Disgaea Portable...a PS2 port?

Ok, i know there have been a few posts on disgaea lately. However, I'm still a little confused over whether Disgaea for the PSP is a straight port of the PS2 with a few new features OR if it is a totally new game/storyline.

I saw the post for the Amazon sale of the PS2 reprint and i'm debating buying it. But, I don't want to waste my money if it's exactly the same as the PSP version, as I will be buying that game for sure.

Anyway, thanks for any input! :D

It's a straight port of the PS2 version, with ad-hoc multiplayer and extra story stuff thrown in. The missions are like a 'what if?' scenario...basically a corollary to the main story.

From what I hear, the U.S. version is almost completely new, since the story is told from Etna's point of view, and there's some stuff added. The Japanese version was a straight port, but not the U.S. one.

Bingo.

But it's not SOLELY from Etna's pov, you can still play it regularly as it was on the PS2.

That's interesting. As I mentioned in the bargain thread I have the Japanese version (which is great) but if there's a lot of new content, it might be worth getting the US version (since I've never seen the story in English).

Unlike many titles that migrate over to the system from the console, Disgaea PSP isn't a port of the PS2 game. Instead, the story of the title is actually a prequel to the original title, and takes place right after the death of King Krichevskoy. However, instead of focusing primarily upon the adventure of Laharl, the prince of the Netherworld, Disgaea PSP highlights the story of Etna this time around. Not only will players wind up waking up Laharl and helping him along in his quest, they'll also work on turning Etna into the Beauty Queen Ultimate Overlord that she's always wanted to be. In fact, if players manage to achieve this status, they'll wind up unlocking a new secret ending for the game.

I was gonna come in here with some psp jokes like 'A ps2 to psp port, hard to believe right?' or 'It comes with new features like extra long load times'

But I cant hate on Disgaea. Sounds like they're making this version different enough to warrant a purchase.

Just for the record (I know you're kidding) the Japanese version of Disgaea Portable has very reasonable loading times.

the etna mode is an addition to the main story. It is shorter than the main game, and there is no earth side quest. It is pretty much the same game except you dont use Larhal and there are are some minor difference.

So this isn't a Playstation 2 port at all?

Originally, it was announced for Japan as a port of the PlayStation 2 hit, but, for North America, NIS America has gone back to the developers for add a whole new twist to the game.

This time around, the story will focus on Etna instead of Laharl. Etna has always wanted to be the Beauty Queen Ultimate Overlord, and this time she gets her desire. Completing this will net an entirely new ending to the game, giving Disgaea veterans something to strive for.

Interesting...

The press release does say the Etna mode is an all new "chapter" though, and it also has Geo Cubes as well... sounds like it will have new cameo's from NIS games released after Disgaea.

06 GUEST APPEARANCES
YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU’LL RUN INTO
Part of the fun of NIS games is unlocking hidden characters. In Disgaea PSP,
you will see familiar faces from a number of previous titles.

I don't think they would be hinting at the secret characters already in Disgaea... I think it'll be people from Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, and prolly Disgaea 2.

This is definitely worth picking up.

It's still a port. Just with some extra stuff, I think. They wouldn't have totally remade the game for the US release.
