any recommendations, i like HOMM V. I remember always reading that the older ones were better.

The older HOMM games are really good. Harder than the newer ones and more in depth in my opinion. HOMM 2 and 3 are the best ones in the series.

I've played HOMM I-V and IV was my favorite. I enjoyed them all, but I thought IV did the best job of encouraging you to use different strategies for the different factions.

I've also played M&M III, IV/V and VI. I bought all the others on GOG, but have not played yet. The 6 Pack (I-VI) is a great value for $5 - I would start with III, I think it's the most fun, but VI can be a good time too.

I played the hell out of HOMM 3 and M&M 6-8 years ago, easily hundreds of hours between them all, such fantastic games that I've long since lost the discs to. These are all ridiculously good values, I'll definitely pick up at least some of them.

I love the M&M series (non Heroes, I don't play that).

I may get 7 and 8 in addition to the first 6 that I already got, as I hear 9 sucks.

Also, anyone who thinks anything before 6 is too old, it ain't. Once you grab yourself a guide and read it for a bit, the game becomes very fun, and it gives a feel that no modern RPG can match.

Also, FYI, HOMM II is the DOS version.

Agreed 100%, it's very close to the top of my list for favorite game of all time. I never uninstall it and still play it a few times a year.
