[DEAD] The Third Man Criterion Collection (Blu-Ray) $15.99 @ Amazon

I think I saw part of this movie, but I forgot what it was called. This might be it. Does it contain a strange scene where [spoilers]there's a guy trying to ride a bike across the east/west Germany border but before he can cross the Soviets shoot and kill him?[/spoilers] Thanks in advance to anybody who can answer that question. I've been searching for that particular movie for a while. I picked up a movie called "The Fourth Man" but that wasn't it. Far from it, actually.

This is not that movie. I forgot what that film was called but it was filmed much later than The Third Man. This movie stars Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles.

I really dislike the fact that more and more often there are great deals on Blu-Rays, but not their DVD counterparts. It is very upsetting to see old school DVDs more expensive than BD.

There's nothing wrong with that situation that a Playstation 3 won't fix.

I think it would take a very long time to "Pay Off" a PS3 with the lower prices of Blu-Rays. There have been about four instances in which BD are cheaper than DVDs and those four instances are still out of my 5-dollar-DVD-price-range. Tragically, there are not a lot of good movies in there, which is why it would be awesome for the Criterion Collection to drop all the way down to those prices.

Let me know if anyone has any issues with the graininess of this Blu-ray. Is it really as big a deal as some of the reviews on Amazon make it out to be? Considering this is Criterion, I would be surprised if it is.

The film was made in 1949. They can only do so much... What are you expecting with something so old?

The grain is in the film... if you prefer DNR, well, I suggest having your eyes retrofitted with Vasoline lenses. The bottom line is that grain is inherent in film just like noise is inherent in digital. What Criterion is interested in is getting the most accurate (to the source) images as they can... however they will not DNR the image in order to reduce grain, which would also reduce picture sharpness.

What I'm getting at is why should I buy it on Blu if I have it on DVD already, and the picture quality is not a big improvement? Granted the price is pretty good so anyone who doesn't own it on DVD should consider it but I'm just going to sit this one out. Thanks.

Oh, ok... I recently watched this on DVD after watching it on Blu-ray. I think the improvement is quite evident. However, the DVD version I watched was the original Criterion release of The Third Man, not the more recent DVD edition that had the same cover art as the Blu-ray.

The most notable differences were (obviously) black levels and picture sharpness in well lit scenes. The funeral scene is particularly clear on the Blu-ray when compared to the DVD.

Was the transition to DVD difficult for you as well? I'm just askin'. The benefit of getting a PS3 is that you could also play PS3 exclusives, which of course are not numerous, but there are several good ones by now, at least. And then there's the improved picture and sound quality of Blu-Rays...
