Finally! Season 1 of Dexter's Lab has made it to the "Cartoon Network Hall of Fame" DVD sets.
It seems Cartoon Network is finally bringing us all of the classic cartoons that are thought to be much better than the Current CN lineup.

YES.

I am loving the CN HoF releases thus far. Skipped Johnny Bravo, but Courage and Dexter are two of my most wanted shows on DVD.

HOLY fuckING SHIT.

I NEVER, EVER thought this would happen. Johnny Bravo and Courage, too!! fuckkkk yessss. I wish they'd do all the old What a Cartoon shorts and stuff, as well. Anyways, best DVD news in some time.

Hey Nickelodeon: ROCKO ON DVD, NOWWWWW.
After what season did Dexter's Lab change and become crap? Cuz I'll buy until then.
i want to know this too.
I enjoyed the early "cartoon cartoon" movement, but it quickly became crap

also, anyone else shocked that something from the late nineties is now referred to as "back in the day"? makes me feel old =[

YOU ARE STOOOOOOOPID
YOU ARE STOOOOOOOPID
YOU ARE STOOOOOOOPID

And don't forget

YOU ARE STOOOOOOOPID

We are old. We're reminscing about out youthful days. Kids now don't give a shit about all the awesome stuff we had back in the 90s. All they care about is their Xbox Live, their celly phones, and their HDTVs. Back in my day, if you wanted to play with someone, you called him over the landline and told him to come over and bring his controller so we could huddle around a 20" tube TV with one speaker and one coaxial input to play NES. And afterwards, we'd have a jolly good time watching Legend of the Hidden Temple.

It changed with season 3, which started showing in 2001, three years after the show was originally ended.

Season 1 was only 13 episodes, whereas Season 2 was a whopping 39. I'm wondering if they intend to chop up the second season into separate volumes. Three sets of 13 wouldn't surprise me.

By god, they'd better put Ego Trip on DVD, as well. The series isn't complete without it. We'll obviously never get to see Dexter's Rude Removal, though, which makes me really really really sad. :(

fuck yes, Hidden Temple!

I was just taking about how much I wish they'd have Dexter's Lab come out on DVD this past Monday...

I guess it would be too much to hope for a blu-ray version to come out. May have to revisit my "No DVDs" policy. Courage, Dexter's lab... wasn't big on Johnny Bravo but it might be worth snagging.

im just saying the late 90s werent that far back! (back in the day is definitely not something i use to describe dexter.... original turtles cartoons? yes. mario 3 cartoons? yes. chip n dale? hell yes... dexter is newschool)

but i agree. i too grew up w/ a 20" tube and an NES/atari connected to it via coaxial that always looked like ass, no matter how much you would wiggle the wire.

as for legends of the hidden temple, is that the one with the talking rock shaped as a head? that guy always struck me as a pedophile.

lol, it gets announced exactly when I delete the episodes off my computer to make space for more steam games. good timing.

CN's current line-up is pretty awesome, btw. And it could get much better with the new shows coming out.

I've heard good things about chowder and I thought Ben 10 to be a fresh idea for a superhero cartoon. However, the live action shows and the cartoons about live action shows (total drama island anyone?) lack the entertainment of the old shows.

Nothing will ever be as good as old-school Nickelodeon...

chowder is definitely worth checking out, and skip total drama island it sucks IMO

Whoa! Hold it right there. Current CN has two shows (Flapjack and Adventure Time) that put many of the older CN shows to shame. Dexter's Laboratory is about the only classic CN show that lives up to my memories of it. Most of the other stuff from classic CN is only being held in such high regard because of the nostalgia factor.

Anyways, I'll definitely pick up any and all Dexter's Lab sets. This show really is still a gem.

If you're referring to the cartoons of classic Nick, I've got to be honest here and mention that they really aren't funny per se. I'm a huge Nickelodeon nerd (I'm 23 and still watch it) and I own bootleg DVDs of all the cartoons and live action series from my childhood in the early 90s. The cartoons are still good, but they don't offer much in terms of humor (aside from Rocko's Modern Life). They're just kind of... there. Doug and Rugrats were enjoyable to watch but they always had some sort of underlying message which diluted the overall humor. A lot of the reverence that comes from kids of the 90s is just nostalgia. We're so quick to bash the cartoons of today and say that classic Nick was better when a lot of it really wasn't.

The best show from classic Nick that still holds up to this day (even with kids) is Pete and Pete. That will forever be the best kid's show ever created. That's not just nostalgia talking, its seriously a fantastic show. I let my friend borrow my bootlegs a few years back and his kid brother (8 years old) wound up enjoying the hell out of it.

Pete and Pete is easily one of the greatest Nick shows of all time. Doomstink - check out "Strangers With Candy." It feels like a more adult P&P, and was even filmed in the same school.

I think Doug and Rugrats had great humor, and easily stand the test of time (assuming you only include the first few seasons of Rugrats). Ren and Stimpy is timeless. Rocko is great. Real Monsters even is good. You're never going to get another Nick centric lineup that will ever come close to that, even if Spongebob is/was amazing in its heyday. And Invader Zim is just....wow. Nothing will ever match Invader Zim.

CN's lineup never measured up in my opinion at the time. I can watch them now and appreciate them a bit more, but for the most part, they felt very low budget. Today's CN shows are lacking, but the good ones are amazing. Do not attempt to tell me Adventure Time isn't the best cartoon on TV right now, and Flapjack was the same at one point (since it seems to be going down hill). Chowder's first season was really good, and then it seemed to go downhill fast.

Anyway, more awesome cartoons on DVD will always get my endorsement. This year brought me Daria. That alone will last me for decades.

^ you can tell from my sig that I agree haha. For my favorite non-action cartoon there is a blurred tie between Courage the Cowardly Dog and Invader Zim. I've always loved these incredibly strange shows.
i just want omelette du fromage. Is that in season 1?
LOL I remember:bouncy: that episode!

Flapjack is only going down hill because a lot of the key players from Flapjack left for Adventure Time. I still think Flapjack is enjoyable, but no where near as enjoyable as it was when Pendleton Ward was still working on it. "Gone Wishin'" and "Kid Nickels" are two of my favorite episodes of any cartoon ever and they were both penned by Pendleton Ward (creator of Adventure Time).

I am in total agreement with you that Adventure Time is the best cartoon on TV. It's the only show that can coerce a number of consecutive belly laughs out of me.

Why is it that you are not watching Flapjack or Adventure Time? Flapjack is loaded with disturbing/creepy/akward moments, and Adventure Time is just completely non-conventional. I'd suggest picking up Volume 1 of Flapjack on DVD. I'm sure you'll enjoy it (and it will likely make you change your views of the current CN lineup). If you don't want to spend any money and want to see one of these two shows now, the pilot of Adventure Time is all over youtube:

Is Gone Wishin the one with the Mermaid Tears? If you watch that and can't enjoy it, there is something WRONG with you. It's THE perfect blend of hilarity, weirdness, and outright terror.

I didn't know Pendleton Ward worked on Flapjack. I think it's funny to see original Spongebob alum running around on Flapjack/Adventure Time.

Mostly, when I watch Adventure Time, I'm constantly smiling.

My best Pete & Pete memories are when little Pete dug a tunnel to somewhere (can't remember) with a statue of liberty, and the orange shake episode or whatever... fuck I love that... I never got into Invader Zim, really, nor Spongebob. I do agree that there was a golden age of Nickelodeon, with Rugrats, Ahh! Real Monsters, The Angry Beavers, Doug, Rocko, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Pete & Pete, Wild & Crazy Kids, Double Dare, Salute Your Shorts... I enjoyed Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Lab and a few others from that time, but now all I really can swallow on Cartoon Network is The Clone Wars... A little Adult Swim here and there, but that's about it. I still think Eek! Stravaganza is the best cartoon ever, from what I remember...

I always got a kick out of Cow and Chicken's parents.

Dad> Start your day off LIKE A MAN, just like Momma!

Whoever decided to just show their feet doing shit was a genius. And drunk. Or high.

oh my god that was unbearable (adventure time). are you guys all watching this high or something? i couldnt get more than 4 minutes into it. its just.... shit. sorry.

[obviously] i love Invader Zim, but that aside, a lot of the shows mentioned in this thread are seriously childish. Some were cool to grow up with, others are subpar, but if you guys are in your 20s+ and watching Adventure Time, i have to call you potheads or retards. sue me.

I'm neither a pothead nor retarded. I just enjoy quirky, creative, colorful animation. The pilot on Youtube isn't completely representational of the actual show, but if you didn't like that, I'm 100% sure you wouldn't like the real show. Cartoons are always very subjective. I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't think Invader Zim is as great as it is hyped up to be. I also never understood Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Also, if you're going to bring age into this, you are probably on the wrong thread. Saying certain cartoons are only okay for certain ages is as stupid as saying video games and comic books are only for kids. I enjoy stuff like Adventure Time because the humor is inventive (they manage to evoke humor through the use of facial expressions and movements) and it isn't tied to situational comedy like "adult" shows.

Gosh, and to think everyone calls Invader Zim fans depressed emo asshole dipshit gothtards.

I haven't seen this mentioned, but Netflix watch instantly has a few older cartoons.

Some notables : Rugrats, Invader Zim, Beavis and Butthead, Hey Arnold! , Rocko's Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, Angry Beavers (not the porn), and Aaahhh!!! Real Monsters.

Basically, it looks like MTV and Nickelodeon have made a deal with Netflix. Now if only Cartoon Network would follow suit.

And give us some of those old crappy game shows, Nick. I'm sure they would give us a good laugh.

Nick Arcade anyone?
Nick Arcade anyone?
Man, I was retarded when I watched that show as a kid. I actually thought they were able to put people into a video game at the end. I had no idea what a blue screen was...

Great show, though. It was available on Nick GaS for the longest time until they finally pulled that station off the air.

Thanks for the links! Pretty good actually, it is just the pilot but I LOL'd at the Abraham Lincoln part. I had actually seen the commercial for Adventure time in like January before it came out and was interested by the art style.

Well, it looks like the members of the Academy must be "retarded, or potheads", as both Adventure Time and Flapjack are nominated for an emmy.

I realize this has nothing to do with the original topic, but I had to throw that back at the previous poster.

The only sad part about his comments is the fact that he's robbing himself of so much joy by writing off adventure time as being too childish. It's the best cartoon on tv in a time when tv's having a cartoon renaissance.

I think Chowder and Flapjack are great but I just don't get the same appeal from Adventure Time. These new live action CN shows I still think don't belong on a channel called Cartoon Netowork, but maybe it's some kind of irony.

I miss this show! I was not even aware of the Hall of Fame set until now. Thanks OP! I will definitely check this out when it is released.
