I remember someone else was wondering about this and made a topic about it( I did a quick search and couldn't find it). I guess there is a Smooth surface disc and a rough textured disc. In the other thread the consenus was that it was just different amounts of paint, but I think this was incorrect. This is for Star Ocean: Second Story by the way.

I'm looking at 2 different disc 1's, 1 is smoother and 1 is rougher, What I found odd however, is that on the smoother one all of the writing (Star Ocean, Sony, ESRB, ect...) is done in a reflective silver paint. On the other disc all the writing is in White, not silver. Also the center of of the one with the silver paint is black, the other one has the same pattern as is found on the rest of the disc.

I'm wondering if something is up with the discs? Or where there 2 printings? Could anyone who bought their Star Ocean new, please check and see which one they have?

I know there was already a topic on this, but the search function still appears to be screwy, so my search turned up nothing. I checked a couple forums also, but found nothing.
Mine has the rougher surface with white paint, and the same design as the rest of the disc in the center.
Did you buy it new?
Yup, bought it new and sealed about 5 months ago.
Hmm interesting. What about your Disc 2? Both of mine are smooth with silver paint.
My disc 2 is rough with white paint and the same patern as the rest of the disc in the center.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!

So at least 1 person has confirmed that the rough version is legit.

Anyone else care to help out? I'm really curious if there are 2 legit versions, or if the smooth one is somehow bootlegged or something.

Glad I could help. Here's some pics for reference.
jimbodan, if his version is legit, (the rough one), could one of yours be a bootleg?
Quite possibly :(

That's why I'd like to see if anyone bought the smooth copy new

thanks for the link! I didn't even think to check the old school forum, I did a search got nothing, then checked the deal discusion and ps2 forum.

I guess it's too late to post this question there, plus mine is a little bit different, it's not just the textures, but the actual writing.

in that other thread, you said you had a smooth copy and bought yours new? Did it have the silver or white text? and was the center black?

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about:

Both of my Discs 2's, look like the Disc 1 on the left, smooth silver paint black center.

If the bottom of the disc is black then it isn't a bootleg. As far as I know, they don't make bootlegs with black bottomed discs.

The bottoms on all my star ocean discs are black
perhaps it's the difference between a DVD and a CD?
PS1 can't read DVDs if thats what you meant.

I just searched "Star Ocean discs" in the Google search and it was the first thing that came up. I don't have mine anymore, I gave it to a friend. If I remember correctly, mine looked like yours, the left one in your picture.

Didn't even think to use the Google search, I've always used the other search.

Maybe there were indeed 2 printings? Because from all accounts if it's black bottom and plays in a un-modded PS2 it isn't bootleg

It looks like it's just two separate printings, it's the only thing that would account for the different piant jobs.

It bothers me that I don't know the reasoning for the difference. If it had gone GH I could understand. :?

That's all I can of too.

I'm with you there, I wish they would have just used 1 design for both printings, if indeed that's what the difference is.

I highly doubt it, but is there any chance that one copy was manufactured after Square and Enix merged?

Different printings by different cd manufacturers happen all the time. There are differences when one has certain capabilities that the other doesn't have, so its slightly different. For example, some Sega games, like Lunar Silver Star, had their initial run with no artwork on the center ring, because Sega printed them and didn't have that capability, but in later printings by the publisher they did. Its just a different run of cd's by a different manufacturer, thats all.

No, that was long after this game but I'm pretty sure it's a case of two different printings. It's not that uncommon for little things to change in between printings.

Edit: Also, I can say with 100% certainity that the "rough & white print" one isn't a bootleg. Unless TRU was selling factory sealed bootlegs way back when and nobody knew about it.

I think it's just a matter of someone in marketing going "We need more visible art on the cover of the game!" Either that or they just simply switched to different ink at some point. There are a lot of different reasons why it could happen.

I bought Star Ocean: Second Story the day it came out (as I was working for EB at the time) and my discs are of the smooth/silver variety. That printing is 100% legit.
