Do You Use Your PS3 as a BLU-RAY player?

Blu-ray is the main reason why I bought a PS3. Wife and kids love watching movies and I'm a bit of a videophile. The PS3 seems to be the most versatile Blu-ray player out there, and I was able to pick one up at a steep discount.

I have about 8 titles so far and 4 more coming in, and I didn't pay a penny over $15 for any of them. The 4 titles coming in cost me about $10 each. And 5 more freebies from that deal which I hope to receive someday.

You won't find any Blu-rays at the $9.99 sale or bargain bin, but if you search around hard enough, there are plenty of deals out there.

I never had a PS2, so being able to play some PS2 games I missed is just icing on the cake.

Now just waiting to pickup a 1080p plasma at the right price... because my 34" 1080i just ain't cutting it anymore.

Wait...The PS3 does other things besides playing Blu-ray movies?

Is that what that weird thing with two joysticks is? To play games with? I just call it my "firmware update remote". Odd.

Yes. I watched 300 and Casino Royale the other day and the picture quality was terrific. I have 8 Blu-Ray movies so far and I'm supposed to receive 5 more through the mail

I own 2 PS3 games and 10 Blu-ray movies.
I just ordered 4 more Blu-rays.
Until the PS3 comes out with more great games that aren't on or are better than the 360 version, I'll continue to mainly use it as a Blu-ray player.

I'm happy with the $600 I spent on the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, as it is one of the best, but wished there were more games out there worth owning.

oh man, blu-ray is fucking awesome!!!! I got one month free from netflix and then one month free from blockbuster. I watched 2 months worth of blu-ray for free. Now they have a two for one deal on blu-rays and all the discs are less than 15 bucks. This is sooooo much fucking cheaper than when I bought a DVD player for 400 bucks back in 1997 and when I got a DVD for ~20 Bucks that was considered a steal. Considering that DVD's cost 20 bucks at release date and then drop to 5-10 bucks 6 months down the road, I see the trend happening for Blu-rays as well. The blu-rays will be MSRP 25 bucks and then drop down 10-15 bucks. If you factor in how much you save per disc over DVD for the quality you get it's pretty much worth it. Hell, I just HELLBOY director's cut for 10 bucks from FRY's and it's the same as the HELLBOY DIRECTOR's Cut on DVD that's 24 bucks on amazon but not HD quality. so worth it as a HD player. Now, gaming on the other hand....

Maybe someday but haven't used my PS3 on a single Blu-Ray movie yet. When the prices come down perhaps. But until then regular DVDs are fine for me. I didn't even bother to mail in for the freebies when I bought the system since there was nothing I wanted on the list. I do use it as my regular DVD player now though.

Blu ray titles still cost to much when compared to dvds.

I own Babel (5dollar deal thanks to cag)
and casino royale.

I use my ps3 more as a regular dvd player then a blu ray player.
Hell im watching seinfeld season 4 on my ps3 right now.

I look forward to the day when the PS3 can play as many video formats as the VLC media player.. Then i will be happy.

I own 15 blu-ray titles. Love them. Didn't pay full price for any of them though. This IS cheapassgamer. Paying 25-30 for a movie (not counting rare special edition dvds that are sometimes released) is absolutely crazy.

lol i want that sunrise blu-ray, the one where they have sunrises from different places on earth. imagine that... forget about my window
Okay, I finally bought a Blu-Ray...got the Planet Earth set for $45. Figure it's worth having around.
Planet Earth is freaking awesome! A must see, especially for the HD video quality. I only have a 720p TV, but I still think BR movies look amazing.

I have 3 other BR titles: Terminator 2 (it was cheap & I didn't have a movie yet), 300, and... cough cough... Dirty Dancing cough...

I've watched maybe 2 upscaled DVD's. I'd rather use the PS3 for games, BR movies and MP4 video.

I've got a 1080p set, which means it's quite glorious to watch a slo-mo sequence of a great white leaping out of the water with a seal dangling out of its mouth:)

Only used it twice. Once to watch Taledega Nights and once to watch The Fifth Element. I defintaly see myself using it much more next year when more awesome movies come out.

I look foward to watching the HD cinematics in games? :p

I've watched Children of Men upscaled, Curse of the Golden Flower, an Fifth Element. But I'm not a big movie collector and not enough places nearby rent blurays that I want.

Netflix = all the Blu-Rays I want.

Just watched
Edward Scissorhands
Tekkon Kinkreet
Curse of the Golden Flower

This Weekend.

So yeah I could buy a stand alone blu-ray player but why should I? The PS3 plays a lot of great games and play's blu-rays great!

Here is a great site for what is cooking in the world of blu-ray:

Yup I have about 11 Blu-ray titles and 2 on the way from Amazon. As with most of my fellow CAGs didn't pay close to retail on them due to various deals that I find here. So for those that have posted deals thanks!
Any of you get your Blu-Rays from Ebay?
lol, nope i got POTC #1 and #2 from the BOGO from AMAZOn though.:)

I use my PS3 only for bluray movies and some PSN games and demos. I own around 26 bluray movies.

Will definitely buy Advent Children when it comes out on Blu Ray. I'm wondering if I should buy Spider-Man 3 on blu ray...I already own the other two on DVD.

Yeah all the time. I don't buy many movies unless they're on sale, thank fully netflix has been really good with my rentals.

Has anything been said about Advent Children on blu ray yet?

spider man 3 sucked if u havent seen it, IMO worst of the 3. im not buying it unless theres a BF deal.

I've only watched Blu-Ray and DVD on my Ps3 other than a few demos and hd trailers. looking to get Resistance at some point though.

My desk was decorated with stuff, a banner, and a light up tiara.
Then I had to take a picture with it on, and now it's everyone's desktop.

:(
Watching movies is probably what I do most with my PS3. about 80% blue ray movies and 20% gaming
same here.

As of Ratchet I'm now 90% Blu-ray, 10% Ratchet.

But I just got Warhawk so who knows! And Uncharted is soon. Finally some games (that aren't available or otherwise superior on 360)!!!!

I have about 30 movies and 4 games on BD (HS, EoJ, Lair, RnC:ToD). Planning on getting Oblivion, Folklore, and others. Haven't played the games yet much, as I'm busy with with PSP Jeanne D'Arc, PS2 GrimGrimoire (Soul Nomad next) and PC games (you gotta see Mechwarrior 4 or Darkstar One - games you can't get on consoles - on my 106" screen with Optoma HD80 - amazing!).

Love the PS3 - much more than just a gaming machine.

is that a projection screen? LOL 106" is insane, i think my 32" is freakin huge already...
is that a projection screen? LOL 106" is insane, i think my 32" is freakin huge already...
Correct. I know 106" is huge and I wanted this size to make my experience more immersive (for games like MW4 or others with 1st person view).

This is off-topic, but it amazes me how much money people can spend on Plasmas and LCDs and still have nowhere near the experience you get with a projector. My setup cost me $3000 (HD80 retails 2700 and you can get the Da-Lite Hi-Power 106" for 300). Even projectors costing 1/2 that amount can be amazing. The only problem with projectors is that in order to use them you must be able to control ambient light. The less ambient light hitting the screen the better the picture. The Hi-Power screen I'm using is pretty good at rejecting it because it essentially reflects light to where it came from. I don't want to get into more detail here, because this is off-topic enough already.

Back on topic, I used my PS3 for watching DVD and BD movies long before purchasing a single PS3 game (simply because there weren't any games on it that interested me - except Oblivion, but the scope of that game scares me away).

I've played games on both platforms and the difference is extremely minor, only fanboys fight over one having a superior version. The only way I'd give the 360 an advantage is because of the way XBL is setup, but if you don't have XBL Gold, then it makes zero difference (also, the 360 is more likely to break the longer you play it).

Yes, so far I've purchased 300, Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and the Planet Earth Set. While they're not the cream of the crop when it comes to content, they all have awesome PQ and I love watching them on Blu Ray. Definitely one of my favorite features of the console.
