Even though it's clear that the developers were aiming at making a ridiculous character that does stupid shit for a humorous effect -- not a "cool" effect -- not a "oh man our demographic that plays M rated hack-n-slash games are totally gonna dig this wicked new character." Get a touch on reality.
Sassy! "Cool" is a loose term. Comedy can be cool, horror can be cool... being badass can be cool but it does not automatically equate to it as you seem to imply. I know that when he does something stupid people laugh, they don't say "oh man what a badass", my comment was meant to imply "the only way I could appreciate this is if I was in the fifth grade."
iamsmart just takes himself way too seriously, and can't handle any sort of over the top campiness.
You only got it half right: I'm not serious, I'm pretty sure I'm the least serious person in this discussion right now because I'm not upset that someone changed the way a fictional character looks but yeah I don't find this to be "over-the-top hilarity." I like to think I'm quick to laugh, but I'm afraid I don't find Japanese humor to be as riotous as you guys do.
His appreciation of the DMC Anime Dante only reinforces the fact that he only likes super serious, brooding protagonists with a dark past and a scowl on their face.
If I'm guilty of wanting more pathos, then you guys are guilty of playing off his entire character as some sort of goofball. Yeah he does goofy things from time to time, mostly in DMC3 but there was also an element of drama to the games. Just read an interview with Hideki Kamiya on the conceptualization of Dante: he's supposed to be "stylish", a "joker" but also "carrying sadness" and "burning with anger", it's a mix of these elements. You can't have characters that lean too far on either of these sides: Kratos is too super-serious to be endearing but in my opinion Dante is too much of a clown to connect with, that's why I appreciate the opportunity to give him more identity while still being stylish and smartass.
if you think the new Dante is a badass with his faux tribal necklaces, wardrobe from the Salvation Army, and gaunt malnourished physique, then I feel bad for you.
Good news: you don't have to feel bad for me, because I never said I liked it.
Get your "something different" from Dante's Inferno or God of War.
That won't be necessary, luckily for me they're making a new DMC game that seems to suit just what I'm looking for!
Leave Devil May Cry to be what it is... because people actually like that, believe it or not.
Oh I believe it, I'm clearly the minority opinion here, that's why I get yelled at so much when I say that I appreciate a change of pace for the character. But it's what I like, what can you do?
