CAGiversary!
I'm really close to buying a Dell DJ, but I just wanted to get everyone elses oppinions before wise. Mind you, this IS CheapAssGamer, so dont even bother mentioning the iPod.

So, does anyone have any suggestions/advice?

not sure about a dj

i have an archos, have had it for over a year now and no problems at all. its a 20 gig recorder, and i paid $200 for it, not sure what they go for now. but everyone whines about the interface, its the exact same interface as an ipod, ipods just have better presentation.

Sorry you're against the idea, but I can't recommend the ipod high enough. Its popular for a reason. Check ipodlounge.com for deals...you can pick one up for a pretty decent price.

Actually, I literally just bought one -- I'm ripping as I write this. I got an iRiver iHP-120: it's a little pricey ('bout the same as an iPod), but it has a swank features list, like an FM tuner, the ability to record from almost anything (it even comes with a mic!), and it's super-easy to use as a portable hard-drive. Cnet, IGN, and a few other sites actually ranked it above the iPod. I'm still working to figure everything out, but it gets at least a tentative thumbs up.

Yeah, iRiver is one of my favorite companies. I have a iFP-390T and that little thing is amazing. I'm not a fan of HD based players but if I had to get one it would be the iRiver.

I'm just against the iPod'sbecause of the price. If someone can find me a great deal for one, I'd definatly consider it. I dont want to spend more than $250

I looked at Creative's Nomad. It seems like a good machine, but poorly made. Cheap though.

I'll investigate the iRiver when I have more time today.

Thanks for all of the help so far.

Get the Dell. I have the 20GB version and it's $150 cheaper than the comparable iPod version. Plus it comes with everything - including a USB cable, which unless you have a firewire port on your PC you'll need to buy separately for the iPod.

The Dell has a longer battery life too. I've read reports that the Dell can go as long as 16 hours. My experience has been 10-12 with the equalizer, that seems to drain some battery life.

And Dell regularly puts out firmware upgrades. If you order from Dell directly, you also get free shipping and no tax is charged unless you live in a small number of states (PA is one, NY is not).

i have an old (4 years this august) nomad 2. i have to say, while it doesnt have a lot of storage space, with a smartmedia ccard, i can get a lot of music. thisng is cheap and it acually is pretty well made. ive dropped it a few times, and besides some scuffs, the things in perfect shape.

I have a Rio Karma (20 gig). So far I've been exceedingly happy with it. Very ergonomic design, FAST and logical menu system, very long battery life. It has great DJ mix settings, and keeps track of all kinds of user/song data. It comes with a dock, which has stereo outputs, and the unit can be connected via USB2.0 or conifgured to a LAN via Ethernet. It can also cross-fade between songs, which I really like.

Downside is that it has no FM tuner or recording capabilities, which don't matter at all to me, but you need to keep that in mind. I paid about $260 for it and it's money well-spent.

It generally gets reviews equal to that of the iRiver, though my roommate has an iRiver and prefers my Karma.

Also, the software for music transferring and organizing is excellent.

I recommend iRiver. A bit pricy, yes, but the quality is definitely there. I'm assuming you won't be upgrading your mp3 player every year. So you might as well put out a bit more cash and get a better one.

I have the ihp-140 (40 gig) and it's a very good mp3 player. The remote rocks. Now I'm waiting for a company do to a wireless remote. That would be the next thing for me.
Amazon.com is offering the Archos 20 GB USB 2.0 MP3 Jukebox Recorder
for $130 Shipped after $50 rebate.
Does anyone know how good the Archos player is? This might be worth picking up if it's a good player...

I bought the Archos for $130 on the amazon deal on it's own it's a decent mp3 player. If you install Rockbox on it instead of the software it comes preinstalled with it becomes MUCH better. Check out http://rockbox.haxx.se/ and peek at all the features that the community has added to the Archos. It even extends the battery life on the player, I get around 13-15 hours of play between charges. The downside is it is a bulkier mp3 player than most, it's not going to easily slip into your front pocket, I primarily use my mp3 player when I'm sitting around bored or in my car, so that doesn't bother me, but if you want to run or jog comfortably with it you'd want something smaller.

Wow, looks like other people are interested. This is my little chart to keep things organized. I'm gonna get a 20GB one, so thats where Im getting prices from. It seems like every day I find a new one that looks good.

i may have to get one. my 128 mb of music storage isnt holding up after getting 4 gigs of remixes. i wish i culd afford an ipod

I have a dell dj, my dad got it with a computer he ordered for his company. With the last firm ware upgrade it has gotten big points from me. It's pretty easy to transfer files/make play lists with the new firmware. People I show it to think it's pretty cool, plus I don't look like a tool showing off his ipod.
