Do you think the Gamecube will drop to $79 by year's end?

I know that this has probably already been thrown around in this forum before... but... ah, well... here we go again I suppose...

What do you guys think of the possibility of Nintendo dropping the retail price of a new Gamecube to $79 after this year's E3... or perhaps sometime later this year?

I've read varying things on exactly how much it costs to produce a Gamecube and at exactly what point Nintendo would be losing money on each one they sell... I've yet to find anything definite on the matter.

I prolbably should've already picked one up at the $99 price by now... but, guiilty as charged by being here, I'm a cheap ass... a severe one at that.
I doubt we'll see any price changes from Nintendo again unless Sony and/or Microsoft drop to $99 first.
I tend to think the same thing. $99 is an insane price already and if you look hard enough you can get an extra controller and a game with it for free - there's really no excuse not to own a GCN.

We'll probably see another bundle along the lines of the MK:DD or Metroid bundles... they'll continue to sweeten the deal!

On a related note, I've read that the Revolution will be backwards compatible with GCN games, but I wonder if it will be compatible with our beloved Wavebirds? Sorry if this has already been posted... just wondering out loud. Maybe it will be since they've indicated that the new controllers will lack some familiar features.

Cost of entry is always an issue and $100 remains a magic number regardless of how inflation alters the actual value. If Nintendo were able to offer a current AAA title (as opposed to one that had already peaked at launch SRP) with the hardware for under $100, this is going to reach a large number of people who look upon it as an exceptional game at a high price. But once that hardware is in their possession the chances of them buying still more games and generating some revenue is immensely higher than trying to sell the same games to someone without the hardware.

The real question is what it actually costs Nintendo to put a GameCube on retail shelves and their willingness to subsidze hardware sales. At this late date it would be ridiculous to keep acting as though the GameCube business will manage a turnaround. The best that can be done is building up interest for the coming generation. someone who has a GameCube is more likely to value continued use of their library in Nintnedo's next console than someone who has managed to go this long without getting a GC. I fully believe that if Nintendo can drop prices for the sake of software sales and future loyalty to that software, they will.
you suck at thinking
And your a total asshole, yea its probably going to drop after E3 and if not then it will drop at the end of the year since the next gen systems will be on the horizons.

i bought one when it was $150 at EB.
then another one when it was $70 at Target.
and finally a 3rd one at it's current $100 at EB.

i am not buying a 4th one, but never say never.

The MK:DD bundle with the extra controller is well worth $100. If you don't want the game, sell it making the GCN around $70.

What do you do with 3 GC?

Personally, I'm being patient and waiting to get the the Revolution on launch date. It's going to be damn hard with Zelda coming out this year, though. :D

Thanks for the feedback guys... I guess by the looks of it, the $99 price is gonna stick. :?

:?: Correct me if I'm wrong... but didn't the PS1 go from $99 to $79? Or am I just nucking futz over here? I guess my thinking that is what had/has my hopes up for a similar GC price drop.

 Oh well... I guess if I'm really desprate to save $20 or so I can get a nice used GC. Nintendo makes pretty darn good products (my N64 and SNES were near invincible it seemed), and EB backs their pre-owned systems rather well.

Heh, that's what I was gonna say. It'd still be a good deal to get a good bundle. I'm sure another one will be out soon.

I don't think it'll drop to $79 until MS or Sony drop their console to $99. Thus, I'd say towards the end of the year cause I think MS will drop the XBox to $99 when XBox 2 hits. That is if you can still find one.
No way they plan on still supporting the GC after the revolution is realesed, so if they do that is when it will be.
They've stated that their next console will be backward compatible, so a lot of developers doing relatively lightweight multiplatform titles will be able to treat the GC and its successor as a single market for their titles. A lot of small companies have made decent money releasing PS1 puzzle games for cheap that picked up a lot of play on PS2s as well.

There is still a period of 2 to 3 years when a $10 game offered to PS2/Xbox/GC owners will make money if it had a low development cost and is any good. Backward compatibility on newer systems will encourage more cheap 'bubble gum by the checkout stand' sort of titles.

I doubt we'll see a GCN price drop until we see a PS2 or Xbox price drop, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another bundle. Maybe one with the Metroid Prime games or Mario Party 6.

If the X-Box 2 does come out by the end of this year as rumored, I wouldn't be surprised to see the price drop. But it won't happen until at least November, I'm guessing - $100 is already damn cheap. I doubt many people who still want Gamecubes are going to be enticed by another $20 drop.
haha by the way... April 29th is going to rock my socks!!! H2G2....
Speaking of which I will have the sweetest sig by tommorow concerning that sock rocking.
