DLC Killed The Unlockable Star

I think achievements killed the unlockable actually. Why give the player a new character/costume/level/music player/weapon/concept art when you can just give them a trophy instead?

I think that multiplayer maps (depending on the title) and expansions (like Fable II, or Fallout 3) are often valuable... but shit like Street Fighter IV costumes (which are on the disc), and stuff like that, are a fuckin' racket.

whatever...if DLC keeps me happily playing a game I dont care. Small things like weapons, costumes, etc should be in game unlockables...but maps, vehicles, etc which can take more time/resources for the developer after the game has shipped should cost at least a little. I wish MORE DLC would come out for some games *cough* COD4 *cough* .... I love that game but I am bored with it...give me 2 more maps, 5 more guns and 5 more perks to keep me happy till MW2 and I'll happily pay another $15-$20

the only dlc ive purchased for a game was for bioshock and that was mainly to get the game pluss option since i want to go through it to get the other things i missed on my first playthough. i cant believe anyone would pay just to get shit you can unlock through gameplay though thats damn sad but im not surprised by this ever since they started making people pay for stuff in that godfather game that in the older gen versions could be unlcoked with a code i knew it was only the beginning of a sick trend.

Although the article was poorly written, I think the content is important enough that it needs to be repeated many times over. With any kind of innovation, you're going to get a dose of good and bad things. (Most) of the DLC for Oblivion and Fallout 3 has been substantial enough to get my praise. DLC for games such as SFIV and Gears of War 2 make me guffaw, however.

Dear Epic,

Don't release 3 maps for $10, which are already contained on the disc, when your online modes are completely broken.

Sincerely,

rabbitt
Holy shit, what was that $1000 dollars of DLC about?
Idolmaster and yeah, there is a shitload of DLC for that game. Surprised she didn't mention Ace Combat 6 in those graphics where there is a good couple hundred dollars in DLC

I shouldn't really say that DLC made the gaming landscape a little bit for the worse, but there are a handful of DLCs that are pretty worth every single penny.

Fallout 3 Broken Steel is a must purchase for any fans of the game, since it arguable fix the most glaring issue with the game (no after-plot play). Anchorage kinda tried to do a conversion mod-esque plan behind it, focusing more on combat, which is another good waste of $10.

GTA4 Lost and the Damned is like a conversion mod from the PC yester-years, allowing players not only a brand new campaign, but one that's a different feel from the main story line.

But like I said, I think DLCs gives a legitimate excuse for developers to release unfinished content for their games, and later charging a premium to "fix" them. Some are just plainly not worth the money, like more map-packs. Man, I remember having to download free map-packs for UT2k4 that gave not only 6+ quality maps, but a couple of new co-op missions and vechiles to boot.

But yeah, I agree with the article that DLC kinda killed the concept of cool unlockables. I mean, the only unlockables left for some games are features that should NOT be an unlockable to begin with, like the SF4 character line up, or song tracks in GH3 or Rockband that you need to play through in SP before being able to play them on MP, or Zombie Mode for CoD:WaW.

Sorry for the QQ, and really, DLC won't make me stop buying games. But dammit, I want to bitch.

Bottom line, as long as the game you buy is worth what you paid, who cares about the DLC? My personal experience is with Resident Evil 5. People bitched, moaned, and cried about the $5 Versus DLC. Who fucking cares? The base was great! It was well, well worth my $60.

I am beginning to wonder if developers see DLC as their ability to keep some profits rolling in. With used games, Gamestop can buy and resell a game (with additional profits) several times to new owners, where the developers only get the first initial sale. With the DLC (even if it's nickle/dime stuff), developers still get a piece. I'm not sure if this rationale is ever used, but I could see it.

I also have absolutely no issue with developers selling items that can be unlocked in the game. There has always been difficult things to unlock in a game, and some people did it, others couldn't. I don't see this as much different than having your friend come over to complete a difficult phase of a game that you could never do. As long as it's clearly marked, and you know what your buying, I don't see the big deal.

Yeah I agree. I think achievements have had more impact on unlockables than DLC. But it's definitely a combined effort as they can go hand in hand.

Give achievements to give that sense of accomplishment like an unlockable (though I don't care about achievements at all personally) then sell them some costumes etc. that would have been unlockable in previous generations.
