I got this reply for listing my graphic card on craiglist:

Hello i really appreciate your response to my earlier mail.i will like
to buy this item so pls do withdraw the advert from Craigslist. I will
also like you to know that i will be paying via check.I will need you
to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing
of the check.
1.Your full name to be on the check
2.Home or work address
3.Your phone number.
**I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for moving
i will have my mover come over for the pick up as soon as you have
cashed the check**
Have a nice day.

N.B UPS does not deliver to a p.o.box address

Not a typical response.....

Yes this is an obvious scam. Ignore it. Anything involving checks, paypal, and pretty much anything that isn't face to face is a scam on craigslist.

1. Bad grammar is a sign of a scam. It's usually people from another country trying to scam ignorant Americans so they can easily get away with it.
2. Seriously...a check?!?
3. Normal local buyers will not use the word advert.

I don't know what's worse...the fact that without help you may have believed this or the fact that people continue to fool americans with oh so obvious scams.

Wow

Sounds very similar to the asshat that I got to send me a check made out to one "Leroy Jenkins"

He threatened to sick the "local CIA" on me and that he had a brother that worked for the FBI, even though he couldn't give me the brother's name and contact info. :D

A good rule of thumb I have is if it sounds fishy enough that it makes you get other peoples opinions on it then it is probably a scam.

I agree this is probably a scam but not everybody who wants to use paypal is a scammer. This is why I hate trying to buy stuff from CL cus people think im a scammer if I ask if theyll mail it and ill pay with paypal. Dumb a**es never email me back.

I love when people do that... because then I tell them, "Go ahead, and I'll gladly let local newspapers and media outlets know that your family is using tax player dollars to pursue private matters."

Yeah. Another one threatened to call the police on me for trying to take his money.(when i called him on the scam and said no)

I gave him the address of the local police station(saying it was mine) and said "Bring it!"

He's the one that said "I more smart than you"

Here's an easy way to figure out whether it's legit or not:

If they talk about the item you're selling EXACTLY as you typed it, it's a scam. Also if it's very vague and could be about anything, it's a scam.

For example, you're selling a graphics card, a stock scam response would be.

Hello, I saw your ad on Craigslist and am very much interested, I've been looking for that for a very long time and I"m glad I found it etc etc etc

This is the kind of response you want:

Hey, saw you're selling a gfx card on Craigslist? My comp's is getting old etc etc (if they ask specific questions that could only be about what you're seling it's probably legit).

Why are people dumbasses if they don't email you back when you want to pay for something on CL with a method other than CASH?

Craigslist is supposed to be a marketplace for people to deal FACE TO FACE in a quick transaction with one LOCAL person paying cash money and the other person getting an item they want for a decent price.

After an initial noob period on CL(where I almost sent off a large item to a scammer:shock:) I've learned to just say NO when someone wants to deal in a way other than face to face and with cash.

Hell. Even CL themselves say to not trust people wanting you to ship stuff.
How about if it aint in cash it aint a deal to be had.
That's what I've started putting in my posts. "Cash and local only please, Nigerians need not apply"

I always do locals only in cash only and only in public places during the day, usually the Target parking lot near my house or the mall parking lot.

You're braver than me then, as I have them meet me INSIDE the mall.

I don't see the problem with paypal, if they pay first.
They can try to reclaim their money, but thats why you pay USPS the extra 30 cents for delivery confirmation.
So honestly, there's no problem with it.

lol not all sellers on craigslist who want to use paypal are scammers.

I once found a seller who had several games I really want so bad but i didn't want to drive from LA to SD to pick them up. He asked me if I would do paypal? At first, I didn't want too, but we have been exchanging emails for the last two weeks or so and he seems like a trusted seller. I took the risk and ended up with a sealed copy of MGS3 Subsistence and Snake Eater, a complete copy of Fatal Frame 1, 2, 3, and Zone of Enders 2nd Runner for $50 shipped. Not only that, a week later he sent me the ZOE:2nd runner strategy guide at no charge.

And both of you braver then I. I meet at the police station because if they were going to try anything their not going to bother showing up anymore. I also know the entire police force though so I'm not just some weird guy with stuff in their lobby.

Anyway a 110% sure fire way its a scam ( thats right 110%) is anytime they want to send their agent.. Bill Gates doesn't use craigslist and anyone important enough to have "an agent" isn't going to be buying used items on craigslist.

It is if you're responding from Nigeria.

The reply is, word for word, a well-known 419/check-scam template. You can get a general idea of how they work here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_fraud#Craigslist

Unfortunately, they are insanely common on Craigslist nowadays, which is why you should also read over the following if you plan on using it to sell:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

As someone else has already hinted at, a dead giveaway here would be the incredibly idiotic notion of needing a "mover" or go-between to pick up a video card. Seriously.

Most people will tell you to just ignore it, but if you're bored enough, you can amuse yourself into oblivion by screwing with the respondent for weeks on end. Google "scam baiting" as a start.

Other than surveillance footage after the fact, a parking lot is going to do f*** all for you if someone is intent on jacking you. Do yourself a favour and take the extra 20 seconds to actually move inside a public place. Park near the entrance, take someone else with you whenever possible, wait a while to leave after the transaction is complete, and only do so when other people are walking out as well. You can add an extra deterrent layer if you have a smartphone by leaving it in your pocket with the speaker on and a Police Scanner app running. The noise and chatter is usually enough to make people think twice about doing something stupid.

Not saying I wouldn't accept it in some cases, but, realistically speaking, whenever PayPal is involved, there is always a potential for fraud. Period. Just because you don't see problems with PayPal, or have yet to experience them, doesn't mean they don't exist. A quick glance at PayPal's user agreement & SEC filings, not to mention the multitudes of stories on the usual array of "PayPal sucks" sites, can easily tell you that. There's a reason the combination of "PayPal" and "Fraud" currently returns over 20 million search results.

I suppose the parking lots I use are a fair bit busier than the ones you're going to. Really busy shopping centers. May as well be inside, but, to each their own.
