Do you think Gears Of War is overrated?

Like I've said before, Gears of War is the 360 version of Brute Force.

As I played Gears, I kept asking myself "OK, when is it gonna get REALLY good?" It was a fine game, and the graphics were incredible, but in the end, it was a fairly standard 3rd person shooter, with a couple overhyped "features" in the cover system and the active reloads.

I think it is overhyped, it's a really good game but I found myself unmotivated to play it. I was gonna beat it just for the sake of beating it but I lost my checkpoint when I played a coop game and just said screw it.
I hated the online experience because I would get bitched out for "stealing a kill." C'mon, really now, the fact that you put your crosshairs over somebody but still didn't shoot means you have some sort of ownership over it? Or how about the fact that you start screaming about how wrong I am to take your virtual pride away? Needless to say, I don't play it online very much anymore either.
I agree with Jollydwarf for the most part, good game that just got caught up in some hype. And I had more fun playing RS:V and actually was motivated to beat it.

I liked the game quite a bit but how it got Game of the Year over Oblivion is beyond me.

My only guess is that it was more fresh in people's minds over Oblivion which had been out for 8 or 9 months.
Just get ready for the "Why you gotta be hatin'/Yeah, you wish that was you, dawg" responses, RR.

Of course now that I've preemptively called them out, they'll jump on me for that and for the distinct possibility that I'm also hatin'/jealous.
I don't know to say if you covered your back or not on that one... I'll take the heat if it comes though... anything to make people realize douches do exist.

I'd say its pretty overrated. The single player is chock full of gameplay cliches like all those invisible triggers that bring enemies out or other scripted events, and they're mostly completely noticable, taking you out of the game.

Multiplayer is an unbalanced, random mess, if you ask me. Things never seem to work the same way twice, and it's incredibly frustrating playing against most people online, imo. Player matches are better, but ranked people are such assholes, and there's no excuse for not being able to go into ranked play as a team.

The game is really good and I still play it sometimes, though. The single player gets a pass for having such a great co-op system, and the multiplayer is a lot more fun with friends, it just should be a "fun" game and not a "competitive" game.
I pretty much agree with everything said here.

I'd also like to comment that the cover mechanic (which the whole game is built on) wasn't done nearly as well as Rainbow Six: Vegas (which came out around the same time). Cover controls just work so much better holding L then constantly having to press A to stick and unstick from cover. The reason they had to put it so many different ways to run from cover to cover with a press of s button was because the base cover controls weren't all that good. It was still a fun game, but it was extremely repetitive and there are much better cover-based games out there.
Wow, hit the nail right on the head for me and I wasn't even sure what I was going for.

The cover system, while novel, just feels broken. I love the "CNN Shaky Cam" when running, that is fantastic. But I can almost never get the guy to do exactly what I want him to do, at least not at a moment's notice when things get hectic. That, and the complete worthlessness of actually shooting in the 3rd person view leaves the gameplay pretty broken.

It seems that aside from graphics, Rainbow Six did everything Gears tried to do, only with polish and style. Which is odd to me since Ubisoft has been synonymous with crap shovelware for a long time in my mind.

I'll take the heat if it comes though... anything to make people realize douches do exist.

To be honest, I find "Cliffy" mildly obnoxious but ultimately innocuous. Mark Rein is the greasy one, in my opinion.

Oh well, it's all good right now. Thanks to THE Ohio State University for today's natural high! (Even if it potentially fucked-up my bracket.)
I preferred Halo, even Halo 2 over Gears of War. Overall better campaigns and much better multi-player. Still a great game for what it is though, semi-first person shooter/action.
I agree and disagree. I thought both campaigns, at least Halo 2's campaign, and GoW were about even in awesomeness. Though I might give the edge to GoW just due to the scale of the levels. Multiplayer definitely goes to H2 though. Man, for the first few weeks I was playing GoW, I was LOVING it. Then as I played more and more....I noticed the lag more and more, and noticed the host advantage more and more...and then I decided that the game was broken as hell. I still love Gears, played through the campaign 3, almost 4 times. But man, I despise the lag in Gears.

I have to say the script and the voice acting is really chessy.

example:

"DO YOU HEAR SOMETHING?"

"NO ITS JUST THE WIND!!!!!"

"WHENS THE LAST TIME THE WIND SAID HOSTILES TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

But other wise chainsawing people kicks ass

"ANYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAMMER OF DAWN N O W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
