I have my eye on a Western Digital My Book 160GB External hard drive from best buy. Its $99 which seems like a good deal but I was wondering if anyone knows if there good or not. Fast? Get very hot? other such specs.

i have never had a western digital hard drive attached to my system since there hard drive failure fieasco of 2000... I lost 3 hard drives that year, all western digital and all brand new :(
 
Generally, Seagate drives and Western Digital ones are pretty reliable. However, no drive is guaranteed to be 100% reliable. Maxtor drives offer the best GB/$ ratio, though the quality is lacking.

Another thing to note is that WD has its premium lines of Raptor (10000RPM) and Caviar hard drives. Those tend to be more reliable. External drives are usually decent.
 
WD is a realy reliable company now. I have had no issues with there hard drives. Speed of course depends on the specs of the specific HD itself.
 
From my personal experiences and from two of my friends I'll never buy another WD hard drive again.

Two hard drives, one crashed on me while I was still using it, and another one started to act funny, prompting me to buy a Seagate as fast as I could. My friends have had similiar experiences with them.
 
WD and Seagate are basically the top two in the HDD sector. But nothing is guarenteed when it comes to technology.
 
I haven't had bad luck with any of the Maxtor or WD drives I've owned so far, and most of the responses you're going to get will either be WESTERN DIGITAL SUCKS because they had a drive fail on them, or WESTERN DIGITAL IS PRETTY GOOD because they haven't had one fail.

Not a terrible price on the drive, either. Might be cheaper per gigabyte to buy a normal internal 300GB HD and an enclosure off of Newegg if you just want shitloads of space.
 
I actually own the very same , WD 160 GB external , you're talking about .
I like it , I use for my out of control iTunes mp3's.
It's formatted fat 32 when you get it , so if you want it formatted NTFS do it before you put stuff on it .
I had to re-copy almost 10 gb's worth of stuff before I found this out .
I would most likely get another , when mine's full , and I need an additional portable .
