Diddy Kong Racing has been altered for the DS

Its been known since this game was announced that there would be some significant changes. I dont care about losing the bananas speed boost if the vehicles instead start out at maximun speed instead. I think we need to wait and see what theyve done when the game is released before we start to shit on it.

Oh this is just a port? Here and I thought this was going to be a new game. It would have been nice to have actually seen any previews on this game.

Nintendo Power did a pretty in-depth feature last month, and they mentioned all of this. The game still looks awesome to me. Bananas and silver coin challenges were not what made this game fun...what made it fun was the racing, the multiple vehicles (and how well each worked), the variety of stages, the adventure aspect of unlocking/finding new courses, and for the DS we also get online multiplayer.

This game will turn out fine.

"Magic Carpet Rides"? Like Steppenwolf?

They need to make the CPU controlled characters cheat less, then I'll buy it. It's about 10X worse than MarioKart in that regard(the N64 version).

I never played the original and that video makes it look pretty nice. My gf wanted it just from the box and name, but I think it's going to turn out well and actually be worth it.

Shit, I'd like an actual all-new, original version than a friggin' port. But my Mariok Kart DS copy has been mine (and 99% of other DS owners) only racing game for awhile and I have easily spent over a hundred hours in that one so I might check this out (as the N64 original kicked ass).

Wait just a cotton pickin minute (I've been saying this alot lately, its annoying my wife so I have to now annoy you guys)... I didn't see Conker on the player select screen. Could Microsoft be the reason, or perhaps he's an unlockable?

The DK characters belong to Nintendo and Conker belongs to Rare, so dont expect Conker in this one.

This is lame because I always picked Conker in the original.

Even though Rare is making the game, MS owns the rights to Conker, Banjo, and all those other properities, and they don't want their characters in a Nintendo game, since I guess they are trying to make people think Conker = Microsoft.

Realistically, Conker / Banjo COULD be in this one, but I guess MS just dosen't want to give permission. Instead of Conker and Banjo, we are getting Dixie Kong and Tiny Kong, and 2 other unconfirmed characters. Since this thread reeks of pessisimism, here is what Diddy Kong Racing DS is adding:

* 8-player single-card multiplayer (DS download play), 8-player multi-card multiplayer and 8-player Wi-Fi play [3]
* Touch-screen and microphone compatible
* Some characters in newly playable form
* Remodelled and retextured tracks
* Fully custom-made vehicles
* New modes, weapons and challenges
* Create your own tracks (TT's Wish Races)

There are also new levels, and the levels there are have been remodelled and retextured, as noted above, and apparently the frame rate has been upped as well.

I will *gladly* lose the bananas and silver coin challenges for all the stuff they are adding.

The prop spinning thing at the beginning of the video has me questioning how the controls work. Is it going to be stylus and D-pad? I really hope not. I want controls like MKDS.

Wow this game brings back memories. I'll have to get it for sure.
who the hell is Tiny Kong??
The Dixie Kong clone from DK64.

I still kinda want this game, but I think I'm gonna wait for reviews and impressions before buying it.

Nice with all that they are adding I might still pick this one up.

Cranky Kong states on Tiny – ‘‘"I thought this was Dixie Kong until she told me that she is Dixie's younger sister. Bah, kids these days all look alike! You'll probably recognize Dixie's trademark hair spin technique, but Tiny can also shrink in size--although I reckon that one's nothing more than a marketing gimmick and won't even be in the game!"

:rofl:
As much as I disapprove of the extended Kong family, Cranky Kong rarely fails to amuse me.
Cranky Kong was there from the beginning, literally. I really hope he is one of the playable characters. He's awesome.

Thanks for the article, ma. The magic carpet stuff makes me want to vomit. FIRST-PERSON?!!?!?!?!?! :puke:

I also don't like how you have to spin the wheels and BLOW for the hovercraft for a speed boost at the start of the race. And why did they change the AWESOME boss battles?!?!?!

I might pick this game up if I can get a deal on it (under $20 new). I rented the N64 version and thought it was ok but didn't see the need to buy it because I thought Mario Kart 64 was way better. I guess it will be the same on the DS because Mario Kart DS is one of the best games I have played in a few years.

I'm not a fan of N64 ports, but 8 player single card multi-player does sound pretty sweet. I'll have to convince one of my cousins with a DS to pick this up. :mrgreen:

Is it known if the non-card having DS players will get a crappy racer (like in Mario Kart) or if it will be a racer (generic or otherwise) of equal skill to the normal ones? Very lame of MK to make it so you have to buy the game to get a competitive racer in multi-player. The Shy Guy racer is crappier than the other ones, right?

Just looked at the Gamestop page for it. Thankfully Gamestop decided to charge us their premiere DS titles surcharge of $5 again. I was worried we might actually get it for the same price as the other stores. Looks like I'll be getting this at Best Buy...

How could you possibly be upset? By charging you $5 extra they're doing you a favor, in fact! In most locations you get the game an extra day after release, thereby keeping money on your credit card or in your bank for an extra 24 hours just in case any bills come along.

Now that's $5 I put my trust in. It's those people who have titles on the shelves on the day of release I'm wary of. Wanting my money like that...

It was

SARCASM :lol:
Umm, I think Kapwanil was being sarcastic too...
Yup. I've really got to work on the internet sarcasm skills, to be fair. It never ends up being extreme enough or noticeable without a giveaway emoticon like ;).

Oh well. Next time, Gadget, next time.

As to the topic on-hand, what do you mean the boss fights were changed?!

Crazytalk, read the Wired preview I linked to on the first page of this topic.

I think I'll pick this one up. I was a fan of the N64 game back in the day. I just hope the game doesn't have something like snaking. Snaking ruined the online experience of MKDS for me....

Well since this has wi-fi, guess I'll pick it up eventually.

Question is when? Mario Kart already offers supperior wi-fi from what I'm reading, but "Snaking" has been so over used I feel like im getting pwned everytime since I haven't been playing it 24/7 to get the practice down pact.

I'll be waiting for the reviews and prolly a price drop, then pick it up around April or May... maybe earlier depending on the price and reviews.

It sounds like the WiFi features are much more robust than MKDS. 6 player online races, a "buddy" system that lets you see what your friends are doing (online, offline, in a race, waiting, etc.). You are also notified when if a friend is setting up a race and can join that race by just clicking on their name.

The actual gameplay may be less exciting than MKDS, but it sounds like they are getting the online part right.

Hmm...

The original is by far my favorite racing game ever. At least from this video, the graphics in this version look terrible by comparison-but I'd rather they showed the adventure mode and started in the hub. The level that was picked never looked that great to begin with, so hard to say.

Using the touch screen and microphone sounds stupid at best...I can see why they did it, but I'm sorry, I feel stupid blowing on my DS, even when I'm alone.

The "magic carpet" thing sounds potentially annoying, and the boss battles...well, I actually remember fighting the triceratops and enjoying it, and what they've done sounds really weird. It could be great, or really stupid.

Sounds like a rental for me I guess. No analog control may hurt it too...it just doesn't look like it's going to match up. Plus it hurts that the original was one of the best looking (and one of the few non-blury) N64 games.

And what's with the Wired guy and his "Rare was never very good at making video games"!?! I'm not a Rare fanboi. I don't think everything they do is gold, but even games of theirs I don't like (Kameo) are still probably at least average compared to other games in general.

EDIT: And I assume Rare made this version? Or did Nintendo?

If Rare...I wonder if they put less work into the graphics, etc. since they're owned by Microsoft...

Take it from someone who just played it less than ten minutes ago, the graphics are pretty much the same for both versions, just clearer on DS. Guess Nostalgia has that affect on people.

Rare did it. The one thing I'm wary about is changing the boss fights. Those were fucking awesome. And they screwed them up. I think I will wait and see on it.

I always used Pipsy as she won me the most races. Now that bananas are gone I will have to learn it all over again.

I got my hand on a copy of this this afternoon, although I am not at liberty to divulge how :ziplip:. I'll leave impressions later.

But I am. The user more than likely got it from EB/GS. They got their copies in already. Shame I no longer work for EB/GS.

so is the multiplayer any good? is this worth a buy?

i played the n64 version like once at a friends house but didnt pay much attention to it in the n64 days since i had my mario kart 64 :D
