed the way this video highlighted this game. I'm amazed to say that it touched me (0.0)

*soul clap*

Actually that is exactly how I would love this game to be (I used to love the classic Resident Evil games where they were more survival in nature). Something where you have to worry about finding ammo and stuff, but at the same throwing those intense oh my god moments out there. Nothing dead rising or left 4 dead level but I feel if I just walk a long street for the first time and see one maybe 2 zombies, it is not going to cut it for me.

especially if they come staggering out of the doors of diff buildings. man if they can pull off something like the opening to the original day of the dead that would be awesome.

and like you too ive been wanting a zombie game to be like this for ages now. a game where you can use whatever is around you , where you can find guns but ammo is limited so you have to think before shooting. the need to get food and water is cool too add to that 4 people playing together and it could be a grand time if they can pull it off.

my greatest fear is that they may be too ambitious for their own good and were left with one of those " aw man if it only had this or that it could have been the best damn game" games. they also need a solid story too somethign thats been missing in the current gen of zombie games.

i cant wiat to see the skills you can earn and level up and how. if they dont have hotwiring as a skill im going to be dissappointed.

I have a feeling you're going to be dissappointed. I see the game working similar to Borderlands...you pick one of the four characters, who each represent a specific class, and they each have a skill tree that augments their combat capabilities. Any additional skills you learn'll be of the combat variety...really doubt there'll be much surivival/utility stuff in there.

As far as the trailer...found it hilarious they were talking about "realism" so far as Stamina and a lack of guns were concerned, but their character was running around with an electric machete and throwing knives wrapped in C4.

Looks like it has potential and could be interesting. But it looks also, boring as fuck.

It screams farcry2 with zombies. Personally, I dont want to do fetch quests and shit in a game like this. Its like dead rising only in first person and dead rising was short as fuck in gameplay length and even it got really old by the end with its quests and side missions.

What are you talking about, being from an Island I can attest to electrically charged machetes and C4 loaded knives.
I'm really liking this game, from the first trailers to the gameplay, I hope it's not too hard though... not to sound like a n00b but I suck at managing with limited resources [never beat code veronica bc I used up all my rockets before a boss fight] and I don't want to get stuck like that again

I agree that melee in first-person is troublesome. Only FPS I've played has been Portal and Half-Life (and that wasn't even a month ago... yes, I'm just now giving FPSs a try), and in Half-Life with the crowbar I ultimately just stand still mashing R2 and wait for the enemy to walk into it. So in this where you got really fast deadly enemies, you have stamina that prevents you from spam meleeing, AND the weapons break... you got yourself a gumbo of frustration brewing.

All I can say is... gimme a chainsaw. I don't care if they're not practical because, as good ol' Bruce says, they're too damn heavy, I want one!

I really hope they redo the voice work. At least for the main characters you play as. From the two I've heard they are both really annoying.

It's more like Borderlands with zombies from what I've hearing/seeing. I believe they said it'd be about 30 hours in length too, which is pretty solid.

I didn't find it boring though, I'm not exactly sure what you expect to be doing in an First-person zombie game that takes place on an island. I mean, you could just face hordes and hordes of zombies but that would also be boring and repetitive. The quest system looks like it puts you in a variety of settings, and you have to ability to use all kinds of weapons. What exactly would make it less boring for you?

i hope its not like borderlands. That game was boring, and not enough random enemies roaming around it felt empty. and moving around the areas was painful. I'd rather have a fallout type mass open area with plenty of random enemies walking about.

edit: lol the uncensored logo is funny. they prob censored it over some racist bull idea
edit: lol the uncensored logo is funny. they prob censored it over some racist bull idea
They did. The ESRB stated that it looked like a lynching and could be seen as racist, so they banned the logo.

Don't really like that cover art that much. It looks a bit amateur. I also think the hanging is much worse than the one they're using for the US. The zombie clearly fits better there.

The lurching undead creatures known as zombies are often deemed less than desirable. However, publisher Deep Silver is hoping to attract the masses to its upcoming zombie survival game Dead Island with a special edition of the game.

Announced today, the Dead Island Special Edition will be exclusive to specialty retailer GameStop and will contain the Bloodbath Arena downloadable content, which Deep Silver values at $10. As for the content, the Bloodbath Arena pack is composed of both single-player and multiplayer challenges in four distinct areas.

Waves of zombies--each billed as more difficult than the last--will assault players in the Bloodbath Arena content, with players tasked with killing them off and staying alive. Additionally, gamers can display and track their progress via the Bloodbath Arena's leaderboards. And to help gamers in their deathly pursuits, the content will include an exclusive weapon: the "brain wave bomb."

The Bloodbath Arena DLC will go on sale for those who did not purchase the special edition at a later date, said to be "shortly" after launch.

On top of the above-mentioned items, the special edition will include exclusive cover art and a blueprint for an in-game weapon called The Ripper, which is a baseball bat combined with a buzz saw.

The Dead Island Special Edition will be available at no extra charge to "early" preorder customers at GameStop for a limited time and while supplies last.

Some sort of PS Home content going up soon. Not sure what the rewards will be... A few tee's shown below and some other items mentioned.

Can also pre-order via HOME. If it is like Killzone 3 it will be through Amazon. Hopefully they will have another free bonus content for using HOME like they did for that game too in the future.

In anticipation of the upcoming Dead Island TGI (total game integration), pop into PlayStation Home this Thursday, August 4th to check out the Zombie Survivor Quiz to determine your level of cunning against the hordes, and you’ll be rewarded for it. Be sure to check out the Dead Island swag too, including some horror-inspired blood splatter wall art for your personal spaces and some rudimentary weaponry so you will be best prepared for the undead invasion coming very soon.

Lol, people still use Home? I logged in once long ago just to see if I could burn my house down. I was disappoint.

Hoping the melee feels better than it looks. Because if not...yikes.

But still VERY interested in this game, though the multiplayer trailer does nothing for me.

The preview on Kotaku made it sound like the gameplay and the game were pretty solid but that there were some dumb little things he pointed out that are nit-picky. I'd like to think those are minor complaints, but that's the kind of stuff that really bugs me in a game.

Things that would be kind of annoying:
 • Attacks / Bodies in water did not result in clouds of bloody water
 • Zombies and players are forced to walk around small items like chairs instead of just stumbling through them.
 • Some obvious items on the screen can't be used as weapons
Things that he said were annoying that aren't a big deal:
 • RPG graded sticks and pipes- level 1 pipe vs level 5 pipe.
 • Your character has a detailed back story that doesn't factor into the game at all
 • Spending in game money(for some reason) to upgrade weapons at a bench.

I love everything about the game, except for the game itself. Graphics aren't very good. Plus I don't like the FPS Melee (it never feels or looks right). If they want the game to be heavy on Melee, then put the game into the 3rd person perspective. Other than those two issues, I love the setting of the game, I love the story. If the in game graphics looked as good as the trailer, 60 dollar purchase; after looking at the gameplay it was immediately obvious that this is a 30 dollar (maybe 25 dollar) game.
