Death Jr. - August 16th - Pre-order for Awesome Goodies!

so far the only title on the PSP that I have not sold (due to all th other games lacking... for reasons I can't even understand), like Coded Arms and Hot Shots Golf, is Lumines... I only own one damn game for the system... but that's not counting the homebrew.

there is a downloadable comic from the official web site (http://www.deathjr.com/)
it looks like it might be the one given away as preorder incentive, the instructions say "drag from cd to thew psp directory"

kinda lame they are giving away preorder stuff (if its true). you get more for preorder, but they should have at least waited till after relase, sheesh

I received a preview copy of Death Jr. last night.
I only had a chance to play it for about 20 minutes, but it seems like it could be a good Ratchet & Clank type game, but I didn't really have much time to play it.

The cutscenes are really sharp.

Do you get preview builds and free games often? Might have to start up my own popular game forum...:whistle2:k

ooh, i just thought of something...

cheapyd, do you know if it was the full retail version? if so, did it do a firmware check? what firmware did you play it on?

thanks!

I was going to get this, but instead I'm going to wait a month for MediEvil Resurrection.

Very nice extras though, but I can't bring myself to get both.

I just preordered the LE.

I'll post impressions of the game when I get it.

I'm really into horror/zombie/ghost games these days. Need like a Silent Hill or Siren game on PSP.
The offical site for the game is giving away free copies in a contest: http://www.deathjr.com/contest.html
CAG's gonna have one too...soon.

EDIT: Oh, and it didn't update my firmare, as far as I know. I don't think you will see games do that until later this year.

I had a feeling it seemed very R&C'ish... this could be a very good thing.

My PSP has a thick layer of dust on it, so this may be just what I need to give it a go.

I'll have to preorder this tomorrow as I still have about $28 in credit. Even though I've gotten 3 games so far for PSP this one and Tokobot are the ones I've really been waiting for. Those and Hot Shots Golf which I still haven't picked up yet.

Reviewed at IGN - 7.0

http://psp.ign.com/articles/641/641671p1.html

IGN seemed to like it... they said it could have used more time in development (didn't this get delayed for more dev time??) but that the action is great, with no slowdown.

They compare the game to R&C, like Cheapy did.

The camera isn't the best, and they say there is no quick select for the weapons, so switching weapons quickly is hard to do.

I still want it, but not at 40.. it's too bad no one had it on sale this week.

Aha! I got a copy of Death Jr. (I actually paid my buddy for his advance copy... :p bastard). Still, it was worth every penny. I think the game is super-cute, great platforming, and definitely the start of a franchise. I didn't find the camera to be all that obnoxious, but I just played Whiplash for PS2 which had a super-annoying camera, so maybe that's why.

Love the characters. You really can't beat exploding hamsters.

Yeah, I went to rent it today...BB did not have it. I will NOT buy it since reviews have been average at best.

MediEvil seems to be getting mixed impressions already too...we'll see

Yea... OPM gave it 2.5 out of 5 now.

I'm not sure why reviewers are so filled with hatred towards the PSP's library. Are they really bad games, or are reviewers comparing them to other console titles, instead of other portable titles?

I mean, IGN comapred Death Jr to Ratchet And Clank alot... is that really fair?

This will most likley be my only PSP ourchase this year, besides Medevil (if it dosn't force an upgrade), so I am looking forward to it.

Any pictures of the Deluxe version? Is it in a bigger box/slipcase?

The GS review of Death Jr is negative from the start, and the reviewer expressed his displeasure at the fact that the game did not have a darker theme.

Reviews are good, FOR ME TO POOP ON!

I have a lot of opinions on why reviewers are doing this. First: it is early in the process. I'm not sure if people who play games and write reviews are really playing them in different places or on the bus or waiting for the bus of whatever. There really is a difference in what makes a good handheld game v. what makes a good console game. Second: It costs almost as much to make a PSP game as it does to make a PS2 game. It's not attractive as many developers due to this, and the games are not designed to take full advantage of the PSP.

That said, I'm still playing Death Jr. and it's great. The graphics are great, the story is adorable, it's a solid, well put together platform game. And the gameplay lends well to portability, which is my first requirement for a portable game.

Actually, in an interview with the people who made Death Jr, they claim it costs alot less to develop for the handheld systems, so that's why new IP's like Death Jr are possible.

Well I'm glad to hear some people are enjoying this because I'm about to go pick it up and was debating wether or not to just cancel my preorder and buy something else with the $$$....

just got mine, havent even played it. the extras are cool. the protectors are hori and all the le stuff comes in a nice little folding cardstock case.

looks like the comic may be the same one you can download from the official site. but they dont get the nifty mini-cd. sweet.

Yup the extras on the LE are nice, just uploaded em myself. But really, why does half of the soundtrack have to be generic sounding rap music? Since when is DJ 'street'?

Anyway, I'll post more when I finally sit down and play it.....

I rather like the soundtrack. The drum beats sound similar to modern rap, but I don't see much of a connection otherwise. Some of the songs have moved straight up to my "to sequence" list. Minus, of course, the songs they've already provided MIDIs of. :p

The UMD cases are much better than I expected. Hori brand, no less! I haven't been disappointed by them yet.

I haven't played much of the game just yet, but so far I'm liking it.

The Hori cases that come with it totally own the pelican cases.

They probably add $8 to the value of the LE version.

And the CD has music, a comic (high an low res versions), and ringtones (mp3 and midi).
Well it was a pre-order 'incentive', not available to all stores. Regardless, this is a great game!
:( I didn't get any of that stuff. I agree, it's a great game, the more I play it the more I like it. I expected it would be easier and more for kids, but it's not, it's challenging.

My gamestop and EBgames both have a ton of copies of the LE, hell the clerk at EBgames even told me no one bothered to preorder it!

The store I work at got equal amounts of each edition... two copies each. -_-'

Just finished reviewing this for Yahoo. Gave it 3 out of 5. Won't say much as I literally just submitted it.

Here's one thing to consider re: reviews, guys. You paid your hard-earned money for a game, so you're going to try your best to enjoy it. Professional reviewers don't have that need to get their money's worth, because they didn't buy the game they're reviewing.

We also usually don't get these crazy pre-order packages to sweeten our overall opinion. We just get the game, play it, and analyze as we see fit. I'm not meaning to defend any specific reviews, but rather the reviewing process. I'm just a gamer like everyone else here; I just make a living being one.
