First post, longtime lurker. I am looking for a desktop package or just CPU. Looking to stay in 300-500 range. Work tasks (word, excel, quicken), multimedia, and occasional gaming. Any deals appreciated. Thanks.

Spend more money if you want to game. If you want prebuilt and want ultra cheap- try www.newegg.com they sell some prebuilt systems though you will have to look

Otherwise, just get a netbook.

Hi, I'm not sure what kind of games you would like to play on this machine but it is a very low price range for a gaming pc. for 700$ you can get a decent machine that is upgradable through the next couple of years if you build it right. However sticking inside your price range I built a few pcs with newegg components to see if its possible to build an acceptable machine for gaming on it that budget. If you want to be able to play the newest games as they are release over the next few years this machine wont do it, but it will play whats out now acceptably.

This will play most of the games out now but the future is up in the air, and there is little upgradability. Also it is missing a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers. I assumed that you would have them laying around. If not, all of it but the monitor can be cheaply obtained. You also need to know how to assemble the computer. I'll look around for prebuilt boxes and see what the manufacturers can come up with in that range and maybe try some other customs in that range and see if better could be done.

Dell: didn't find anything there in your price range that could game.
CyberPowerPC: I tried customizing through them and nothing in your range or even close.
Acer: nothing that can game in that price range
HP: nothing
the conventional avenues arn't yeilding results. Time to ebay:
oh wow try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/INTEL-DUAL-CORE...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1308
get that, then buy yourself a pci-e card from newegg, $440 after shipping. Again, not upgradable very long but its cheaper than selfbuilt through newegg...
still looking...

Thanks for the deals/replies. I should have been more specific. Play games like Far Cry, Call of Duty (this generation), etc... What is a great/reasonably priced graphics card to ad to a budget setup. Thanks.

Then go to newegg.com for 1-2more gigs of memory and a vidcard of your choice.

is'nt 2.8 ghz dualcore considered a functional minimum for gaming atm?
also, that dell listed above ,there is no pci-e x16 slot, only a pci-e x1 slot which wont support any gpus over the 8600 (correct me if im wrong) and thats unacceptable for gaming.
the acer link posted didnt show anything for me no matches.
the hothardware link is decent but its probably outdated, I could give you better specs on newegg if you wanna build.
this still looks like the best prebuilt option listed so far:
http://cgi.ebay.com/3GHZ-8400-CORE-...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1309
if I find any better bang for the buck I'll post it but thats pretty good prebuilt for the money. it will play all your current games but when it comes time to upgrabe its memory or its processor(a year or so) you will need to get a new motherboard first

WingedDragon that's actually an awesome deal I think, I'll bite on that one eventually. Been looking for a decent deal like that.

indeed, would be a good replacement for my parent's desktop since they are having problems with it.

Check www.dell.com/outlet and look for the XPS 420 or Inspiron 520 with a core 2 duo (not 520s). Either of these could form the basis for a good gaming rig. Saw a 520 on there this morning for $399 and a 420 for $559. The 420 will have a larger power supply so you could put a higher-end graphics card with no trouble. Often one can find discount codes for the Dell Outlet giving an additional 15-20% off. Stock changes all the time so you may need to be patient to find a good deal.
