I'm getting a DVD burner for Christmas, and was wondering what kind of software CAG's recommend, and any possible deals on it. I have Nero for CD burning and am really pleased with it, so I was wondering if their DVD burning stuff is as good? I know I need other stuff if I wanted to rip dvd's or whatever but I didn't want to ask here.

OK thanks guys. I had already downloaded DVD shrink a couple weeks ago when I found out that was good. I guess I'll just install it once I get the burner.

Your burner probably also came bundled with some software unless it was OEM. But yes, the best DVD burning software is free (i.e., DVDShrink).

DVD Shrink's site says it uses your own burning software, and provides a link to Nero to download it. Will it actually do the burning without Nero or another program?

get dvdshrink if you aren't getting a dual layer dvd+/-rw it'll compress 8.4gb dvd movies to fit on 4.7gb disc, it is also very easy to use, i believe you need nero to burn the files though

dvddecrypter copies the files without compressing them i guess, i used it and got 7gb of files while dvdshrink gave me 4.35gb, i dont have a dual layer burner so i cant use dvd decrypter

I've been using Nero 6 Ultra Edition, it's pretty good. Definately worth the $15 I payed for it (after instant & MIR).

yeah, if you get the full package of nero 6, it has pretty good dvd software with it.. my understanding is that some OEM packages don't have all the software, so you have to read carefully what you're purchasing..

Edit: I use Nero for authoring my own DVDs, but as for copies, I use Pinnacle Instant Copy for my dvd burns after a rip with DVDDecrypter. Instant Copy takes a lot longer, but gives a much better quality video after compression to a 4.7gig DVD than most of the free packages that I've tried.

I usually end up getting the new version every time for free after rebate by watching bargain sites :)

I use Decrypter to rip the disk ISO, then Shrink to manipulate the image content. Once I remove everything I don't want. (extras, foreign language tracks) I write a new ISO with Shrink, then go back to Decrypter to burn. I have yet to make a coaster with these two FREE programs, which is hardly what I can say for DVDCopyXpress. Join the forum at dvddecrypter.com to learn all you want about the two programs. (By the way, Shrink is compatable with Nero 6, but I've found that with decrypter, you don't need it.
Happy burning!

I bought the full version of Nero that's retailed for $99 right now. Saved $85 after instant and MIR. I'm not sure if it's worth $99 but definately worth $15.

What bargain sites are you talking about, if I may ask?

I was talkiing about Pinnacle Instant Copy for free after rebate.. I got version 7 and then version 8 that way from reading Ben's Bargains..

XCopyXpress is absolute crap. Its no wonder they went out of business, between the lawsuits and crappy software...

Yes, I was aware that you were talking about Pinnacle Instant Copy :D . Thank you for the website.

yeah I almost posted that here, but I don't believe the OEM version has full DVD support like the Ultra:

*Special versions that do not support SVCD and DVD-video.

still, it's a good deal if you're just using Nero to burn CDs..

I should have read the description more carefully. :D That would explain why it's so cheap.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, should be ready to burn the day I get it hopefully. By the way the burner I am getting is OEM, its the NEC 3500 from newegg.com.

I managed to acquire the Holy Grail of DVD burning software, DVDxCopy Platinum complete with registration info. Now I just need a DVD burner so I can use it

I got one of the 3500's too. Good choice, you won't be dissapointed.

BTW Nero 6 Ultra is great ....cough...p2p......cough

[quote name='unisol']I was looking through Ben's Bargains and saw a link to SoftwareOutlet.com that's selling Nero 6 - The OEM Suite for $4.99.

You forgot to read the disclaimer:
*Special versions that do not support SVCD and DVD-video.

Not to mention it's Nero Express and not Nero Burning ROM

Edit:
My bad. That only applied to the Nero Vision Express 2 & Nero ShowTime components. Still, having Nero Express instead of the Pro version sucks arse.
