I'm on the fence on these two games and I have been for a while. Since these games are still available and will likely skyrocket in price when they're out of print for good (because I know Disagaea's been reprinted), are they really games that I must own? I don't have much experience with turn based strategy apart from Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, and Metal Gear Acid... so how are the storylines in these games and are they definitely worth buying, or are they just games that are pretty good, but not really necessary?

I played both the growlansers in generations, and I have to say overall, it is skippable.

The story was so-so, textbook stuff. The ends to both were sub-par. And the battle system was broke.

I mean, its OK, I dont regret playing them, but for someone on the fence, I would say there are better things you can focus on.

Yes to Disgaea, but I dont see either getting rare (again)

Growlanser Generations was just an Ok game. Both Growlanser games seem to move a very slow pace and combat is kinda dull. Overall I had more fun with Disgaea.

Never played Growlanser.
However, Disgaea was really fun even though I had to cheat to finish up the optional levels. I just didn't feel like spending 10 hours or so just leveling up my characters.

Disgaea is a great game both combat and story wise.

Growlanser is fun but at times it feels limited by the combat system, the real time play tends to make certain characters and abilities nearly worthless while making other extremely overpowered.

the Growlansers are a solid game. However I consider Disgaea to be one of the best RPG this generation, along with shadow hearts. It has a great story and gameplay and soundtrack. Only the graphics can be a bit dated.

Growlanser is great if you're into the Japanese anime style/sense of humor and older Playstation style RPG's like Final Fantasy Tactics or Arc the Lad, etc. Combat is really fun like sort of an active/turn based system similar to Chrono Trigger (and older Squaresoft games) and Arc the Lad Twilight of Spirits.

Graphics not really flashy (clean, but more similar to orig Playstation graphics/effects), but good and deep story, lots of spoken dialogue which I always like. And the soundtrack is really good. I listen to the soundtrack CD and I have some favorite tracks. Game changes depending on your choices and there is like 8 possible endings for each character (for Growlanser 2). Also if you have the dance mat, you can use it with Growlanser 3 when you do magic spells, DDR style!

How about you decide to buy them because they are GOOD GAMES, and not because they might make you money in the future. Both are very good games, Disgaea could easily entertain you for 80 hours, and both Growlanser games have excellent character customization, and a battle system I liken as a mix between Shining Force and Grandia.

Well said. Don't let the price values cloud your enjoyment.

If you want the collectors aspect they are both good. Disgaea 2 is coming out and Working Designs who published Growlanser is now out of business. So there probably won't be a re-print of Growlanser. So if you can afford it get both?

so if one isn't good at Strategy-RPGs, Disgaea is still enjoyable?

I've seen Disgaea around a bunch, but I am in the same spot as the OP, since I don't play that many Strategy-RPGs.

Disgaea was the first strategy rpg I had ever played. I was a total noob and it was an incredible experience. Im now firmly hooked on the genre. Disgaea got me to finally go play Final Fantasy Tactics. Now Im playing La Pucelle, and I have Phantom Brave and Makai in my 'get to' pile. =D

Easy enough to just pick up and start playing, but it gets soo deep that you can be 50 hours into your save and just beginning to discover how deep the game is.
The replay value is almost endless. Look at it this way... when I beat the story mode of the game for the first time, I was around level 80 or so. But the level cap for the game is 9999!

So last night I was looking over my copy of Growlanser Gen, and I noticed that it has one of those double sided covers with alternative artwork on the other side. Its the artwork thats on the cover of the manual.

I know there was a thread about which games had that feature a while back, but I dont remember Growlanser being mentioned as one of them.
