Does the Wiimote battery drain any time the blue light is on?

Such as, if you're not currently playing but have the console on, is the Wiimote's battery automatically draining as much as it was if I were playing? If so, is there any sort of battery-save feature I'm missing so we can have a game on pause for a while without the battery draining?

I haven't found any answers to this in my instruction guide hunting, but perhaps y'all know.

Disable the rumble to make your batteries last worlds longer. Hit the 'Home' button on the remote, and click controller settings.
