December 2006 Backwards Compatiblity Update (Live, now with 100% more Conker/SCII)
I mean, PDO probably uses an engine unique to itself so that's why it's taking so long... I know that's the reason behind Morrowind taking forever as well.

It's a blessing we're even still getting BC updates since the general tone a few months was that "it wasn't worth the effort".

But now that we're getting some things like Shenmue 2, I can't imagine that PDO is far behind.

I'm halfway tempted to sell my DC copy of Shenmue 2 and just get it for the 360 now, espically since I can get $50 for my import and get it on the Xbox for $5.99 at EB.
didn't peter moore say that their ultimate goal was to get at least 80% of the games BC within the 360's lifespan? then again, nobody can trust console spokespeople anymore... unless it's done with finger puppets.

I think Peter Moore was also the one who made some comment about BC not being worth their time... I remember CAG made a ruckus over something he said about dissing BC.

Here it is:

"Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible."

He added: "more are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compatible."

I wouldn't mind if the 200 - 300 he is so content with were mostly good games, but about 200 of them are shit.

The dub for Shenmue II will give your ear gonorreah.... it's one of the most atrocious things ever produced and it's far worse than the dub Shenmue I got. So don't sell it.
Awesome news on Psychonauts and Indigo.

Here's hoping that January will bring Phantom Dust as well :D
While you never know what games will come in the next update, I wouldn't expect another one so soon.
Backwards compatibility and "upscaling" are apples and oranges. Again, you may prefer the games running in HD (who wouldn't?), but the key element to backwards compatibility -- by definition -- is having the games from the previous generation or so be compatible with the current system. When someone bills their system as BC, that's what they mean. "Slightly more than half our games run, but they look better on a good TV" isn't really the understood definition of the term.
Regardless of how you define backwards compatibility, I much prefer "Slightly more than half our games run, but they look better on a good TV", than "all games running exactly as they do on your old system". Which I know PS3 doesn't even run all the old games as well as PS2 (even a PS2 upgraded PS1 games) and I'm guessing the Wii doesn't run GC games as well as a GC either.
and I'm guessing the Wii doesn't run GC games as well as a GC either.
Most GC games were already at 480p to begin with, though, at least all the major ones I can think of and the Wii has component cables that aren't the price of a firstborn child.

I wish this damn update would go live, itching to play Psychonauts.

Seeing how the Wii uses the exact same CPU and GPU as the gamecube, just clocked faster, and more Ram, I don't see why they shouldn't run perfectly on the Wii. It should be very much like just upgrading your PC and running your old games.

True dat...Sell that...Although, you might want to hold onto it...The value may spike if a Shenmue 3 ever comes out...Then again, that's just wishful thinking...

When is this update going to be live? I tried Shenmue last night, and got an error message
When is this update going to be live? I tried Shenmue last night, and got an error message
Sometime this month.

The site before they pulled it said December 2006.

The Xbox version of Shenmue 2 has the Japanese voices with subtitles, you know.

Personally though, I use the English voices for laughs.
Its up now.
?

It's still showing the old list for me.

- edit Ah, I see it.

List and thread title updated.

Thanks for the update. I think I'm gonna try some Conker and remind myself why it's so bad, then finally play Psychonauts for the first time.

i need reports on how scarface runs, NOW!
Also where is the oddworld strangers rath support?
AND MERCENARIES!
Now I need to go get Scarface, Conkers, & Stubbs the Zombie.

Oh and how long has Stubbs been on that list?
I believe since launch.
Ill want reports of how well Scarface runs
on this.........
Same here, I'm waiting to see if it runs good before I go out and buy it.
Oh and Conker snuck in on the list as well :)
AWESOME!!!

Now I just need to find somewhere that sells it cheap

holy shit!!!!!

awesome now i can beat armageddon and finally neat shenmue 2 (sucks i have to start from scratch but i really dont remember anything anyways)
AWESOME!!!

I feel the same way, yay Conker. My closest EBgames and Gamestop (they are within a mile of each other) now have 4+ each, used, so finding one in good condition shouldn't be too hard.

$17.99 is way too much money to pay for it, imo, espically since I haven't paid more than $10 for any Xbox game yet (and I own some of the best ones so far, imo).

I think I'll actually hit up some pawn shops to find it for $10 and under.
Good update but where are the 2-D Fighters?!?
I implore Microsoft to heed this man's request ... and make more of the Capcom/Sammy games BC'd.

GULITY GEAR FTW!!!

Did Psychonauts have issues during the cutscenes on the original Xbox? There seems to be a framing problem during the opening one for me.

So who here is going to be the guinea pig and try out SC: Double Agent? After hearing about the original xbox version having so many differences I'm considering selling my 360 version (which I already played through once) and buyin' the xbox version instead of giving the 360 one a 2nd playthrough. I'd just like to know if the emulation runs well or not though first...

Even though I already own the 360 version I'm seriously considering buying the regular XBox version now that its BC, mostly because of all the good things I've been hearing about it. Once I can find it for cheap I'll be getting it for sure.

Shenmue seems to be fine so far. I think the voice acting got worse though.

I noticed a little slow down when I'd enter an area with a lot of people. It lasted a second then went away. other than that it seems fine.

That slowdown has always been in the game. It is one of the reasons some people prefer the DC version.

gotcha.

btw, in case anyone is wondering, this game is $6 at EB. It's worth checking out, if only for the voice acting. it's so bad, it's worth paying $6 to hear. the game is pretty decent too-- it's like GTA, the Die Hard Arcade game and Animal Crossing all in one.
gotcha.

I'm definitely getting it for $6, espically since someone in here also confirmed you can do Japanese voices with subtitles on the Xbox version.

Let's see, do I keep my pain in the ass European import for Dreamcast that I never bother to hook up and play, or do I get it for $6 at EB and run it in 480p?

WOW, tough decision!

It also has that disc that sums up Shenmue 1, right?

Is it the first one or the second one where he goes around everywhere asking for sailors?

Yes but if you get the game via trade in, there is a good chance that it will not be included. When I traded in one of my copies the guy said that no one ever trades it in with the movie.

Each EB near me has stacks of the game, so I'll try my luck ;)
Anyone wanna play some Conker this weekend? I've always wanted to try it online.
Its pretty bad, its almost impossible to be able to tell what's going on and what you're doing.
