CheapyD's Cheap Ass Guide to Secure Online Gaming
with your Cheap Ass D-Link DI-614+/DI-514 Router

This guide is based on the admin sofware for the D-link DI-614+ Wireless Router.
I really hope its the same as the DI-514, otherwise I just wasted a lot of time.

Its purpose is to keep your network secure and make your online game as smooth as possible.
I do not claim to be an expert on Networking, but I believe this is a good solution, especially if you don't want to slow down your connection by enabling WEP. If someone has a better solution, lets hear it!

Keep your console off for now...

Getting your network info
1) Open your router's software in your browser: http://192.168.0.1/

2) If you haven't changed your user name and password, your username is admin and your password field should remain blank.

3) Click on the top tab that reads Status

4) Click on the left tab that reads Log. See those numbers? Thats your PC...make note of your IP ADDRESS (numbers that look like "192.168.0.101") and your MAC ADDRESS (letters that look like "00-40-08-25-60-D7")

5) Turn on console and try to go online with it.

6) Refresh your browser until you see some numbers and letters come up on the log screen. Thats your console....make note of the same things you did in step 4.

Protecting your network
7) Click on the top tab that reads Advanced

8) Click the left tab that reads Filters (this is part where we stop your neighbors from stealing your internet connection. If you live in a big city, this is pretty important.

9) Select the "MAC Filters" radio box and enter in the MAC ADDRESSES you took down in step 4. First do your PC, you can even name it. Hit the green Apply button when finished entering your PC's info. Do the same thing with your console's MAC ADDRESS, might as well give it a name too. Hit the green Apply button.

10) When you are finished entering both your PC and your console's MAC addresses, and you see them displayed below in the MAC Filter List, select the radio box that reads Only allow computers with MAC address listed below to access the network and hit the green Apply button. You will probably lose your wireless connection for a moment as your router configures itself. Now only your PC and console can access your network.

Onward to getting your console free of your router's firewall
11) If you are no longer looking at your router's admin screen in your browser, go back to http://192.168.0.1/ and login again.

12) Click on the top tab that reads Advanced.

13) Click on the left tab that reads DMZ. Enter in your console's IP ADDRESS that your got in step 4. Select the radio buttion that reads Enabled and hit the green Apply button. You've just freed your console from the router's firewall.

14) You are done! You may have to reboot your console, but you should be good to go. Yeah, I know didn't really need to write down your PC's IP address.
Ha! Ha! Made ya write down an IP address for no reason!

This setup will work as long as you can get your cable/dsl modem near enough to your console and this router.

I bought this setup last year and here is how I set it up:

1) Connect cable/dsl modem to router WAN port via ethernet cable
2) Connect console to router LAN port via ethernet cable
3) Connect wireless usb adapter to PC

This is the cheapest way to set up a wireless network that I know of, but it will not work for you if you can't get your console, router, and modem near enough to each other to be connected together with ethernet cables.
Your PC can be located anywhere since its connected wirelessly.

I hope a lot of you get on on this deal, so I can play you PS2 owners online!

Oi! Thanks! I think I'm gonna get this! Well, my XBOX and PC are at a maximum of about 5-7 feet away. Is this too far away?

About how far do you think that the maximum distance is for this?? I see really no point if they have to be close enough that they could easily enough be connected by an ethernet cable.

Nevermind now i see that the computer could be located anywhere.
Oi! Thanks! I think I'm gonna get this! Well, my XBOX and PC are at a maximum of about 5-7 feet away. Is this too far away?
I would suggest that you not even use the wireless usb part of this. you could just as easily just buy a cheap ethernet cable, but if performance is not hindered, why buy the cable, again i don't really know too much so you would have to consult CheapyD.

Hmmm.....I just read that I can set up a wireless network...Uhm, All I want is just to connect my PC and XBOX together so I can use XBOXCONNECT, and still use the internet at the same time. Would it work like that, or is this wireless ONLY?
Oi! Thanks! I think I'm gonna get this! Well, my XBOX and PC are at a maximum of about 5-7 feet away. Is this too far away?
Well, in that case you don't even need a wireless router or usb adapter, just get a regular router and connect everything via ethernet cables.

If you plan on getting on moving the PC in the future, and/or plan on buying a wireless laptop in the future then you may want to go with this deal.
Hmmm.....I just read that I can set up a wireless network...Uhm, All I want is just to connect my PC and XBOX together so I can use XBOXCONNECT, and still use the internet at the same time. Would it work like that, or is this wireless ONLY?
Yes, this will function fine as a regular router too.

CheapyD said somewhere else that this router has the same four insertion points for ethernet in the back so it is simply just a regular router with wireless capabilities.

I plan on one day having my XBOX Upstairs and my comp downstairs. And regular routers can go more expensive than this, so I'm gonna jump allover this deal....once my dad comes home. :|

The router can work as both a wireless access point and wired router. For the set-up you have, you could just get a length of RJ45 cable and run it from your nic card on the computer to the router, and take another length of ethernet cable and run it over to the Xbox. If you do buy the wireless adapter, you could use it attach another machine to your network wirelessly, or even let a neighbor use it to "leech" off of your internet connection, depending on the construction of your house, as a good wireless router will often give a signal that cares for couple hundred feet, depending on the architecure of the buildings and landscape of the area you live.. steel, etc distrupt the transmission of radio waves, an therefor would cause issues with the signal from the router.

I'd be careful before you get too gung-ho...
While many, many people still use 802.11B, 802.11G has already been introduced, which offers speeds up to 54 instead of the 11 offered by B.
802.11B hardware is going to be getting cheaper and cheaper as G becomes more prevalent.

Of course, if you are only going to use it with your PC and Xbox, the deal is good for you... but if you have dreams of creating a larger wireless network, you may want to just invest the extra money into G right now, or wait for B hardware to drop even further in price.

Yeah,Cheapy's getting sick of getting murdered by Bluetoast in Amplitude, and kicking my butt in Amplitude. There must be fresh meat!!!
I'm in the checkout process, and its not giving me free shipping.....
Can't imagine why it wouldn't work.

Most routers and wireless access points have complete documentation on how to set up and configure the device. In my experience, the most you ever really have to do is load in a small software app provided by the router/access-point manufacturer... those you can very often just work around that if you don't feel like adding thier app to your machine.

WEll, I dunno. They're charging me $11 total for Shipping and tax. Well, I bought it anyways, and dont care.

Ok.
I called them, and they said I was out of their shipping range. I live in the USA, and am only 2 hrs away from a Office Depot. They make me mad. Oh well, what can you do tough?

Hi guys. I have a computer and a ps2 in my room and i have another computer in my brothers room down the hall. I'm just wondering if its possible to connect all three so they can all go online. Also will my bandwidth be affected because of this thanks. :D

Yup, just buy this setup and you will be all set, although you will need some ethernet cables.
In your room, plug the PC, PS2, and modem into the router via ethernet cables and use the wireless usb adapter on your brother's PC.

Your speed will only be noticably affected if you are doing bandwidth intensive stuff, like downloading large files on the PCs, but this has nothing to do with it being wireless, its just the fact of life when sharing an internet connection.

Specz, think of the source of your internet connection as a pipe, and the data coming through it like water. If you set a bucket under the pipe, it will fill up quickly. But if you set up a system of funnels that takes that water and puts it into three different buckets, then they won't fill as quickly.
No water is lost in the process, but the percieved speed will be slower.

Does anyone happen to have any experience with this particular router? It's getting rotten reviews (Cnet, Epinions, Amazon), especially for its range.
Does anyone happen to have any experience with this particular router? It's getting rotten reviews (Cnet, Epinions, Amazon), especially for its range.
It got 4/5 stars from Amazon and Epinions, but I saw some bad user reviews on CNET.

I have last years model, DI-614 and have had no problems with it.
I live in a small apartment, so range isn't really an issue.

I paid $50 for this (equivalent) combo last year and have no complaints.

If i want to get my PS2 to go online, but my computer and PS2 are in completely seperate rooms then will this still work? I'm confused...

The simple answer is yes.

Here is what CheapyD is telling you to do.

Step 1. Buy the router and adapter.
Step 2. Unwrap said components
Step 3. Attach Wireless adapter (via USB) to the computer that already is connected to your modem.
Step 4. Attach your PS2 and whatever other devices you want to use in the other room to the Wireless router via RJ45 ethernet cables.
Step 5. Configure router and adapter as specified by CheapyD's instructions and the documentation with the router.

You are probably confused because one of the previous people asked if he could use the wireless router/access point as a wired router on his home network.

This device can be used as both.

Wait... so my modem stays attached to my PC, just like it is now? I thought you put the modem, PS2, and router together, and the PC and adapter together in the next room. *is confused* :?

There are multiple ways to do the setup, though CheapyD's is easier to do, would require less configuration time, and be more managable.
I was specifically pointing out the way the other person would have to configure thier hardware with the set-up they had.

If you do plan to do it, I would suggest that you use CheapyD's method first.

Of course, you could also just watch for other deals on better hardware.
A couple of months ago, I got a G router/access point, G wireless notebook card, and G wireless adapter (along with Xbox Live) for around 150 dollars after about 200 dollars worth of rebates.

Well, now I know why my shipping was $5 when there was free shipping. It seems I somehow selected overnight shipping. :/

Anyways, I use it now, and its very perfect. I love it. 5/5 from me. :)

What if i have a linksys wireless router already? the computernis upstar and the xbox/ps2 in the living room. how can i connect the two togethrr?

Depends how much you want to spend.
Linksys and Microsoft both make a wireless adapter that makes adding game consoles to a wireless network ridiculously easy... of course, i think both of them are G and cost around 50-70 dollars.
I do think Linksys makes a similar piece of B hardware, which would likely be cheaper.

1) Move the router and cable/dsl modem near your consoles.
2) Connect consoles and modem via ethernet cables to router.
3) Buy wireless USB adapter and connect it to PC.

My Xbox is upstairs and my computer is downstairs. Will it produce a strong enough signal to go through the floor, or isn't this worth buying? The only way I'll ever connect to Xbox live is if I get a wireless router, but I don't want to buy this and then have the wireless connection not reach.

Unless the floors in your home are solid steel, your computer sits in a radio-wave shielding room, or your home is so large that it would be over 200 feet away from the router, you should have no problem.

Help?

I'm having the same problem! I told my girlfriend about the deal earlier on monday and she ordered it and received it yesterday. I fell in love with it and i want one too but now this damn error message keeps popping out. The shopping cart doesn't seem to register the two main items (router and adapter). It worked on monday...

i cannot seem to get this router to work completely with xbox live. HELP! I am able to logon to xbox live and start playing but it will not allow me to invite a friend or join a friends game. what do i need to do?

You want to make sure that you put your Xbox in the DMZ...sounds like the firewall is blocking it.

You do this in the routers config menu that you access in PC's browser...check the manual.

I will post a guide on how to do this when I get some free time.
