Dimebag Darrell (formerly) of Pantera MURDERED!

I've read personal reports from people near the scene and near the building that say Vinnie's gone.
Links? I'm not trying to call you a liar, I just want to read them as well.
Just go to pantera boards, metal sludge, etc.

Gerald Caudill told WSYX the gunman shot the guitarist at least four times.

"I was up close to the stage and I just saw some guy run up on the side of the stage and I heard some shots and I saw (drummer) Vinnie Paul and somebody jumped on top of Vinnie, and the guy just stayed around the stage and started shooting other people," Caudill said.

The Pantera boards are down.

i was up close to the stage on the side where DBD was playing.... then i saw the guy jump out of the crwod onto the stage... he was yelling something about how "you broke up pantera.... you ruined my life.... what about phil??? he needs heroin money..."

I'm glad the killer is dead. I'd love to get my hands on him.

Now someone's saying it was the singer.

Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night.

According to Columbus NBC affiliate NBC4, Dimebag — real

name Darrell Abbott — was among the fatalities resulting from the incident, which occurred during a Damageplan performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus. Authorities did not release the names of any of the other fatalities to NBC4. Columbus police told MTV News that a total of four people were killed and two wounded, and that the death toll included the assailant.

One witness told the NBC affiliate that a man jumped onto the stage during the first song of the band's set and began firing a gun. According to the witness, the man fired several shots at the band before being tackled by club security. One of the survivors is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another is in fair condition.

"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, public information officer, told MTV News.

"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this, ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."

As news of Dimebag's bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.

"I'm speechless," friend and Rob Zombie/Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson said. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a f---ing legend and this is total bull----."

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman, and former Damageplan tour partner, Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

I hope it was Phil. I swear to god I hope it was. He broke up Pantera. Not Dimebag. This is beyond bullshit. This shouldn't have happened to a legend ike Dimebag.

I'm sure whatever problems Phil had with Dimebag can be put aside at this point... I mean there was even talk of a reunion.

I'll bet Phil's a lot more upset than you think.

I doubt it. I don't think they would ever get back together. He didn't want anything to do with Dimebag at all.

Geez .. I keep reading all the news popping in, and it just steams me. Not because it's a celebrity death or anything .. but the nerve of someone, just running out and shooting people. I can't believe it. What kind of mindstate do you have to be in to do that?

What a waste. It makes me so fucking pissed.

Vinnie Paul is alive.

Scoop of the Columbus, Ohio radio station The Blitz 99.7 FM has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul was uninjured in the shooting incident at a Columbus nightclub which resulted in the death of Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell. According to Scoop, who attended the concert and briefly saw Vinnie following the incident, Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred.

A friend of Scoop's, Kevin Minerd, who also attended the concert, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the gunman entered the stage from the left side and walked over to the right side where Dimebag was standing before grabbing the guitarist and pumping several bullets into him. Additional shots were fired, although it's presently unclear which other member of DAMAGEPLAN, if any, was killed in the incident.

As news of Dimebag's (born Darrell Lance Abbott in Dallas, Texas on August 20, 1966) bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.

"I'm speechless," friend and ROB ZOMBIE/OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson told MTV. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a fucking legend and this is total bullshit."

Good to hear.

It's starting to sink in, the impact this is going to have in my town.

DBD was a big laughing barrel of fun and energy. The guy was never angry about anything. He was always laughing, he was always trying to have a good time. When we would see him at the supermarket, he'd be pushing two carts. One would be filled with steaks and chips and snacks. The other cart: booze. More often than not, he'd be wearing house slippers (in his defense, it was usually pretty late, he never did his shopping in the daytime).

I'm gonna try to drive by his house tomorrow and see how things look. I wonder if it still looks the same as when I last saw it. For the longest time, there were these huge claws sticking up out of the roof. It was how you could tell it was their's. If people wanted to find the house, you'd say "find the one with claws."

It's somewhat of a relief to hear Vinnie Paul is alive, but man, what a senseless act. It's a shame we'll never know what this psychotic guy was thinking. Hopefully more answers will surface.
Sorry about that, too much Jagermeister.
The mourning process has already begun for some I see.

The best idea I got so far is that The band started playing "Breathing new life", 1 minute into the song a guy wearing a hood and hockey jersey came on stage from the side, started yelling at Dimebag for breaking up Pantera, grabbed him by the throat shot him twice in the head, Dimebag fell and the guy kept shooting. Then he turned around and shot some more people. A guitar technician named Aaron who works at the club was killed. Then a cop came and blew off the guy's face with a shotgun.

I've heard this report from several places. I'm glad the sick fuck got his whole fucking face blown off.

"Without going into the gory details of the event he said that Dime was shot 7 times but was probably gone by time the second shot hit him."

Sick.

Well said. It makes you wonder what would motivate this person.

Honestly, I, for one, read the article Scorch posted, and thought to myself, "meh, another dead racist." However, some people have mentioned the severe grudge between Phil and the other members of Pantera; I know Phil is an outright racist junkie fuck, but I always just assumed that the rest of the band was like that.

I hope I'm wrong; I'll never feel sorry for a dead racist, no matter the cause. But, at the moment, I can certainly feel nothing but pity for those guys.

The ironic thing about metal is the contrast in imagery and ideology; most metal musicians are dark, dirty, ugly, and basically unsavory in every way (hold the flames, I'm getting to something); despite the bad rep metal gets for being an "agent of satan," (or whatever it may be described as, it's early), only those creepy nordic sword-metal types are like that. American metal musicians, for the most part and with very few exceptions, seem to just be into drinking, partying, and having a good fucking time. Of the metal musicians I've met, most of them are the most timid people I've ever met (though that may not be the case after half a fifth of Evan Williams or some similarly shitty whisky). I hope this is not some kind of nonsensical "religious purity" matter leading to this; knowing Ohio, however, makes me think of it as a possibility.

Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred.

That is, without a doubt, the absolute saddest thing I've read in a long time.

myke.

why do i feel that the shooters family will now try to sue the police for killing him. They will give some bullshit about how they could of shot him in the leg or something and they didnt have to kill him.. Funny how people will try to defend and like they are the victim when they just killed what 6 or more people.

This is some shitty news to wake up to. I heard Howard talking about it on my way to work and just read this entire thread. Pantera was the first real concert that I went to back in 1992/1993ish when they opened for Skid Row (I went to a shitty Skid Row show just to See Pantera). Vulgar Display of Power is my favorite album of theres looks like I gotta pull it and Cowboys from Hell out to night and have a few drinks myself.....
I don't think I've heard of Pantera. What kind of music and what good songs were there?
Shows your age.....LOUD metal....they were GREAT!

They were supposed to get back together too :(

This is F'd up. Pantera was huge when I was in high school. I can't believe that something like this could happen or what could drive someone to commit such a terrible act. This is just awful...

sux loved pantera now they will be more infamous

they were the shit back when i actually bought cd's
i bought far beyond driven in 1994 in maryland
type of band where i remember when and where i was when i got the cd
think that was their 3rd, the 2nd was the best with that walk on song

That is exactly why handguns should be illegal.

You can't hunt, the only thing they are good for is murder. You can defend yourself with mace, which conveniently leaves the guy alive so you can sue him.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140955,00.html

Columbus police department spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio identified three of the victims of Wednesday's shooting as Abbott, guitarist with the heavy metal rock band Damageplan (search), and two other men, Nathan Bray and Erin Halk.

Mercurio later identified the gunman as 25-year-old Nathan Gale. She had no comment on a possible motive.

Damageplan had just begun their first song at the Alrosa Villa (search) when Gale opened fire, first targeting Abbott, shooting him multiple times at point-blank range, a witness said.

Abbott, 38, one of metal's top guitarists, and his brother, Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, were original members of Grammy-nominated thrash rock pioneers Pantera (search), one of the most popular metal bands of the early 1990s.

The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said he was standing about 30 feet away from the stage when he noticed a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hockey jersey walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee.

Just thought I would share this. One of my prized posessions. One of their setlists and some picks i got at a concert. Damn... I don't even know what to say...

R.I.P. man.

I seriously started weeping this morning after I dropped my sister off at school. I turned on the radio, and the first thing I hear is one of Dime's close friends talking about how surreal the night has been and how upset Vinnie is. I just broke down, I couldn't help it.

I've never cried about a celebrity before. But this is different. This guy was our neighbor. He was a good guy. He was a funny guy. Every cop in this town has a Dime story. This is going to be a very long day. The fact that the sun is shining is making this so much harder to bear. Don't ask me why, but when I got up this morning and saw the sun shining, it made me think of Darrell. What I wouldn't give to be able to talk to Vinnie. I can't imagine my life without my sister. Sad day for this town.

This is the worst news I've heard in a while. He didn't deserve this, I'm glad that the police shot the guy dead that killed Dimebag. It servers that asshole right.

Thank god the shaq fu comments stopped. That has to be the dumbest thing I ever read on the internet. RIP to everyone involved in this, except the murderer.

This really sucks. 'Vulgar Display of Power' is a classic metal album.

I met 'Dimebag' one Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Really cool guy. This is a shame and a loss. Guy was really talented.

R.I.P.
