Diploma Frames?

I finally graduated and earned my first college degree. I want to hurry and get it matted and framed so I don't have to worry about it getting wrinkled, lost under piles of papers/book, liquid spilled on it, spontaneously combusted, or otherwise destroyed.

Does anyone know of any deals or recommendations based on personal experience of a place that I can order the whole shebang from?

Depending on how cheapass you are, Target has some nice document frames for under $50. I found a nice wooden frame with a matte that holds my Masters diploma. I think mine was like $30.
They also have some frames with an area to hang your tassle if you're into that.
These aren't those Walmart $9.99 frames either. They are actually quite nice and look as good as the $200 frames that you school no doubt will try to sell you. Hit up your local Target and check it out.
This is kind of an example of what I mean (not sure why this has a photo in it, since it's listed as a document frame). I guess it just comes with different mattes so you can use a photo or just remove the mattes for a document.

Well, the Target frame probably won't be the same size as your diploma since diploma's come in an irregular size. However, you should be able to find something close to what you're looking for at Target, or even Aaron Brothers when they have their sales.

I bought my frame and matting from the university book store and it cost $120. Looks beautiful and I'm happy with it.

I got a frame for my college degree at wal-mart for $20 that works fine. Try a craft store like Michaels. They do custom framing and have a wide selection or frames in stoer and are always doing sales.

first off, congrats, i just graduated too, but i was a dumbass and got my frame on the spot and it cost me fucking $85..and i saw much nicer ones in target..target..i saw like $20-$50 frames all with different looks

I would have never thought to check somewhere like Target. I'll drop by there tomorrow. Thanks.

My brother got his framed at Michaels, but he was telling me that it was pretty expensive. I'm trying to find some cheaper options before jumping into that.

$85? The ones that my school is trying to sell me are all $130-ish and up. The cheapest one I found online was $110+shipping, but it had the name of the school and the seal.

The only reason I appreciate my school's "official" diploma frame is that its matted to fit the diploma exactly and there is also a matted section for my tassel.

There's also the school seal, and it's made from real cherry wood.

It's something to think about, but you can always upgrade your frame when you have the money to spare.

I'd definitely check out Target. I wanted something more modern-looking (and cheap) for my certification certificate. I found this one for

Most college diplomas are the standard 8.5 x 11", however some schools will print their Ph.D. or M.S. diplomas on 11 x 13". The key is to get one that is 8.5 x 11, but has a matte so the diploma looks bigger than it is.

I measured mine and it seemed more like it was 11 x 14"

Good thread, as I was looking to get one of these too.

Though, we don't get our diplomas for another two to three months. :whistle2:(

I do custom framing so I should give you a warning. Depending upon how serious you are about preserving your diploma you should at least get a frame that allows you to mat it. Having things touching the glass tends to destroy things over time (mainly with photos). If you are really serious about it look for a frame with acid free mounting, acid free backing, and UV glass. And of course use water adhesive acid free mounting tabs.

Unfortunately getting all of that tends to leave you with only one option of custom framing. And no matter how hard you try that will always end up being expensive.

You spent how much time and money getting that piece of paper (probably the most expensive piece of paper you'll ever buy), and you're going to cheapass the last inch? Give me a break... :)

Seriously, if you're serious about getting your degree framed, I'd take the advice of probablysober to heart and get it done properly with custom framing and all the proper mountings (acid free, UV glass, etc). Getting a diploma replaced by your school because your cheap $10 Target frame ruined it (or more accurately failed to properly preserve it) will probably cost more in the long run than just getting it framed properly the first time.

Also, maybe it's just me but all the pre-fab diploma frames I have ever seen are HORRENDOUSLY cheesy and ugly. A custom framing job will allow you to get custom made something you like, which you will be actually proud to put on your wall.

My wife gets all her diplomas custom framed at Michaels. They have a 50% off coupon in flyers on a regular basis, or just ask for one in the store and they'll often give you the discount even if there isn't one currently available.

Well, if she does this regularly, give me an estimate.

I checked their flyer for this week, it just had a buy 1 custom framing, get 1 free.
Sort of off topic, but if you double major do you get multiple diplomas?
It might depend on the school, but I had a friend who did computer and electrical engineering and got two diplomas. Also, from the amount of double diploma frames I found, I assume it's standard practice.

She spends about $80 and gets very nice professional frames. How much it will cost you depends entirely on how cheap you want to be versus how nice you want it to look. If it's a DeVry diploma you're probably looking at $30 with the 50% off coupons. If you just got a doctorate at MIT or Harvard, expect to pay $150 or more for an appropriate frame.

I recommend you go talk to them to see what they have to offer at the custom framing desk. That part is free.

I've had copious amount of luck finding frames, it's the decision part that I'm having trouble with.

At first I going to get something from Target just to hold it for a few months. But then, I talked to my parents and they said don't worry about it, they'll take care of it over the weekend (since I'm visiting them for a family party).

Then, I talked to my brother about it, and mentioned that I found a nice official one online (https://www.diplomadisplay.com/wvu9/itemdetail.aspx?OfferProdId=1985&group=11). He told me that it would be best to get it custom framed because it would be difficult to get it straight in the frame and such.

And, now the last couple people in this thread bringing all this acid free stuff to my attention makes me think that I should just go to Michaels.
