Does this piss anybody else off? (DVD's)

I hate it when a DVD is released and then 6 months later or when a sequel to the first comes out, a newer better version DVD with more features comes out. It doesn't bother me with Kill Bill, because I haven't purchased the original DVD, and I really really want the extra features, but I have "Meet the Parents" on DVD and now I just saw a commercial for a New Special Edition version with 36 more outtakes now that "Meet the Fockers" is coming out. Does this make anyone else mad? :x

The exact same thing happens with CD;'s.

I mean, how many variations of "Yes-Greatest Hits" do you need?

You know that in another five years the DVD market will start to crash just like CD's. People will have had their fill. We're already seeing this with releases, rereleases, special editions, platinum editions, etc.

The next one will be upgrading 5.1 audio to 7.!

yeah i stopped buying dvds, waste of money. All i get now is box sets for tvs shows i used to like since im tired of tv as well

I get the versions w/ DTS sound, and forget about the extras. I mean, when I pop in the movie I want to see the movie - not 10 extra minutes that wasn't worth including in the first place.

I used to get bent out of shape about trying to have the "best" version of something, but I just let that go. The only exceptions are when the go all-out like with the LOTR extended sets.

It doesn't bother me because I normally don't care about the extras they put in the sepecial edition, I rarely watch bonus material. I do however like special editions because they lead to a price drop in the original version.

Yaeh it does suck. At least with some dvds they give us a heads up/warning like with Kill Bill. I waiting for when it is released as a box set with both "special editions" of the movie plus the extra dvd. Also like how they told us with LOTR. At least with those dvds, the regular version to the EE/SE of it both have something worth it to actually buy both.

How many different styles of Kill Bill are they planning to put out? I know they have the two that are already out plus a box set of just those two and then special editions of them and then and box set of the special edition with the extra bonus dvd.

Yeah, we're waiting to buy a lot of movies, because we fear they will come out in better editions. Tommy Boy is supposed to come out with a special edition, along with Office Space and Donnie Darko.

I buy tons of DVDs. I don't go to the theaters often, and I never rent. I often buy DVDs just so I can see the movie for the first time.

The jargon for it is "double dipping". I don't mind when they redo things that need to be redone (like Happy Gilmore which was only fullscreen but I is widescreen now i think). I get pissed though, when companies knowlingly do it to screw us and take our cash. Take "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" for example. About a week or two after it came out they announced a two disk set to be out later. Bastards.

Yeah it bugs me, I wish I wasn't such a sucker for the super duper, tricked out, ultimate limited edition, anniversary collector's series dvd's. Something in my mind just says I have to "collect them all". I want the version with the most extras and the sweetest cover, even though I know it's ridiculous and I will probably never watch the extra stuff, and I know they produced millions upon millions of copies so it isn't really limited. I don't collect for investment or anything, it's just a mindset, I am a completist.

The worst is when they don't let you know they will be releasing another version. Sony is notorious for this, ie. the Spiderman Deluxe edition, that includes the same original spiderman disc in case, just wrapped up with a bonus disc. LOTR is a good example where you knew a better version was coming and could wait if you wanted.

Video games are starting to catch on to this, even though PC games have done this for a while. Halo 2 is one big example.

6669, I know that Donnie Darko is supposed to be receiving soon a Director's Cut edition or something like that. I found out about it one day after I bought the original DD. I'm really pissed at that. At least it only cost me $7.

I don't buy many movies, so it's not really a problem for me. I bought both Kill Bills, and I plan on buying their big box set SE's when they are released. Honestly, besides those two movies, I have no idea what the last movie I bought was!

It only gets me mad when I buy the dvd and 3 weeks later the special edition comes out, i.e. when I bought hellboy.....errrrr......

To everyone buying the "Final" LOTR Trilogy..

What will you do when they finish the Hobbit, and release that on DVD, then make a quad DVD set.. (It will be like $499.99 :))

pwn3d!

Yes, it does suck that they re-release the same DVD with bonus features. That's why I wait until they come out with a 2-Disc Special Edition. I only buy DVDs when they're on sale or if they have those 2 FOR $20 deals.

Usual Suspects was the first this happened to me. It really did tick me off, but there's not much I can do about it, except to shell out more money, which I have yet to do. Although knowing my wife, Mary Poppins will be the first time I have to 'double dip'. So yes it does tick me off, and I wish they wouldn't do it, but they got to make their money any way they can.

YOU SHUT UP! The Hobbit is years away and I don't want to think about it yet.

I actually have a pretty good solution but it requires patience. I don't buy a DVD until I can get it for $10, new or used. I make the occasional exception, recently Elf and LOTR:ROTK. This ends up saving me, on average, $6 a DVD. Plus, I can usually trade in some used ones and only pay a couple of bucks. I am a CADVDer.

I purchased the Rambo trilogy a few moths back with extras for fourty bucks. Now, they have the same trilogy out again, with a alternate suicide ending and added extras for ten bucks cheaper.

I hate when they do that!

WOW AdmiralAckbar...................

Another YES fan,... and in DE too!!!

What a coincidence!!!

I hesitated to buy any of their compilations, except for Classic Yes,.... but that was like 5-6 years ago.
I just bought all of the individual albums separately.
I've seen them in concert 5 times already,.... but my concert going days are pretty much over now,... as I won't bring my son to such a smoke pit.

:)

As for the DVD thing,..... it's ridiculous!!
I have sold most of my originals for rereleases,.... except of course, for my OOP titles.

My Dawn of the Dead was going for $100+ a while ago.
So,... I just held onto it.
Now I have 3 DotDs, and 2 Day o fthe Deads.

I'm REALLY pissed at the POOR transfer of Hero.
I sold my old copy,... thinking that the Tarentino release would bring perfection to the table.

What a HORRID DVD!!!!
I don't want to hear some A-Hole's opinion about a movie HE deemed fit for America.

I mean I'm glad it's getting exposure,... but it should have been a Divimax, SUPERBIT, or an AnimEigo transfer.
Then it would have been perfect.

Not to mention the lack of DTS!!
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????

The new version of meet the parents doesn't bother me as much as some. Afterall, wasn't the dvd of Meet the parents released several years ago?

Thats why I don't buy DVD's anymore.
hehe, i was gonna write the same exact thing! :p
I also stoped. They are like games now, they drop in price really fast. You can find dvds one sale for 10 bucks that like 6 months ago cost 20.

Plus I know the new dvd format will be here & mainstream in about 5 years. So I don't want to have to re-buy my movie collection when the new dvd format comes out.

Are they really making The Hobbit? I thought this was a pipe dream because of all the licensing involved. Plus, if Magneto doesn't play Gandolf it will lessen the experience, IMO...

I guess it doesn't bother me THAT much. I mean I usually can sell the regular edition and buy the special edition to recoop costs. The only time I'll upgrade though is if they offer a MUCH better picture or sound. I really could care less about the extras (except for the CLERKS X DVD)

Also, a lot of times they announce that their will be a Special Edition coming out (in the future) Hellboy did this, I knew the SE was coming out.

It does suck, but what are you going to do.....take it and like it.

I thought the NEW HERO release was decent....I thought it did have DTS, I'm almost positive about that.

Yep, it does: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=13424

What bootleg did you buy?

Sometimes it's good to have the "original" DVD . I'm glad I have the Criterion version of 'This Is Spinal Tap' . Just thought I'd try to be positive . Other than that , I own 3 Terminator 2's , 2 Tron's , 2 Die Hard 1&2 , 2 Nightmare Before X-mas , 2 Goodfella's , and a couple more I can't think of right now . So , yes I'm sick of this but , I fall for this an awful lot .

yeah it's been a while. I think this one's got a slipcase too (annoying things, they are). one cool thing about these SE releases are the free movie tickets. "Meet the Parents" SE has a "Meet the Fockers" Ticket inside. a $10.50 value. So if you're planning to see MTF and haven't bought the MTP DVD yet...pick it up. It's like buying a $20 dvd for $9.50. Of course, if you're lucky, there are distribution errors that have 2 or more tickets inside  and of course the flipside to that is someone out there gets none heh.

I try to wait on buying a single copy of a movie series, just on the thought that there might be a newer edition/special edition on the horizon.

I did this with the Matrix movies, as I only own the Matrix and the Animatrix (with soundtrack), and I'm eyeing the box set and thinking about selling the two single copies for next to nothing, to recover a few bucks back.

I bought Kill Bill 1 and 2 during the BF weekend, since CC had #1 for $11.99 and PM'd Target down to $12.17. Wanted copies of each, and that was the cheap way to do it. For the Special Edition box sets, I'll buy it when I have a better setup that I do now for DVD's.

I did buy LOTR:FoTR, TTT and RoTK in both versions for one simple reason. To let my friends borrow the theatrical release, and then loan them the extended release and show them how much better it would have been with the extended release being let out into the theatres.

Two Words: Cowboy Bebop. fucking bandai decides that the sales from Best Sessions was so good, they are going to rerelease the series in full 5.1 English. I already spent 200+ on the series.

Now a single movie, well, since I scam CH, I have no problem with them doing that.

I'm just the kinda guy that's gotta have the better version, I guess.

All of them! ;)

I get pissed off with special versions of DVDs, and Kill Bill is probably the thing that pisses me off the most, just because of the number of releases they're planning. I think a while ago when a Miramax suit was giving his "multiple bites of the apple" speech, he mentioned all the versions to be released - Standard 1 and 2, 1 and 2 box, 1 and 2 special editions, 1 and 2 box, and the Tarrantino box "in time for the holidays.” Then there's the potential for director's cuts of each movie, which would pretty much be the Asian release of the films.

But to my second point, I don't really mind director’s cuts. I like to own both versions of the films because they both usually have they're own merits. Donnie Darko will probably be worth owning both - the new one gives you more information, but the old one remains more mysterious. Then there's Army of Darkness. Each cut has its own memorable lines and changes. I guess that's why there's the Boomstick Edition.
It only gets me mad when I buy the dvd and 3 weeks later the special edition comes out, i.e. when I bought hellboy.....errrrr......
Yeah, that pissed me off, and I don't even LIKE Hellboy! How can you do something so boneheaded as release a special edition less than a month after you release the fucking original?!?!?

To me it really depends on what movie that's being re-released that is in question. Of course "Hellboy" pissed the hell out of me, sadly I already opened the 2 disc so I wasn't going to return it. Now that the talk of a 2 disc SE for "I-Robot" is being whispered, thank god I didn't open that so back its going.

I don't mind rebuying a movie if there is a justified reason. The LOTR trilogy is a perfect example - both the theatrical and extended are two different versions of the film, and each release is a different set of extras as well with nothing duplicated between the two so I'm fine with buying both.

Another example is the recent 40th Anniversary Edition of "Dr. Strangelove." For the first time in home video history are we getting it in its theatrical Widescreen format instead of the Kubrick's 4:3 Home Video format (as Strangelove's is a mix between 4:3 and 1.66:1 Widescreen depending on how Kubrick shot the scene). I snapped up the 40th Anniversary namely for this version even though I got the Special Edition that came out several years ago (which is a 4:3 FS presentation).

I am going to have to say however that the best re-release of any film is in fact the recent Special Edition for "Top Gun." Now only is the film remastered and finally for the first time in its original 2.35:1 Widescreen format (and enhanced for Widescreen TVs to boot), the DVD now comes with a new Dolby 5.1 and DTS 6.1 mix, audio commentary, four music videos, and quite a few documentries. The best part is that Paramount released the new "Top Gun" at the exact price the previous movie only edition is currently selling for (about $15). While Paramount has been doing this with all their re-releases as of lately, doing this with "Top Gun" deserves a big round of applause.
