does anybody know where i can find pictures of the original 8 bit characters

Yoshi was never in 8 bit, he / they came around in Super Mario World.

a few there, if not all. and ya... yoshi I don't think was ever 8 bit. Though, I have seen it in a hacked NES game.

To be fair, I think Yoshi was in a puzzle game that was released for the NES. Yoshi's Cookie? Something like that. Though I don't think you'd get a decent sprite of him.

Just google for "Nintendo Sprites" or "Mario Sprites". That's what they are called and there's a pretty big internet following around them. Just open the files in paint and zoom in.
