Did people really used to talk like that?

Ever watch movies or TV shows from the early-to-mid part of the 20th Century, and wonder, "Did people really used to talk like that?" I've heard many accents from back then that I've never heard in real life. I know of the mid-Atlantic accent, but what about others?

Most of the accents I've heard in movies that were supposed to take place in older times sounded primiarily English to me.

That works as an example. A very early one too, looks like the beginning of sound in movies. I think up to the early 60s I heard strange accents in movies.
